HTC One V coming to US on Virgin Mobile

HTC One V coming to US on Virgin Mobile

While HTC's One V smartphone was already confirmed to make its way to U.S. carriers, exactly which one remained a bit of a mystery until today.

Virgin Mobile finally stole that spotlight, announcing that it will offer the HTC One V without a contract for $199 along with monthly plans starting at $35 per month.

The smartphone sports a 1GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, 3.7-inch screen with an 800 x 480 resolution, and Beats Audio.

It also features a 5-megapixel back-illuminated camera using HTC's ImageSense chip, capable of capturing still images while taking 720p HD video.

It also runs Android's Ice Cream Sandwich OS with HTC's Sense 4 UI overlay.

Bang for your buck

The HTC One V may not live up to its more powerful sibling the One X, but the affordable price makes for an even tradeoff.

In TechRadar's review of the One V, we called it a "a smartphone that will help push user expectations of competitively priced handsets to new, ever advancing levels."

Back in May, HTC said it would bring One V stateside "through a variety of U.S. partners," and Virgin Mobile's press release says nothing of exclusivity, so more carrier options could be on the way later this summer.

For now though, expect to see the HTC One V show up on Virgin Mobile's website and Best Buy, Radioshack, and Walmart retailers nationwide through July and August.

T-Mobile USA CEO quits

T-Mobile USA CEO quits

T-Mobile USA is on the lookout for a new CEO following the resignation of Philipp Humm.

The carrier, currently the fourth most popular in the United States, has struggled badly since its planned merger with AT&T was blocked by regulators last year.

On top of that, it remains the only major US network not to sell the Apple iPhone.

Humm has been attempting to steady the ship amid revenues, without help from T-Mobile's parent company, the German mobile conglomerate Deutsche Telekom.

Converting initiatives to success

Humm, who stepped down on Wednesday, now says he plans to "pursue a career outside of Deutsche Telekom" and return back to Germany to spend more time with his family.

As T-Mobile USA looks to find his successor, current COO Jim Alling will temporarily steer the ship.

Deutsche Telekom says it is looking for "somebody who can convert initiatives into market-successes," as it seeks to remain competitive.

Apple gets Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales banned in the US

Apple gets Samsung Galaxy Nexus sales banned in the US

The never-ending court battle between Apple and Samsung has seen Cupertino succeed in getting the Galaxy Nexus handset banned from sale in the United States.

Apple had sought a temporary injunction against the device back in February, alleging that the Galaxy Nexus infringed on the iPhone's intellectual property. That claim has now been upheld by a California court.

The case alleges that the Samsung device infringes on Apple patent no. 8,086,604, which covers the device's ability to search multiple areas through a single search interface.

Once Apple posts a bond of $96m, according to court reporter Dan Levine, the ban will come into effect.

Happy birthday, dear iPhone

The decision is a somewhat inauspicious way for the iPhone to celebrate its fifth birthday, having launched on June 29 2007.

Judge Lucy Koh said in her ruling: "Although Samsung will necessarily be harmed by being forced to withdraw its product from the market before the merits can be determined after a full trial, the harm faced by Apple absent an injunction is greater.

"Apple's interest in enforcing its patent rights is particularly strong because it has presented a strong case on the merits."

The sales ban on the Galaxy Nexus strikes directly at the heart at Google's Android operating system, given that this was the company's flagship Ice Cream Sandwich device.

The Galaxy Nexus currently boasts the purest iteration of Android on any top handset currently available, given that it is not skinned with a manufacturer's UI, such as Samsung's TouchWiz or HTC's Sense.

Taking all available measures

Samsung spokesman Adam Yates said: "Samsung is disappointed, as the court's decision will restrict U.S. consumer choice in the smartphone market.

"We will take all available measures, including legal action, to ensure the Galaxy Nexus remains available to consumers."

Business week reports that Samsung will attempt to convince the court to delay the order on Saturday.

So much for those heavily-hyped peace talks...

In a heartbeat, I would get it.

I've already lost one iPhone to a fall. Square didn't offer accidental protection for the first month or so, and since I got mine day 1 I couldn't get coverage. Which sucks.

But, I was happy to find out Apple only charged me 200 or so for a replacement on the 4gb model.

