iPhone 5 and iPad Mini launch date set for September 12?

iPhone 5 and iPad Mini launch date set for September 12?

Apparently we will see Apple unveil the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini at a special event on Wednesday September 12, with stock arriving in stores nine days later.

According to iMore sources "who have proven accurate in the past", Apple is planning an early September launch for the sixth generation of iPhone and down-sized iPad tablet.

If Apple were to reveal the iPhone 5 on September 12 it would be almost a year since the iPhone 4S took to the stage, which fits nicely into the Cupetinio-based firm's annual product cycle.

Clockwork Apple

We've heard various rumours mooting a launch at some point in September, and the suggestion that the iPhone 5 will go on sale on September 21 falls inline with another, albeit unknown, source giving this latest report a little more weight.

However the source which has provided this information is unknown and although there are claims it's provided correct information in the past, it's impossible to verify this ? so you should take the news with the recommended dosage of salt.

As for the iPad Mini, it's still unclear if Apple is even producing a smaller tablet, but with the advent of the Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7 we can see why it may be considering a budget option.

I, too, have a Speck case and a screen overlay for my iPhone.

The Speck ToughCase is ugly -- UGLY!! -- but makes your device invincible. I've dropped it multiple times on concrete, have gotten it dirty, damp, and used it in extremely rugged conditions. Thanks to the case, the device remains as pristine as the day I got it.

The Speck cleans easily; just remove the phone and scrub the case under some water. When it dries, it's like new. It has yet to stretch, even after multiple cleanings. The screen overlay is also nice. If you are careful when applying it the first time, the display will look natural, if slightly matted. (Think photographs.) Another benefit of an overlay is that doesn't get smudgy or oily like the naked screen, and can be wiped clean with any towel or shirt available.

The case I really want is coming soon from OtterBox.

Incidentally, this is my second iPhone. I had no case for the first, and dropped it the week I got it. (I turn into Kramer when I make calls, apparently.) The back metal casing scratched on impact in multiple places. Thankfully, it had dead pixels anyway, and Apple replaced it.

I was constantly dropping phones, so I got a rubber case for my Blackberry from Speck. They make a similar product for the iPhone. I can vouch for its resilience.

HOWEVER, there are two serious caveats:

- Bulk and aesthetics. You've got a big, knobby piece of rubber on your lovely iPhone.

- It's rubber, so it can be sometimes frustrating to dig out of your pocket without turning the whole thing inside-out. And forget putting it into any slim-fitting clothes.

In the end, I ditched the case and forced myself to be more diligent. I now have no case and can't remember the last time I dropped it (*knock on wood*).

My boyfriend has had his iphone since the first day they came out, and I've personally watched him drop it, carry it in his pocket everywhere, knocking it AND the dock off his bedside table across the room, and it looks immaculate. He doesn't have a cover or anything on it. I specifically commented to him the other day that I couldn't believe there wasn't a scratch or anything on the glass. The wonders of technology! Unless you plan on throwing it against concrete or something, a cover seems kinda of unnecessary. Plus it'll only detract from the iphone's coolness. :)

Last year's Sony Xperia handsets to miss out on Jelly Bean

Last year's Sony Xperia handsets to miss out on Jelly Bean

Sony UK has confirmed that it won't be equipping some 2011 handsets with the new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update.

Among the devices to miss out are the Sony Xperia Arc S and the Xperia Mini Pro.

The news comes from Sony Mobile's UK product manager John Cooper, who made the announcements while answering queries from users on the Sony UK Facebook Page.

He said: "Unfortunately Xperia Arc S will not be getting the Jelly Bean updated (sic) but we're always developing new phones to make sure they have the latest updates."

Later in the thread he added: "Unfortunately the Xperia Mini Pro will not be getting Jelly Bean :( Are you interested in any of the current Xperia range?"

Xperia S now good to go

In some slightly better news for Sony handset fans, Cooper announced that Ice Cream Sandwich is now ready to go for the Xperia S, but there's no news on Jelly Bean at present.

He said: "ICS should now be approved for all Xperia S handsets. We currently don't have anything to announce regarding Jelly Bean for the Xperia S."

Interview: How Adobe is powering the BBC's Olympics coverage

Interview: How Adobe is powering the BBC's Olympics coverage

How Adobe is powering the BBC's Olympics coverage

Adobe has revealed its Primetime tech is providing the legwork behind the BBC's massive Olympics streaming effort for both live and on-demand streams.

