Nokia Lumia 920 Pureview and Lumia 820 leaked on Twitter

Nokia Lumia 920 Pureview and Lumia 820 leaked on Twitter

Nokia's big Windows Phone 8 announcements next week just got a bit less surprising as photos of the Nokia Lumia 820 and Nokia Lumia 920 hit Twitter.

Posted by @evleaks, fast becoming the bane of tech manufacturers' lives, the two handsets come with high quality photos but not many other details.

The Nokia Lumia 920 looks like the higher-end of the two, apparently coming with PureView (which means a serious snapper) and a 4.5-inch screen.

This could be the handset previously known as the Nokia Lumia Phi despite the screen-size discrepancy (Nokia commentator Eldar Murtazin said the Phi would have a 4.7-inch display).

Looks like there'll be at least three colours available: grey, yellow and red (silly marketing-inspired names TBC).

Double rainbow

The Nokia Lumia 820 is slightly smaller, with a 4.3-inch screen and no PureView mention.

The 820 is shown in a few more colours which we'll spell out for you here in case you can't see colour: purple, cyan, grey, black, white, yellow and red.

Nokia Lumia 820Image credit: @evleaks

Both handsets are likely to be running Windows Phone 8 given the big Windows Phone 8 and Nokia announcements that are scheduled for next week ? as for more detailed interior specs, we'll have to wait for the official word (or the next leak).

Of course, there's no guarantee that these images are for real so we recommend the usual dose of salt - but they look pretty darn legit to us.

IFA 2012: Smaller Samsung Galaxy Notes on their way?

IFA 2012: Smaller Samsung Galaxy Notes on their way?

The Samsung Galaxy Note line-up will continue to grow and may contain cheaper models, TechRadar was told.

Speaking to James White of Samsung Mobile UK, when asked about whether there was any scope to push the Note range down into cheaper realms was told that it was very possible:

"The Galaxy Note 2 with a 5.5-inch screen is our smarpthone offering in the Note category, the ultimate balance between portability and uncompromised media selection.

"But [the Note] is an important category for us, and you'll see us investing in and growing that area."

Note-worthy

The notion of a budget Note is an intriguing one, as most of Samsung's messaging is around the power, creativity and productivity on offer with the Note 2 and Note 10.1 ? which it would struggle to maintain if it offered a lower-spec model.

But with the company seeing Note as a strong category to go alongside its S-series of smartphones, the notion of a cheaper option that still uses the stylus would be attractive to consumers looking to get their hands on something different from the faceless black slabs on offer at the moment.

IFA 2012: HTC confirms retirement of Wildfire range

IFA 2012: HTC confirms retirement of Wildfire range

With the launch of the Desire X, HTC confirmed it will now only be using two brand names.

The HTC Wildfire and Wildfire S have been incredibly popular for the Taiwanese brand at the budget end of the scale, but since the release of the low-spec HTC Desire C there's seemed to be very little room left for the incendiary range.

And at the launch of the Desire X, Graham Wheeler, director of commercialisation product management at HTC, confirmed that there would be no more Wildfire handsets for the time being.

It could have been the Jovi

While he didn't rule out bringing the range back at some point in the future, the brand's decision to release fewer handsets and simplify its line of handsets means there's no room at the inn for the old Wildfire handsets.

The Wildfire name itself was interesting, coming as the winner of a poll to decide the name of a new HTC phone on Facebook - it could have been the HTC Festi, Zeal or (shudder) Jovi.

It's going to be interesting to see how the HTC Desire X fares against the likes of the HTC One V and One S ? Wheeler dubbed the One series as 'superphones' while the Desire range are 'just smartphones'.

However, given the fact the Desire range still packs a strong design ethos and Beats Audio, as well as a more powerful processor in the case of the Desire X, there could be confusion for consumers with two HTC handsets competing for the same space.

IFA 2012: Huawei's Emotion UI for Android gets its day at IFA

IFA 2012: Huawei's Emotion UI for Android gets its day at IFA

Concern for making a consumer friendly experience has bled from Huawei's devices into its user interfaces.

The company announced the impending launch of a revamped UI for Android Thursday at IFA 2012 and offered a taste of what's to come.

The Emotion UI, as it's dubbed, aims to please, building on the company's "Design with Empathy" philosophy, according to a media release.

"Emotion UI is a reflection of Huawei's empathic design philosophy - built by consumers for consumers," said Dennis Poon, Huawei Device's global UI design director, in the release.