The iphone is remarkably durable, considering how elegant it feels in your hand. But as others have commented, it really depends where an iphone is dropped that determines whether or not you end up with a $600 brick.

In my case, the *one* time I took my iPhone out of the Incase case I bought for it (which as bkeene correctly described, is a piece of crap, but definitely protects it against droppage), it accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on its back glass side up. A few minutes later, I noticed my WiFi signal get gradually weaker, and in about 5 minutes, the phone was completely bricked--no wifi signal, no EDGE and the phone actually popped up an error message saying, in essence, that my phone is in fact, bricked and could no longer make calls. This from a modest fall of around 12 inches above a ceramic tiled floor.

Thankfully there was no visible damage to the unit, so I took it into my local Genius Bar, played dumb (often referring to my self-hacked WRT54 wireless router as "my wireless thingy"), and recieved a new replacement unit a few days later.

It absolutely freaks me out to think what would happen if the glass broke or something. After the first year of ownership, Applecare is worth buying for laptops and ipods, but it really sucks that they don't protect you against accidental damage, considering how much they charge you for Applecare. So I'm on the "iPhone insurance is worth it" side of the fence.

USAA, my renter's insurance provider, covers accidental loss or damage to personal property, and specifically computer gear. YMMV with your provider.

Samsung tweets about Galaxy Note 2, promptly deletes message

Samsung tweets about Galaxy Note 2, promptly deletes message

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has previously been the topic only of rumors and speculation, but a recent tweet from the Samsung Arabia Twitter account has let the cat out of the bag early.

The unannounced Samsung Galaxy Note 2 was included in a message that asked Samsung Arabia's followers to respond with what upcoming devices they're most excited about.

The tweet from @SamsungMobileME read: "Which one of these are you excited about: #GalaxyBeam #GalaxyTab2 #GalaxyNote2 #Poll."

The Samsung Galaxy Beam and Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 are well-known devices, and it makes perfect sense for Samsung to follow up on the successful Galaxy Note with a Galaxy Note 2.

Unless this particular company tweeter was pulling products out of thin air, it's likely Samsung will announce the Galaxy Note 2 release date, or at least confirm its existence, soon.

TechRadar has reached out to Samsung for more information, but the company has yet to respond.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 rumors

Recently, rumors claimed that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 will have a flexible screen, allowing the device to bend slightly under pressure, and a quad-core processor.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2's screen is also rumored to be larger than that of its predecessor, which had a 5.3-inch display.

A screen as large as 5.5 inches would place the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 even more firmly in the realm of smartphone/tablet hybrid.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 release date is pegged for October, according to multiple reports, and it'll likely run Android 5.0 Jelly Bean, the successor to Ice Cream Sandwich.

Finally, the Galaxy Note 2's camera is rumored to be a 12MP improvement on its predecessor's 8MP shutter.

This story will update when TechRadar hears back from Samsung.

I, too, have a Speck case and a screen overlay for my iPhone.

The Speck ToughCase is ugly -- UGLY!! -- but makes your device invincible. I've dropped it multiple times on concrete, have gotten it dirty, damp, and used it in extremely rugged conditions. Thanks to the case, the device remains as pristine as the day I got it.

The Speck cleans easily; just remove the phone and scrub the case under some water. When it dries, it's like new. It has yet to stretch, even after multiple cleanings. The screen overlay is also nice. If you are careful when applying it the first time, the display will look natural, if slightly matted. (Think photographs.) Another benefit of an overlay is that doesn't get smudgy or oily like the naked screen, and can be wiped clean with any towel or shirt available.

The case I really want is coming soon from OtterBox.

Incidentally, this is my second iPhone. I had no case for the first, and dropped it the week I got it. (I turn into Kramer when I make calls, apparently.) The back metal casing scratched on impact in multiple places. Thankfully, it had dead pixels anyway, and Apple replaced it.

In Depth: 21 essential everyday apps for your phone and PC/Mac

Essential everyday apps for your PC

According to recent research, the average person spends seven years of their life on the internet.

While it's a slightly shocking statistic, it's not hugely surprising - we're connected at almost every moment of out lives, be it via desktop PC at work, a smartphone on the train or a tablet while we're lounging on the sofa.

We might as well embrace the phenomenon, and use our spangly technological tools to make the most of our lives.