The Beeb previously announced it would provide 24 extra channels that will be available on Sky and Virgin Media, but Adobe is providing the ability to make these available via streams whether on PC, Mac, smart TV or a mobile device. Its tech is also enabling will also be thousands of hours of on-demand highlights and catch-up TV via BBC iPlayer.

The Primetime system is a single platform that uses Adobe Media Server to push content out to devices of any type, whether it's a laptop, an iOS browser or iPlayer on a connected TV. Although elements of Primetime have been available before, this is the first time Adobe has brought them all together to deliver such a major event.

However you want it

We spoke to Steve Allison, a senior manager for Adobe's Media and Advertising Solutions division, about the partnership. "Primetime is a way of delivering high volume and high quality video content out to any kind of device at the other end. This Olympics is going to change the way people change people consume sport content in particular. What the BBC is doing is showing every single event from start to finish, to catch up to rewind. You can go online and see it in action which is really rather cool."

"The system is also going to enable us to create the highlights as video on demand files very quickly. So the BBC is taking in the camera feeds from the IOC, running it through our technology and puboxshing it out over their Intelligent Video Player."

"You can jump between different events and live streams, but also be able to time jump ? if your event has already started you can rewind to the start. So very much going away from the traditional approach where the editor decided what you watch, it's moving towards a self-directed, non-linear approach."

BBC Olympics

Allison was also happy to talk about ad-funded content ? Primetime presents commercials and programming in a single stream rather than having separate streams coming in and out ? but says the BBC has a unique challenge in terms of devices.

"The challenge the BBC has is that anybody who pays the license fee should be able to watch [the content]. And there's a great variety of devices out there, phones tablets and internet-enabled televisions. We've enabled a number of integrations through the BBC's systems into the iPlayer coverage but also we're leveraging the great capabilities [of] live feeds and to be able to convert for iOS devices, which is obviously the only one without Flash on. We can reach all those different devices [with] Primetime."

Dealing with different bitrates

We also asked Allison to explain a little about the huge number of streams that have to be prepared because of different bitrates and devices. "There are 24 live channels they're pushing out, there's also [those for] iPlayer. Each of which has multiple bitrates so you can do adaptive streaming so you can move between high and low quality depending on what your network is doing. So in some cases there are up to seven different bitrates. That's a tremendous amount of content being pushed out of the BBC system."

Primetime works differently from the BBC's usual iPlayer provision, says Allison. "iPlayer is a true stream which has low latency but obviously the more users you have the more you need to push out that signal. HTTP then becomes very exciting because you don't need that one to one connection and you can service a lot more people because it's just HTTP traffic and it can be cached.

"That's essentially what the Adobe Media Server does. It converts the 24 streams into different bitrates and pushes them out. The normal problem with HTTP is latency, you don't want people to wait, it's coming up to a goal and something starts buffering. A lot of thought went into how we can make the user experience as smooth as possible.

"[Users] don't want to think about or care about the technology behind the scenes ? the user experience should be pretty cool wherever you are. All things being equal, 15 seconds should be the maximum latency that you can expect."

"One of the great things is that people can rewind and rewatch, so there's going to be as many people going back and watching content. Latency is obviously important and we work to reduce it, but it won't interfere [with people's experience]."

Taking the strain

But what of the strain on network infrastructure? "We gave serious consideration to whether we'd bring the UK internet to its knees with this level of output. We expect a massive amount of mobile consumption of this stuff. People are going to be checking up on their phones and maybe when they're watching TV they'll also have their tablet with them.

"The idea of HTTP is to be able do all that caching so that we've got a very resilient, network-aware architecture in there so we can deliver that highest quality as far as possible. And if you can't get the highest quality there should still be a [stream] that you can receive. So obviously the BBC handles their relationship with the ISPs, everyone is geared up to expect a lot of traffic and we've made provision so we can get as much [content] out there."

Adobe previously announced it has also worked with US Olympics broadcast partner NBC on two free Adobe AIR-powered apps for the US; NBC Olympics Live Extra and NBC Olympics. Both are available for iOS and Android and promise more than 3,500 hours of Olympic streamed content.

Primetime is currently on a limited trial with selected partners, but Adobe hopes that full rollout will happen during the second half of 2012.