"The team was very conscious about placing people before technology," Poon said, adding the design team asked consumers what their ideal interactive experience would be like before undertaking the UI.

Putting the 'you' in UI

To that end, Huawei hosted a number of consumer forums and salons to read what was and wasn't working with its devices.

One of the biggest improvements to come out of those powwows and into the UI is a "Smart Tutorial" function, designed to bring first time users up to snuff on how to operate their phone.

In other areas, Huawei's pushing for customization and simplification, as seen in the "Me Widget" property that lets users condense their most go-to information and functions into a single, customized folder.

The homepage is also customizable as are folders for specific apps, though users be warned deleting an app folder takes all contents with it.

Huawei's reportedly come with with 20 Emotion themes available online, accessible to users who don't want one of six pre-loaded Android skins, including an Android 4.0 stock theme.

Poon also told TechRadar during the conference that the company plans to roll out Emotion UI updates monthly, tweaking it as consumers see fit.

Consumers can download the Chinese-only UI Friday, when the company will also ask for feedback on the experience and development process.

Emotion's public release shouldn't be too far off, though the company will announce a date closer to the launch.

TechRadar has more Huawei at IFA news, including the lowdown on some able-bodied Androids.

HTC Desire X: When will you get it?

HTC Desire X: When will you get it?

The HTC Desire X is hot property after its IFA 2012 debut, so when will you get your hands on it and how much will it set you back?

We've been hunting down the UK networks to find out what the deal is.

Phones4U ? the retailer was first past the post with HTC Desire X UK pricing, promising the handset alone for free on a 20.50 a month tariff. Phones4U has the exclusive on the white edition of the Desire X, and you can also get it bundled with Beats Solo over-ear headphones if you're willing to shell out 26 a month or more.

You can pre-register with Phones4U now but it's playing it coy on an official HTC Desire X release date.

Vodafone ? the big red network has confirmed that it will be offering the HTC Desire X but it's keeping price and release date info on the down low for now.

O2 ? we've been in touch with O2 but it hasn't yet confirmed anything to do with the Desire X.

Everything Everywhere ? similarly, Everything Everywhere is keeping its HTC Desire X cards close to its chest, no guarantee that it will be offering it yet.

Three ? We're also still waiting to hear from Three, the data-friendly network, about if and when it will be offering the HTC Desire X.

Oct. 29 flagged as Microsoft Windows Phone 8 launch

Oct. 29 flagged as Microsoft Windows Phone 8 launch

Looks like we'll get some Microsoft trick-or-treat gifts as new reports point to October as the time Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices are officially unleashed on the market.

An anonymous source speaking with ZDNet said a series of Softie-sponsored events point to some specific squares on the calendar as key dates for devices touting the new OS.

Windows 8 will be available to the public Oct. 26, but it looks like Microsoft is planning a pre-launch party the day before to officially unveil the OS.

It'll actually share the stage with the Surface RT, ZDNet's source said, in a New York City event. Microsoft has confirmed the tablet is going on sale Oct. 26, so no big surprise there.

There's more...

A few days later - Oct. 29 - the source reported Windows Phone 8 gets its official launch. Rumor has it the sendoff will be in San Francisco or Los Angeles.

Apparently, the 29th is thought of as a "consumer launch."

Devices packing Windows Phone 8 should be available a few weeks later, or early November.

We've already seen some Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 devices thanks to Samsung's revelation of some key products at IFA 2012 Tuesday. Among them are the Ativ S, a Windows 8 smartphone, and the Ativ Tab, which runs on Windows RT, though we don't have release dates for these devices yet.

Christmas can come early, right?

Apple to introduce AirPlay Direct at iPhone 5 launch event?

Apple to introduce AirPlay Direct at iPhone 5 launch event?

Apple may be about to launch a new version of its AirPlay streaming solution, which would negate the need for Wi-Fi connectivity.

The rumoured AirPlay Direct technology will be announced alongside the iPhone 5 next month, according to a report from The Telegraph.

AirPlay Direct, which the Tele says is a working title rather than an official name, would allow iDevice owners to wirelessly send music to compatible speakers even with no Wi-Fi present

This new service would enable the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to form a separate network with the speakers.

Although the Telegraph doesn't mention the specific solution, one would have to assume the link-up would be Bluetooth based.

Parklife.

If it comes to fruition, AirPlay Direct would be ideal for listening to music in the park, taking your speakers on holiday or on those pesky occasions when Wi-Fi is hard to come by.