There are millions of apps that promise to make our day-to-day existence better, but sifting through them to find useful ones is a herculean task in itself.

We've taken our average day at work and home and analysed each and every moment we spend online, be it in front of a computer or fiddling on a smartphone.

From here we've rounded up the most useful apps we've found ourselves using on a daily basis, from toothbrush timers to gaming services to traffic apps - and everything else in between.

First up, you'll find a list of our favourite desktop apps and programs. Computers tend to be used for longer periods, focused on specific tasks, rather than the on-the-go situations in which you'd find yourself using a smartphone. Therefore, the programs listed are the ones we find ourselves using most often throughout the day.

For smartphone apps, we've included ones that are more location specific - such as a cooking app you can use in the kitchen, or an exercise app you can fire up when you head out for a run.

Mac and PC

Apps aren't just for when you're on the move - whether it's improving your photos or organising a stag do, your PC can download everything you need

1. Picasa

Picasa

PC and Mac

Your aunt's just emailed and she wants a nice photo of you for the family album. The thought of sifting through numerous folders of images of varying quality puts you in a cold sweat.

You need Picasa. Google's photo organisation software automatically seeks out faces in albums and tags them with scary accuracy - it can even correctly identify faces in 30-year old photos.

Add to this a host of features such as photo-fixing and automatic uploading and Picasa is an all-round winner. It's a program we use every single day, and it certainly keeps our aunties happy.

2. Trillian

Trillian

PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Blackberry

Trillian's all-in-one approach puts all your Skype, MSN, Google Talk and Facebook contacts in one place. It will also check Facebook and your email for new messages, making it the only communications program you'll ever need.

3. Dropbox

PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Blackberry

You've got an important file on your home computer, but now you're at work you've got no way of accessing it. We don't know how we ever coped without Dropbox.

It's an easy-to-use utility that's essential for sharing files that are too big to email - a zip full of photos, or a whole album of music.

But Dropbox's functionality doesn't end there - by installing a small piece of software, you can create a folder and fill it with files and folders you want to share. These will then sync online, so you can access them from anywhere with an internet connection.

There are Android and iPhone apps too, so everything is still available when you're on the move, and we often find ourselves sorting out our lives with Dropbox.

4. Doodle.com

Doodle.com

PC, Mac, Mobile

Not sure when the best date is for that upcoming team away day? Doodle.com's incredibly useful service saves you wading through email after email to see who's free and when.

Simply create an event, add dates and times and then copy the link to that particular Doodle into your invite email.

Participants can add their names to the table, then fill in their free times and dates. An ongoing tally lets you know who's planning on attending, and which days and times have the most votes.

It's such a simple service, but one that we find ourselves using all the time - even if it is just to see who's available for the office tea run.

5. Portable Apps

PC

You've just got your new work PC delivered, but it's missing your favourite programs - Chrome, Skype and Office are all conspicuous by their absence.

Portable Apps is an incredibly handy download that puts lots of useful free software onto a single USB stick. It includes all sorts of programs, from 3D modelling in Blender to outrunning a falling city in the game Canabalt.

So when your new PC turns up, just plug in the USB drive and you'll have full access to all your programs. It will also sort all your documents onto the drive via its interface, and it's a one-stop-shop for everything you'll ever need on the move.

6. Google Docs

PC, Mac

Google's own fully-featured Microsoft Office alternatives have long been a mainstay of our office, but where they come into their own is with their collaborative features. Create a document, share it with co-workers and watch as they make changes and communicate via a chat box.

Sharing files is easy, with the ability to create emails with attachments from within each application in Google Docs. The icing on the cake is an offline mode, which means you can view and edit documents even when you don't have an internet connection.

7. BBC iPlayer

iPlayer

PC, Mac, Android, iOS, games consoles

The BBC iPlayer service has come on leaps and bounds since it launched in 2007. Newer features such as HD streaming and series record make it all the more pleasurable, and it's certainly worth downloading the desktop app so you can save programs onto your PC and watch them later. You can even view the occasional film for free in the 'Films' category.

Catch-up programmes are free-for-all in the UK, but if you watch programmes live you'll have to pay your licence fee to use the service, even if you don't own a TV. But it's worth every penny.