RIM borrows a page from Instagram for Blackberry 10

RIM borrows a page from Instagram for Blackberry 10

The much-anticipated release of Blackberry 10 will allegedly incorporate new camera features that look suspiciously like what Android and iOS users can do in a little ol' app called Instagram.

According to a report posted over at Crackberry, RIM is allegedly building new, "filters, frames, transformations, and photo enhancement features" right into the operating system.

A number of the improvements (including new photo editing features) come courtesy of technology that RIM licensed from Scalado, a company that Nokia announced it was acquiring just this past June.

As part of the deal, however, Scalado mentioned that planning to "fulfill any and all obligations in relation to its existing customers," which includes RIM.

And the release is...

If you're looking to get your hands on some of the new camera tweaks to preview, you'll be waiting for a little while.

According to The Verge's Louis Goddard, the filters and frames can currently only be found on the Dev Alpha builds of Blackberry 10 ? which require fancy development hardware (e.g. smartphones you don't own) to access.

Since Instagram is likely none to keen to release its own native app for the Blackberry platform, the new camera features in Blackberry 10 ? hitting smartphones in the first quarter of 2013 ? are the closest users are going to get to the spot-blur, radically colored images taken by their Android- and iOS-using peers.

Video, too

Crackberry also reports that Blackberry's video editing tools are getting a bit of a makeover in Blackberry 10.

However, the site hasn't expanded on what it's been able to uncover on that front.

There's no doubt, though, that the new tweaks will likely be designed to appeal to the touch-screen focus RIM's putting on its Blackberry smartphones going forward.

In other words, perhaps we'll see a bit of iOS-like video "pinching" built into the editing capabilities of Blackberry 10?

In Depth: Project Glass: what you need to know

In Depth: Project Glass: what you need to know

When Google unveiled Project Glass, the tech world instantly fell into two camps. Camp one was excited: we're living in the sci-fi future! Camp two, though, wasn't so happy. It's vapourware! some said, while others worried that Google just wanted to plaster ads on the entire world. Is either camp correct? Let's find out.

What is Google's Project Glass?

Google's Project Glass is Google's attempt to make wearable computing mainstream, and it's effectively a smart pair of glasses with an integrated heads-up display and a battery hidden inside the frame.

Wearable computing is not a new idea, but Google's enormous bank account and can-do attitude means that Project Glass could well be the first product to do significant numbers.

When will Google Glass be released?

It looks as though Project Glass will see a public release in 2014 at the earliest. Latest news is that developers will be able to get hold of 'explorer edition' units at some point in 2013 with a "broad consumer offering" arriving a year later.

What's the difference between Google Glasses and Google Goggles?

Google Goggles is software, an app that can search the web based on photos and scans. Google Glass is hardware.

How does Project Glass work?

According to well-informed Google blogger Seth Weintraub, Google's Project Glass glasses will probably use a transparent LCD or AMOLED display to put information in front of your eyeballs. It's location-aware thanks to a camera and GPS, and you can scroll and click on information by tilting your head, something that is apparently quite easy to master. Google Glasses will also use voice input and output.

What are the Google Glass specifications?

The New York Times says that the glasses will run Android, will include a small screen in front of your eye and will have motion sensors, GPS and either 3G or 4G data connections. Weintraub says that the device is designed to be a stand-alone device rather than an Android phone peripheral: while Project Glass can connect to a smartphone via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth 4.0, "it communicates directly with the cloud". There is also a front-facing camera and a flash, although it's not a multi-megapixel monster, and the most recent prototype's screen isn't transparent.

project glass

What will I be able to do with Google Glasses?

According to Google's own video, you'll be a super-being with the ability to have tiny people talking to you in the corner of your eye, to find your way around using sat-nav, to know when the subway's closed, to take and share photographs and to learn the ukelele in a day.

GLASS ACT: Google's video is fun, but it's not this-year fun: expect more modest systems at first

OK, what will I really be able to do with Google Glass? Is Google Glass a vision of the future?

Nobody knows. The idea is to deliver augmented reality, with information that's directly relevant to your surroundings appearing in front of you whenever you need it. For example, your glasses might tell you where the nearest decent restaurant is, book your table, invite your friends and show you how to get there, or they might provide work-related information when you're at your desk.

What information we'll use it for, if we use it at all, remains to be seen: like Apple's Siri, it's a technology with enormous potential. It could even end up in contact lenses: one of the Project Glass team, Babak Parviz of the University of Washington, recently built a contact lens with embedded electronics.

