As an avid cyclist who commutes to work on a bicycle you probably understand why bicycles are so beneficial to society. The more bicycles then the less reliance we have on fossil fuels and the healthier our environment is. The more cyclists also make it safer for other cyclists as there are more bikes and fewer cars on the road. Another often over-looked benefit is that when there are more cyclists then there will be more bicycle shops. More bicycle shops equal better pricing and more choices. H...

iPad mini vs iPad: Mini Packs More Screen for Its Much-Tinier Size

Even though iPad mini may come in a smaller package, it still packs a lot of screen real estate into its form factor with its 7.9" display compared to iPad's 9.7". In fact, the display-to-size ratio is significantly better on iPad mini. For the trade-off in dimensions, iPad mini provides a superior screen real estate that will not feel all that cramped for regular iPad users. Exactly how much of the display does iPad mini, with its absolutely immense reduction in size and weight, pack compared to iPad? Read on for the specifics.

What is iPad Mini? A Full (Stylized) Rundown of Apple?s New Tablet

Just moments ago, Apple has unveiled the iPad's smaller, thinner brother (or cousin, we would even venture as far as sister) in the form of iPad mini. iPad mini seems to strike the right chords with its size, battery life, performance, and price for a tablet of this form factor.

It's the love child of iPad and iPhone 5's jewel of a design,

another premium product that pushes the tablet lust factor ahead (if we were to be as bold to proclaim that). Not only is it available in two color options with a total-black or white design, but for the first time iPad is being offered in a slate-colored aluminum back on the black option. Raw silver aluminum adorns the back of the white. Diamond-cut chamfering brings the appearance together, providing a top-of-the-line finish. Continue reading for our full, stylized iPad mini rundown.

Google Android event cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy

Google Android event cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy

The threat caused to the U.S east coast by Hurricane Sandy has caused Google to postpone Monday's Android launch event.

The company was expected to announce its latest line up of Nexus products as well as improvements to Android Jelly Bean in New York at 10am ET (2pm UK time).

However, with the megastorm moving its way up the eastern seaboard throughout the weekend and public transport services suspended in New York City, Google has decided it's better to be safe than sorry.

As yet, the company has not announced when the event will now take place.

The brief statement read: "We are canceling our Monday morning event in New York due to Hurricane Sandy. We will let you know our plans as soon as we know more."

Longer wait

It means a longer wait for the LG Nexus 4 smartphone, which was set to go on sale on Tuesday.

A Samsung Nexus 10 tablet has also mean heavily tipped, while a 32GB 3G-capable Nexus 7 tablet is a near certainty also.

TechRadar will bring word of when the event will now take place as soon as it is announced.

Apple to open Palo Alto store on Saturday

Apple plans to open a retail store in downtown Palo Alto, Calif., on Saturday. The new store, less than two blocks from Apple?s existing location, appears set to share the all-glass front common on Apple retail outlets but was still covered in black sheeting on Friday morning.

Apple hasn?t said much about the store. The tight-lipped company has a teaser on its website but it gives away little about what shoppers can expect on Saturday.

Architectural renderings, provided to the town?s planning board, picture a storefront and roof made of glass with concrete pillars on each corner supporting the structure. City documents suggest the store will have around 15,000 square feet (about 1,400 square meters) of retail space.

The design is a world away from Apple?s existing Palo Alto store, which was first opened in October 2001 and had the distinction of being Steve Jobs? local Apple store. Both stores are also close to the Palo Alto home of current Apple CEO Tim Cook.

Rumors say Apple may once again be planning a streaming audio service, la Pandora. Reports say it would focus on music streaming to apps on iOS devices and would probably be supported by ads. Because that?s the part of radio that I have been missing most of all.

LG Nexus 4's wireless charging pad looks futuristic in leaked image

LG Nexus 4's wireless charging pad looks futuristic in leaked image

The LG Nexus 4 may be an even more poorly-kept secret than even Apple's iPad mini was, and that's saying something.

But one of the earliest LG Nexus 4 rumors, which surfaced in early October just a day after the LG Nexus phone was first outed, claimed that the Jelly Bean handset would support wireless charging right out of the box.

Now, we may have proof of such a feature.

On Friday, an image supposedly showing what the LG Nexus 4's wireless charging pad will look like was leaked to the internet by an "anonymous tipster."

The charger of the future

Wireless charging seems on the cusp of industry-wide adoption, with high-profile devices like the Nokia Lumia 920 and now the LG Nexus 4 apparently jumping eagerly on board.