8. Instapaper

PC, Mac, iOS, Android

Ever find yourself stumbling across an interesting article, only to get distracted and not have time to read it? Sign up for an Instapaper account and you'll be able to save articles and entire websites for perusal at a later time.

The website consists of a bookmark that's dragged into your bookmarks bar, then clicked to save relevant pages. Everything you save is available from Instapaper.com, presented in an easy-to-read layout, and iPhone and Android apps make them available everywhere.

9. Chrome Apps

PC, Mac

Chrome isn't just for browsing websites - it has a fully featured app store packed with useful downloadable add-ons. Among these are Next Bus London and Tube Service updates for London transport, numerous weather checkers - including a rain alarm - and useful Gmail and Hotmail notifiers.

Google's really keen on promoting Chrome as the only program you'll ever need to download, so you'll also find playable full games such as Bastion, plus productivity apps like Listhings and the always-useful Task Timer. Best of all, the majority of these applications are completely free to use.

"Google is keen to promote Chrome as the only program you'll ever need, so it's packed with games and apps"

10. Sticky notes

Sticky Notes

PC, Mac (Stickies)

Who would have thought that a humble square of paper with a pressure-sensitive non-permanent adhesive backing would revolutionise the way we work? The Post-It note may have reached its 32nd birthday, but it's still as incredibly useful, and thanks to digital alternatives your desk needn't become buried under the ubiquitous yellow squares.

Windows 7 has its own free - and oft-overlooked - version in the form of Sticky Notes, which can be dragged and dropped to the most important parts of your desktop. Clicking the plus symbol to the upper right creates new sticky notes, and right-clicking lets you choose which colour they are. Keep an empty one open ready for when you get an important phone call and can't find a pen?

Essential everyday apps for your smartphone

11. Smartphone apps

From waking up and brushing your teeth to heading out for exercise or planning the evening's viewing, these are the apps that make your smartphone truly essential.

12. RAC Traffic

iOS, Android, WP7

You're all set for a hard day's work, but before you go you want to make sure that there are no major traffic problems on your route to the office. Enter RAC Traffic, a free application that works in conjunction with RAC's nationwide traffic updates to highlight any problems or slow spots on the roads.

Incidents are highlighted in yellow, orange or red based on their severity and how much they'll affect your journey. Tapping each one gives more details such as whether it's a severe traffic accident or mere road works. Essential if you're a regular commuter.

13. Big Oven

BigOven

iOS, Android, WP7

Time for dinner. But - oh no - you forgot to pop out for groceries. Fortunately Big Oven is on hand, and you're able to concoct a hearty square meal with a bunch of leftovers and a packet of frozen peas.

With a database of over 170,000 recipes you're spoiled for choice, and a handy ingredients list means you can pick up everything you need. It's a tad America-centric, but even the laziest of home chefs will find inspiration and ideas here.

14. Toothbrush Timer

Toothbrush tmer

Toothbrush Timer (iOS)
Toothbrush Helper (Android)
Toothbrush Timer (WP7)

Brushing your teeth should be part of your daily routine, but surprisingly few people know how to do it properly. Brush for too short an amount of time and you might not get them clean; brush for too long and you'll risk gum damage. Dentists recommend brushing for two minutes, but short of installing a stop watch in your bathroom, how do you measure this?

Fortunately, you can get your gnashers into a sparkling set of toothbrush timer apps, which show you which part of your mouth to brush when. Your dentist will thank you for it when you next go for a check-up.

15. Red Laser

iOS, Android, WP7

Popping to the shops at lunch is always a bit dangerous, especially if you pass many lovely stores that are full of tempting goodies. But the real problem with impulse buying is: how do you know if you're getting the best price, especially compared to online deals?

Enter the Red Laser app. Hold your smartphone's camera up to a product's barcode and Red Laser will scan it and hunt out the best online prices via sites like eBay and Amazon. It works with just about anything with a barcode, and its results are impressively relevant. You can even use it when you're in the supermarket, although it may take a while to go through a full trolley of shopping.

16. Sky+

iOS, Android

Time to kick off your shoes and catch up on some television. If you want to plan out your evening on the way home, this app from Sky+ includes listings for the next seven days on all terrestrial, satellite or cable channels, presented in an easy-to-use guide sorted by channel genres.