I already wear glasses. Will Google Glasses work for me?

Yes. Google is experimenting with designs that will fit over existing glasses so you don't have to wear two lots of specs.

google glass

Is Google Glass vapourware?

The New York Times says no: Google's got some of its very best people working on the project, and experts such as wearable computing specialist Michael Liebhold say that "In addition to having a superstar team of scientists who specialize in wearable, they also have the needed data elements, including Google Maps."

Not everyone is convinced. Wired spoke to Blair MacIntyre, director of the Augmented Environments Lab at Georgia Tech, who said "you could not do [augmented reality] with a display like this." MIT Media Lab researcher Pranav Mistry agreed, saying that "the small screen seen in the photos cannot give the experience the video is showing."

There are several engineering issues - making a screen that works in darkness and in bright sunlight is tough - and mobile display technology doesn't offer dynamic focusing, which reads your eye to deliver perfectly clear visuals. Current wearable displays have to be two feet away from your face.

There's clearly a big gap between Google's demo video and the actual product: Google says its photos "show what this technology could look like" and its video demonstrates "what it might enable you to do" [emphasis added by us].

What is the Project Glass price?

The NYT again: according to "several Google employees familiar with the project who asked not to be named," the glasses are expected "to cost around the price of current smartphones." So that's around 500, then, possibly with the help of a hefty Google subsidy.

Is Project Glass evil?

It could be. Google's business is about making money from advertising, and some people worry that Google Glass is its attempt to monetise your eyeballs by blasting you with ads whenever you look at something.

If you think pop-ups are annoying in a web browser, imagine them in front of your face. The ADmented Reality spoof is one of very many parodies that made us laugh.

Some of the parodies actually make a good point by showing people bumping into stuff: heads-up displays can be distracting, and there may be safety issues too. Until Google ships its self-driving car, the thought of drivers being distracted by their glasses is fairly terrifying.

There are privacy implications too. Never mind your web history: Google Glass might record everything you see and do.

Google Glass pre-order customers will get regular updates

Those people who paid Google $1,500 for the privilege of pre-ordering some Project Glass specs will be receiving "private updates" through Google+.

Will Google Glasses make me look like a dork?

Er... yes.

Google puts price on Motorola patents

Google puts price on Motorola patents

Google has revealed how much it spent on patents and "developed technology" in its buyout of Motorola Mobility, and it's not as much as you may think.

The search giant has revealed that $5.5billion (around 3.5 billion) of its $12.4 billion (around 8 billion) takeover of the mobile manufacturer went towards acquiring Motorola's vast catalogue of over 17,000 patents.

This means Google spent 44 percent of its cash on the patents, an acquisition which was seen by many as the main reason for the takeover, so it's a little surprising that less than half the money was spent on these.

Bargain of the century?

At several billion pounds they have by no means come cheap, but they do allow Google to strengthen its arsenal as Apple continues to take action around the world against firms it claims has infringed on its patents.

With this in mind, Google may well have got itself the bargain of the century, as in the long run it could see the search giant being able to protect itself and its Android platform against the continuous onslaught from its Cupertino-based rival.

Alongside these figures Google said: "The acquisition is expected to protect and advance our Android ecosystem and enhance competition in mobile computing."

HTC Facebook Phone could arrive in 2013

HTC Facebook Phone could arrive in 2013

An official Facebook Phone may be with us sometime next year, courtesy of Taiwanese manufacturer HTC.

HTC has already launched a couple of handset which sport dedicated Facebook buttons, the HTC ChaCha and HTC Salsa, providing users with a quick way to jump into the social network's app on their phone - although these handsets proved to be something of a flop with consumers, despite relative critical acclaim.

According to Bloomberg West, HTC is about to take the next step and develop and full-on Facebook Phone ? set to arrive in the middle of 2013.

Facebook'd your mum on my phone

Currently there are no further details on the proposed handset, but we'd expect it to come running Android (probably Jelly Bean), with HTC's Sense overlay which may be heavily tweaked to include lots of Facebook-orientated features and integration.

We're not completely sold on the idea of a Facebook Phone, as the free application available on all the major mobile operating systems provides enough for most people's activities on the move, and we're seeing it integrated into the likes of our camera, contacts and media apps to allow for easy sharing 24/7.