According to 'sources familiar with Apple's plans,' the company has not signed-off on the technology or licensed it to any manufacturers at the time of writing.

With everyone and their dog expecting the iPhone 5 to be launched on September 12, things may start moving very quickly on that front.

NFC chip sighting in iPhone 5 assembly photos

NFC chip sighting in iPhone 5 assembly photos

What appears to be a near-field communication chip was spotted in some recently leaked assembly photos allegedly taken of the iPhone 5.

The photos were leaked by a photobucket account belonging to a user going by the name "meme_168."

They show the front panel of the Apple's upcoming iDevice in all of its unassembled glory.

What we can tell from the photos is that the iPhone 5's front camera moved - now located above the earpiece rather than to the side. Where the camera once was is now home to a new chip that is strongly believed to be for NFC support.

While there are no markings on the chip to designate it as an NFC chip, the photos suggest it's consistent with 5x5 mm square NFC chips that are currently available.

Passbook to make NFC mainstream?

NFC support has long been rumored to be a part of Apple's next iPhone.

One of the key new features for iOS 6 is the new Passbook app, which lets users consolidate paperless boarding passes, receipts, tickets and other data onto their handset in one organized interface.

But with NFC support, the Passbook app could expand to be a source for mobile payments, holding credit card info and other payment data to replace the need for carrying cards with you.

Select Android handsets have already started to adopt NFC through the Google Wallet app, and Windows Phone 8 devices will support NFC as well.

NFC has yet to gain widespread traction in the market, in part due to the small number of devices that support the feature.

However, with the iPhone 5 seemingly on board, it could give NFC a significant boost to make it a new standard for mobile payments.

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to launch with Jelly Bean, larger screen confirmed

Samsung Galaxy Note 2 to launch with Jelly Bean, larger screen confirmed

With just days to go before Samsung is set to officially unveil the Galaxy Note 2, a Korean newspaper has published what it claims are the "phablet's" final specs.

The Galaxy Note successor will launch with Android 4.1: Jelly bean, according to Seoul Newspaper.

And, according to previous rumors, the Galaxy Note 2's screen will be even larger than its predecessor's, measuring 5.5 inches (compared to the original's 5.3 inches).

That's sure to turn on anyone who liked the original Galaxy Note's hybrid phone/tablet form, and anyone who wouldn't want an even bigger screen probably wouldn't buy the Note or Note 2 anyway.

Haters gonna hate

The Samsung Galaxy Note's bigger screen is going to be its main draw, as otherwise the new phablet is similar to its predecessor.

The resolution is the same, at 1280x720 when Android's on-screen buttons are factored in.

And reports indicate that it'll sport a 1.4GHz quad-core Exynos 4412 chip, a Samsung Super AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a choice between 16GB or 32GB of storage.

But while the specs remain similar, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2's physical form could be altered slightly.

It still won't fit in your pocket

With 5.5 inches of gorgeous screen real estate, the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 isn't likely to fit in anyone's pockets, unless they're wearing cargo shorts (and who wears cargo shorts anymore?).

But the report claims that the stylus-equipped phablet's edges have been smoothed or rounded, so the Note 2 may in fact look slicker than the first Note.

And sources speculate that Samsung's flexible screen technology could play a role in the Galaxy Note 2, allowing the screen to curve slightly with the device's form and thus be slightly easier to jam in a pocket.

Expect to know more at Samsung's Unpacked event at IFA 2012 on August 29.

Apple v Samsung: it's not over yet

Apple v Samsung: it's not over yet

After Apple was awarded damages of over $1billion (660 million), TechRadar spoke to lawyers to see why the figure was so large.

They believe the verdict could potentially have been avoided, and that this case certainly isn't over yet.

Linda Kennedy, a patent lawyer interviewed by TechRadar about the trial, said that both parties could have potentially walked away with money for their coffers, though the jury clearly ruled Samsung's arguments didn't hold water in the court of law.

She also said that, no matter the outcome, the decision will go to an appeals court.

"I think there will be [an appeal] because if the parties are willing to wait for a jury verdict, they'll be willing to go to appeals," she said.

Don't leave it to consumers

The case may even find its way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Another attorney, Vicki Salmon of IP Asset, told TechRadar that Apple and Samsung's decision to take their battle to court is none too surprising when considering the damages involved.

"When there is enough at stake, companies will take to patent litigation and not just leave it to consumers to vote for the best product," she said.

"But when there is enough at stake, companies will also see how they can best position themselves within the confines of the existing system, in order to bolster their monopoly positions."