You don't have to be a Sky customer to use it, either - just download it, then select 'Use Sky+ without signing in'. If you're a Sky customer, though, you can set programmes to record at home remotely via Sky+. It's definitely one of the better TV guide apps, outperforming numerous paid-for ones.

17. Endomondo

Endomondo

iOS, Android, WP7

Proud that a hard day's work is complete, it's time to reward yourself with a little exercise. Endomondo keeps track of your activities and calories burned, and it supports everything from aerobics to yoga.

Outdoor activities like running or kayaking are reported via GPS, with reviewable maps and stats presented at the end. There's even a motivational voice to keep you going when you're running low on energy, and its social network-integration features are second-to-none.

18. Evernote

Evernote

iOS, Android, WP7

A productive day's work requires planning and structure. Evernote is an immensely useful piece of software that works like a digital notepad, capturing not just words but images and sounds too.

Point it at an important document or even a hand-scrawled piece of paper, and Evernote cleverly lets you search for words or phrases within it. It automatically syncs with the Evernote website as well, so you can view that important to-do list at your computer and on your phone. It's just as handy for the home as it is for the office, and you'll soon find yourself making lists wherever you go.

19. Sleep Alarms

Sleep Cycle Alarm (iOS)
Sleep as Android (Android)
SleepMaster (WP7)

You know you're going to have a good day when you've had a decent rest the night before. Lay your phone on the bed and a sleep tracking app will monitor your nightly movements and sounds using the phone's motion sensor and microphone. From here it works out the best time to wake you, based on a half-an-hour window you've already set.

20. Google Docs

iOS, Android, WP7

You're in an important meeting, but you've just remembered that you need to make a quick alteration to an all-important spreadsheet. You pull out your smartphone, open Google Docs and do it there and then. And while there are many Office-style apps on all smartphone platforms, Google Docs' polished interface and ease-of-use make it our number one - we've even created entire articles using it.

The caveat is that you have to be online for it to save and sync, but any existing documents can be opened and then edited offline later. It's completely free, although you will need a Google account.

21. Calorific

iOS, Android

If you're keen to lose weight it's a good idea to start counting the number of calories in your lunch. Yes, this sounds like a chore, but Calorific aims to make it as quick and easy as takeaway pizza. Ingredients are broken down into three categories: Great, OK and Bad, and you simply estimate the portion sizes of each one.

While the results may not be as accurate as other calorie counters, Calorific keeps you motivated to eat healthily with an overview of what you've eaten during the day, and a week-long history so you can see where you can improve. It's a simple solution to a complicated problem.

Updated: Report: RIM may break up company into handset and messaging divisions

Updated: Report: RIM may break up company into handset and messaging divisions

Reports on Sunday claim that Research in Motion is seriously considering breaking up the company into two divisions; handsets and messaging.

UPDATE: RIM has confirmed in a statement to TechRadar that it is looking into the possibility of licensing out its technology through advisors, which it claims is an already-outlined strategy:

"RIM has hired advisers to help the Company examine ways to leverage the BlackBerry platform through partnerships, licensing opportunities and strategic business model alternatives.

"As Thorsten [Heins, CEO] said on the Company's fourth-quarter earnings call, 'We believe the best way to drive value for our stakeholders is to execute on our plan to turn the company around.' This remains true."

The Sunday Times writes (pay-walled) that the struggling smartphone giant may make its handset division a separately listed company, or indeed sell it off completely.

The report puts Facebook and Amazon forward as potential suitors should the BlackBerry brand become available, for what could be a knock-down price.

Quoting unnamed sources, The Sunday Times also believes there would be options to sell the BBM messaging and email software to Apple or Google.

Another alternative

Another alternative would be, according to the Times, to keep the company together and sell it as a whole, to a giant like Microsoft, although we'd imagine Redwood may go after Nokia if that eventuality unfolded.

While, if true, this report would send shockwaves through the mobile industry, it effectively just says 'everything is on the table,'

Question: Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops?