Perhaps HTC is hoping that with the backing of Facebook the handset will achieve a large number of sales, as it looks to get back on track after slipping away from the likes of Samsung and Apple in the past six months or so.

O2 rolls out free Wi-Fi for London 2012

O2 rolls out free Wi-Fi for London 2012

O2 is setting up seven large free Wi-Fi hotspots across the capital during London 2012.

Oxford Street, Leicester Square and Exhibition Road all benefit from the scheme which has been set up with Westminster City Council and the Royal Borough of Kensington.

The Wi-Fi is free to all ? there's no requirement to be an O2 customer. This is good news for overseas visitors who can potentially avoid being slapped with a huge 3G roaming bill when they get home.

Users just need to register once, after which they should be automatically hooked up to the service when in range.

Boris-backed

London Mayor Boris Johnson commented:"With millions of extra people coming to town for the Games, we want to ensure we showcase the capital as the best city in the world to work and visit. The addition of free Wifi to some of our most popular landmarks is crucial in helping to maintain that reputation."

It's not clear how long the free Wi-Fi service will run, but we imagine that after the Paralympics ends O2's generosity will dry up.

While O2 is working above ground, Virgin Media has put free (until the autumn) Wi-Fi into 41 London tube stations and counting.

T3 Awards Phone of the Year - the candidates

T3 Awards Phone of the Year - the candidates

T3 Awards 2012 - Phone of the Year nominees

TechRadar is sponsoring the Phone of the Year category in this year's glittering T3 Awards, so we thought we'd take an in-depth look at each of the nominees to help you cast your vote.

The shortlist is certainly fascinating, with three different operating systems going head to head and six different handsets from five different manufacturers.

With the iPhone 5 yet to be officially announced, the iPhone 4S heads up Apple's charge and it will be challenged by the flagship Android phone from Samsung ? the Galaxy S3.

HTC's One X has won plaudits this year and is also listed, along with Sony's first post-Ericsson headliner the Xperia S.

Samsung's Galaxy Nexus has managed a place and Nokia will be buoyed to have picked up a placement for the Windows Phone 7-toting Nokia Lumia 900.

You can vote for your favourites at http://www.t3.com/awards.

Apple iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S - a major seller

Apple's iPhone 4S has become such a familiar sight in the fast-moving and ever-changing world of mobile phones that it's easy to forget that it only made an appearance in October 2011.

Some have never forgiven the iPhone 4S for not being the iPhone 5, with the lack of a new design and a performance bump rather than complete overhaul bringing rare criticism for an Apple product.

But despite Siri being considerably less impressive than people hoped and the screen being smaller than those being offered by the likes of Samsung, this quickly became Apple's best selling phone to date.

FutTv : 3hKGBOfU3Sm2o

The Retina display that arrived with its predecessor - the iPhone 4 - remains an impressive selling point, and the massive back catalogue of apps and games run smoothly and impressively on the iPhone 4S' dual-core processor.

TechRadar's iPhone 4S review awarded the handset four-and-a-half stars, with phones and tablets editor Gareth Beavis commenting: "Some people might be disappointed not to have seen the fabled iPhone 5, with the larger screen and new design, but the iPhone 4S is more than enough to keep Apple fans happy.

"Simply put: if you've got an iPhone 4, you don't need to upgrade but for anyone else on an older device, or hankering after finally making the jump to an iPhone, you should run down to the shops and pick one up now - you won't regret it."

You can check out the iPhone 4S review, read on or go and vote for the iPhone 4S in the T3 Awards 2012.

Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung Galaxy S3

Samsung's Galaxy S3 represents the pinnacle of current phone hardware from a manufacturer that is producing perhaps the most exciting tech on the planet right now.

It's got every kind of feature we could ask for and more, and raises the bar once again in terms of what consumers should be expecting in terms of battery life, processor speed and media management.

In our Samsung Galaxy S3 review the handset blew us away with its array of features, receiving four-and-a-half stars and it now sits proudly atop our 20 Best Mobile Phones in the World.

FutTv : 7LZ1JV2TAJ3sY

Packing a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, huge 4.8-inch HD display, 8MP camera and up to 64GB of internal storage, the Galaxy S3 is a mouth-watering prospect for anyone who loves phones.

John McCann, TechRadar's Mobile Devices writer said: "If you want the best (Android) phone on the market then look no further, as the Samsung Galaxy S3 has it all, as long as you've got the cash to afford it."