Samsung found guilty of patent infringement, Apple awarded over $1 billion

Samsung found guilty of patent infringement, Apple awarded over $1 billion

Samsung willfully infringed on a number of Apple patents, a nine-member jury ruled Friday, dashing Samsung's hopes of taking on tech's biggest name and walking away unscathed.

The decision leaves Samsung to pay $1.049 billion in damages to the Cupertino company and signals the end to one of the most closely watched and hotly contested patent trials in history.

That figure is down $2 million from $1.051 billion after discrepancies were found in the jury's ruling.

The seven men and two women of the jury also rejected Samsung's countersuit, meaning the South Korean company will walk away with nothing.

The verdict brings an end to the four-week patent trial that left spectators and the industry reeling at the inner workings of two of the world's largest and most clandestine companies.

In the end, the verdict probably surprised even the lawyers who argued all the way to the end.

Verdict unfolds

Design by design, patent by patent, U.S. District judge Lucy Koh read through the jury's decision, finding Samsung guilty on multiple counts of patent infringement for handfuls of Apple patents.

The biggest violators among Samsung's accused devices were the Fascinate, Epic 4G and Galaxy SII.

For the Fascinate alone, Samsung must pay $143 million in damages.

It took the jury just over 21 hours to come to its decision, which hands Apple a win in a suit where they accused Samsung of stealing the technologies and designs that made their signature products - the iPhone and iPad - some of the most successful products in the world.

Key to Apple's victory was the jury's decision that its patents were in fact valid. Samsung relied on this accusation in the hopes of eroding Apple's claims that Samsung took designs and technologies that were wholly unique.

The jury didn't find it that way.

Samsung's violations

Samsung devices like the Galaxy S 4G, Prevail, Vibrant, Infuse 4G and many more violated technology patents for features like "bounce-back," "pinch and zoom" and "tap and zoom," the jury ruled.

The company was also found guilty of violating Apple patents covering designs like flat screens and rounded edges, as well as diluting the iPhone 3's trade dress in at least six Samsung devices.

Most damning of all, and perhaps the greatest influencer for the amount of damages it must now pay, was the jury's finding of Samsung's willfulness in its actions.

The jury determined that Samsung "knew or should have known" it was leading its divisions to copy Apple's designs and technologies, showing clear intent and little hope for Samsung's claims against Apple finding a favorable ruling.

From the wreckage

Not much can be salvaged for Samsung from the jury's verdict, but one silver lining is that not all of its devices were found to be in violation.

The jury didn't find Samsung's Galaxy tablets infringed the iPad's designs patents, letting Samsung escape further damages.

How Apple, and Samsung, emerge from this case - and what effect the ruling will ultimately have on the technology industry moving forward - will have implications for years to come.

Tune into TechRadar for developments as they unfold.

Apple and Samsung copied each other, says South Korean court

Apple and Samsung copied each other, says South Korean court

In the ultimate fence-sitting move, a court in South Korea has ruled that Apple and Samsung copied each other's patents.

The punishment for all this sincere flattery seems harshest on the gadget fans of South Korea, given that it means a temporary sales ban on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad and iPad 2, as well as the Galaxy S, S2, Galaxy Tab and Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Samsung was cleared of any design imitations, but found guilty of infringing on Apple's patent relating to the little screen bounce you get when you scroll to the end of a page.

Apple's violations are more technical, based on Samsung-created telecom standards relating to data transmission.

Pay up

As a result, Apple comes out of the trial worse off, ordered to pay damages of 40m South Korean won (22,000, $35,000) to Samsung. Samsung only has to pay Apple 25m won (14,000, $22,000) in damages; so if Apple just pays Samsung 15m won, they can all call it quits.

It's not quite quitting time in the US though, where the hard-fought trial between the two companies is currently under jury's deliberation.

Over in the US, Apple is looking for $2.5 billion (1.6 billion) in damages from Samsung for its alleged copying; including what Apple reckons is some serious design homage.

We're not questioning the impartiality of the courts, but in South Korea Samsung had the home advantage ? will Apple reap any benefits on its home turf in the US?

Nokia, Samsung and 20 others create coalition to improve indoor location-based services

Nokia, Samsung and 20 others create coalition to improve indoor location-based services

It's no secret that indoor positioning technology isn't ideal - anyone who's tried to pinpoint their location while inside an office, convention center or other large building can attest to that.