I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

The Basics of Dow Theory

Deciphering the market's move ahead of time has been an investor's pursuit for years. At times it is amazing to learn some of the theories, concepts, indicators, etc developed by investors or individuals years ago sans any technology that we have today. Dow theory is one such creation that has been around for almost 100 years, yet its basic components still remain valid today. Charles H. Dow, journalist, founder, first editor of the Wall Street Journal and co-founder of the Dow Jones and Company, developed the theory that not only takes technical analysis and price action into consideration, but also the market philosophy. Following Dow's death in 1902, Wiliam P. Hamilton, Robert Rhea and E. George Schaefer organized, refined and collectively represented Dow theory, based on 252 Dow's editorials.

Mutant Storm App Review ? The Challenging Vector Arcade Title Ported to the iPad

Crescent Moon Games, publishers of many iOS titles, have ventured from one App Store genre to another. Not because their past games have tremendously failed, but because they're simply creative to the core - universally. Their latest entrance into the App Store, Mutant Storm ($2.99), falls into the arcade genre with fast-paced, shooting action - and naturally, it's quite brilliant.

Week in Tech: The empire strikes back: is Surface a winning tablet?

Week in Tech: The empire strikes back: is Surface a winning tablet?

Hold the front page: Microsoft is sexy! Bear with us on that one, and try not to think about Steve Ballmer. Think instead of Microsoft Surface, the company's new and rather exciting entry into the tablet market.

More iPad than TouchPad, Surface is genuinely desirable and genuinely innovative: its clever Touch Cover and Type Cover, if they work like Microsoft promises, take tablet covers and turn them into keyboards and trackpads. There are two devices, one ARM-powered and running Windows RT, and one Intel-powered and running Windows 8 Pro. Both devices have integrated Wi-Fi but don't appear to come in 3G/4G versions.

Even Microsoft's hardware partners were surprised, which is probably just as well as Microsoft is now competing directly with them. As John McCann points out, it's a very significant move: "The Surface tablet marks a significant step in Microsoft's development, as it's the first time in its 37 year history that the firm has produced computing hardware itself, instead of using original equipment manufacturers (OEMs)." Microsoft says it won't neglect OEMs, but then, it would say that, wouldn't it?

Surface is generating serious buzz for Microsoft, but our resident grump Gary Marshall reckons we should hang on a bit: the presentation was shockingly light on details: "It's on sale in mumblemumble and the price starts at ahemahemahem," he writes, pointing out that Microsoft's claims are very vague. "The Windows RT Surface will be 'priced competitively with a comparable ARM tablet'. Which one? A no-name Chinese Android cheapie, or the top-end iPad with 4G? The Windows Pro one will be priced competitively with direct rivals. Which ones? Windows 8 ones? Android ones? Apple ones?"

Marshall's big concern is that Surface, for now at least, is vapourware. "It's yet another bit of jam tomorrow, one more example of the 'no, we don't have a tablet just yet but when we do it's going to be the bestest tablet ever and it'll totally kill Apple and stuff!' mentality that's plagued the tech industry since the iPad," he says. "Until Surface ships, "it's a promise, not a product."

Microsoft powers up Windows Phone

Surface wasn't Microsoft's only big news this week: it also unveiled Windows Phone 8, which is due out in the autumn. There's good news and bad news: the good news is that it's packed with ace new features, and the bad news is that existing Windows Phone handsets won't run it. Instead they'll be able to get Windows Phone 7.8, which will look like Windows Phone 8 but won't contain the shared core that makes it easier for developers to write apps.

As Mary Branscombe explains, Windows Phone 8 is a really big deal. "Windows Phone 8 is a major new version, running the kernel from Windows rather than from Windows CE," she says. "Microsoft is adding the features that Windows Phone needs to succeed and that need new hardware... now it just needs to sell more devices."

More bad news for Nokia

Selling more devices is something Nokia wants to do too. You'd think that as it's bleeding money and laying off staff, it'd be horrified at the timing of Microsoft's announcement: for Nokia, this is the worst possible time for Microsoft to say to the world, "hey! There's a newer, better OS coming and those Lumias won't run it!" Apparently not: Nokia says that everything's just brilliant.

We're not convinced. As Chris Smith writes: "for a company positioning itself as a rival to Apple and Android, to suggest most customers don't care about software upgrades sounds a little naive." But perhaps there's a bigger game being played here: we're increasingly convinced that Microsoft is going to buy the struggling phone maker. Surface says that if OEMs aren't doing enough, Microsoft will do it instead; if that's the case with tablets, it could soon be the case with Windows Phone as well.