You can check out the Samsung Galaxy S3 review, read on or go and vote for the Galaxy S3 in the T3 Awards 2012.

Nokia Lumia 900

Nokia Lumia 900

Betting the farm on Windows Phone is certainly a massively brave move from Nokia, but some would argue that the Finnish giant needed to do something to arrest its slide away from smartphone relevance - and the Lumia 900 represents its best effort yet.

With a large screen that brings the excellent Live Tiles system to the fore, coupled with a burgeoning apps market and stand-out polycarbonate shell, our TechRadar's Nokia Lumia 900 review shows this is definitely the best handset on the Windows Phone platform.

It's also got a decent Carl Zeiss lens and dual LED flash to improve picture taking, to continue Nokia's heritage in the camera phone space.

FutTv : 3US7js87EaCI3

Beavis says: "While the Lumia 900 is a well-built and good-looking phone, it doesn't have the raw grunt of others on show. A single core processor is kinder on the battery, but doesn't allow really cutting edge applications to be made.

"With Windows Phone 8 on the horizon consumers may be a little worried about picking up a phone that's not set to be upgraded, but it will be getting a boost with an overhauled home screen in the near future."

Check out our Nokia Lumia 900 review or go and vote for the Lumia 900 in the T3 Awards 2012.

HTC One X

HTC One X

The HTC One X is one of the most stunning phones on the market right now, and a worthy competitor in the phone of the year category.

With the One X, HTC has taken things back to what it knows best: making beautiful hardware fused with a top end skin, which comes in the form of Sense 4.0.

The polycarbonate shell is smooth and premium-feeling in the hand, and the large 4.7-inch HD screen might not be OLED but it's certainly crisp and clear - and then there's the quad core processor beating at the heart of the One X.

FutTv : thsmrLR4WV5CF

Racking up an impressive four-and-a-half stars out of five in our in-depth HTC One X review, the handset could well be the one to get the Taiwanese firm's fortunes back on track.

McCann noted: "Although playing second fiddle to the Samsung Galaxy S3, some will prefer the stylings of the equally capable One X, which while unable to match the S3 in features, its sleeker design is certainly something to behold."

You can check out the HTC One X review, read on or go and vote for the One X in the T3 Awards 2012.

Sony Xperia S

Sony Xperia S

Since splitting from Ericsson, Sony has finally produced some amazing handsets, with the Xperia S a firm favourite in the current crop from the Japanese tech giant.

There are plenty of positives to pull from the Xperia S, with the new HD screen featuring Sony's Bravia TV technology, 12MP camera and dual-core processor all combining to make one of the finest smartphones of 2012.

FutTv : nTvwTUjqv9D2e

Also claiming a four-and-a-half star rating in our Sony Xperia S review, the handset comes in a little cheaper than its more powerful rivals, making it a top option in the band below the quad-core pack.

McCann said: "The Xperia S can't match the Galaxy S3 or One X in terms of features or specs, but for those on slightly tighter budgets it provides an excellent smartphone experience."

Check out our Sony Xperia S review or go and vote for the Xperia S in the T3 Awards 2012.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

The Nexus range has always been fascinating to gadget fans, representing Google's vision of what an Android device should look like and how it should behave - but does the Nexus measure up to its Samsung brother - the Galaxy S3?

One of the biggest reasons to pick up the Galaxy Nexus is the fact it's going to get all the Android updates sooner than the competition, with Android Jelly Bean beaming down to the device soon.

FutTv : eOd39Ttiohmr7

Add in NFC capabilities, a large screen with pin-sharp resolution and a super-fast camera mode and you can see why this could be considered one of the phones of the year.

Beavis says: "While it's a gorgeous phone it may struggle in this category against the might of the Galaxy S3 and One X. As we noted in our Samsung Galaxy Nexus review it's going to be one of the most up to date phones, but in terms of raw power and functionality it doesn't have the clout of the competition."

Check out our Samsung Galaxy Nexus review or go and vote for the Galaxy Nexus in the T3 Awards 2012.

Best known for its hotel reviews, TripAdvisor is also a great way to find restaurants and things to do when you're out and about in London for the Olympics. Find eateries and attractions close to you using your phone's GPS, and see how they've been rated by other travellers. And if you are stuck for accommodation, it can of course point you towards over a thousand London hotels ? though whether any will have last-minute rooms available during the Games is another matter?