Now 22 tech companies, including Nokia, Samsung and Sony Mobile, have banded together to form the In-Location Alliance, a Justice League for the victims of poor indoor positioning everywhere.

The member companies forming the In-Location Alliance have vowed to make indoor positioning services more accurate, efficient, mobile, and easy to implement and use, according to a press release from Nokia.

Sony followed up with another press release, stating that the Alliance was formed "with the goal of driving the innovation and development of indoor positioning."

An indoor mapping dream team

The In-Location Alliance is comprised of companies that range from phone and other device manufacturers to mapmakers and semiconductor experts.

In addition to Nokia, Samsung and Sony, here are the other participating companies:

  • Broadcom
  • CSR
  • Dialog Semiconductor
  • Eptisa
  • Geomobile
  • Indra
  • Insiteo
  • Nomadic Solutions
  • Nordic Semiconductor
  • Nordic Technology Group
  • NowOn
  • Primax Electronics
  • Qualcomm
  • RapidBlue Solutions
  • Seolane Innovation
  • TamperSeal AB
  • Team Action Zone
  • Visioglobe

Their solutions will reportedly be based on Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi technologies.

Following pilots from Alliance member companies this year, the indoor location solutions could be implemented in some devices as soon as 2013, according to official reports.

The hero this industry needs

"The aim of the In-Location Alliance is to act as a pioneer opening up new business streams for indoor environments," reads a press release credited to the Alliance itself in Nokia's press release.

"Indoor positioning is the next frontier of mobile services, offering great opportunities to enhance consumer experiences."

There are certainly some high-profile firms involved, though it seems two of the companies who would have the most interest in improved indoor mapping tech - Google and Apple - are conspicuously missing.

TechRadar reached out to the Alliance to find out whether these companies were approached about joining up.

In the announcement, the Alliance does note that it's open to any company "who is ready to further investigate business opportunities in indoor location based services and see value and benefits in industry collaboration," so maybe it's not too late.

The iphone is remarkably durable, considering how elegant it feels in your hand. But as others have commented, it really depends where an iphone is dropped that determines whether or not you end up with a $600 brick.

In my case, the *one* time I took my iPhone out of the Incase case I bought for it (which as bkeene correctly described, is a piece of crap, but definitely protects it against droppage), it accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on its back glass side up. A few minutes later, I noticed my WiFi signal get gradually weaker, and in about 5 minutes, the phone was completely bricked--no wifi signal, no EDGE and the phone actually popped up an error message saying, in essence, that my phone is in fact, bricked and could no longer make calls. This from a modest fall of around 12 inches above a ceramic tiled floor.

Thankfully there was no visible damage to the unit, so I took it into my local Genius Bar, played dumb (often referring to my self-hacked WRT54 wireless router as "my wireless thingy"), and recieved a new replacement unit a few days later.

It absolutely freaks me out to think what would happen if the glass broke or something. After the first year of ownership, Applecare is worth buying for laptops and ipods, but it really sucks that they don't protect you against accidental damage, considering how much they charge you for Applecare. So I'm on the "iPhone insurance is worth it" side of the fence.

J.D. Power ranks Verizon highest in network quality

J.D. Power ranks Verizon highest in network quality

J.D. Power and Associates released its latest rankings for U.S. wireless providers, placing Verizon at the top of the pack.

The survey questioned wireless users from across the country on overall network performance and key areas like dropped or lost calls, audio issues, failed text messages, and slow download speeds.

For purposes of the survey, the country was split into six regions represented by the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, North Central, Southwest, and West areas.

In five of those regions, Verizon consistently outperformed other wireless carriers with fewer customer complaints over dropped calls, connection issues, and transmission failures. This was the 16th consecutive report where Verizon ranked best in the Northeast region.

"This latest study once again speaks loudly and clearly to the outstanding performance of the Verizon Wireless network in terms of customer satisfaction," said Verizon chief technical officer Nicola Palmer.

"With our 4G LTE high-speed network's blazing fast speeds and superior nationwide coverage, Verizon Wireless remains committed to providing its customers with the best networks, devices and innovative services."

The Midwest disagrees

The one region keeping Verizon from a U.S. monopoly on network quality was the North Central region, which ranked US Cellular just slightly above Verizon.

The North Central region consists of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

US Cellular seems to be the local favorite for the Great Lakes states, with this marking the 14th consecutive top ranking for the carrier.

J.D. Power and Associates conducts its Wireless Network Quality Performance Study twice per year, surveying approximately 27,000 wireless users across the country.