Friday's leaked image shows a disc-shaped platform with a curved base and a rubbery-looking top surface with "nexus" etched into it.

PhoneArena, the original recipient of the image, pointed out that the supposed charging pad sort of resembles Google's Nexus Q media-streaming orb, which itself resembles some alien artifact from the Assassin's Creed video games.

It could be the real deal - or it could be a fake mock-up made by someone with too much free time.

Only the official LG Nexus 4 announcement, believed to be arriving at an Android event Monday, will tell for sure.

The wireless charging competition

However the LG Nexus 4's wireless charging accessory winds up, it'll face stiff competition in the Nokia Lumia 920 and Lumia 820's options.

Three varieties of wireless charging accessories for Nokia's Windows Phone 8 handsets are currently available for pre-order: the plate, the stand and the "Fatboy pillow."

All three options will be available in colors to match the Lumia phones themselves, including red, yellow, blue, white and black.

According to the latest reports, though, the LG Nexus 4 will only be available in black or white, so the Nokia phones may well have the advantage - aesthetically, at least.

Healthy figures mean more ads coming to Facebook's mobile apps

Healthy figures mean more ads coming to Facebook's mobile apps

Facebook came clean about its plans for the future in an earnings call yesterday, talking up the potential for its mobile business and healthier-than-expected income for Q3 2012.

Having revealed that Facebook made over 14 per cent of its advertising income from mobile ads (equating to around $150 million/ 92m/ AU$144m), CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors that mobile is a key part of the company's future.

"I think our opportunity on mobile is the most misunderstood aspect of Facebook today," CEO Mark Zuckerberg told investors.

"As proud as I am that a billion people use Facebook each month, I'm also really happy that over 600 million people now share and connect on Facebook every month using mobile devices."

Spectappular

He added that 126 million users accessed Facebook only through a mobile device in September and that the mobile trend can mean only dollar-signs for the social network.

"First, mobile will give us the opportunity to reach way more people than desktop," he explained.

"Second, people on mobile use Facebook more often. And, third, long term, I think we're going to monetise better per amount of time spent on mobile than desktop."

So what does this mean for the average Facebook user? Probably more adverts on the move; Zuck sees mobile ads becoming more "like TV" in that they're integrated into the app itself rather than simply displayed alongside.

You can already see the beginnings of this in the undismissable sponsored posts popping up in your mobile newsfeed.

Facebook's shares rose 19 per cent on the strength of the announcements, the site's highest ever rise since it went public back in May.

Instawhat

The financial filing also revealed the final amount that Facebook bought photo-sharing app Instagram for: a total of $715 million (around 443m/ AU$688m).

It's a lot lower than filter-happy photography app's reported price tag of $1 billion because a certain percentage of the payment was made in shares, which lost value as Facebook struggled on the stock market.

Still, what do you expect from a company that prides itself on being like a chair?

New photo might show Samsung Galaxy Premier

New photo might show Samsung Galaxy Premier

A new image showing off Samsung phone GT-I9260, otherwise known as the Galaxy Premier popped up Friday.

The photo shows a sleek little white phone and is purportedly sourced from Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC), an agency like the U.S.'s Federal Communications Commission.

No specs accompanied the photo, though it does provide a more full-bodied image of the phone than another leak that surfaced earlier this week.

When and where this phone will land remains a mystery, though this new revelation points to a Taiwan release happening sooner rather than later.

Premier parts

According to @evleaks, which published the week's first Premier shot, the phone will have 1GB of RAM, a microSD slot for up to 32GB of extra storage, an LED flash and Samsung's TouchWiz user interface.

It should also run Android 4.1: Jelly Bean and host Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and DLNA.

What's more, users should find a 4.65-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 180 x 720 and an 8-megapixel camera.

The processor is pegged as a 1.5GBz dual-core chip, and the Premier will likely include Wi-Fi and 16GB of internal memory.

Depending on how Samsung prices the Premier, it could be one hot little number.

HTC reports Q3 profit of $133M, says disappointing period ahead

HTC reports Q3 profit of $133M, says disappointing period ahead

Rough and tumble HTC, the Taiwanese company banking on phones like the Windows Phone 8X and recently announced J Butterfly to push it forward, announced its third quarter financials Friday.

The company reports a net profit of about $133 million (82.6, AUD$128.5), down 79 percent from $639 million (around UK397, AUD$617) during the same period one year ago.

Revenue stood at $2.4 billion (UK1.49, AUD$2.31) last quarter, down from $4.64 billion (UK2.88, AUD$4.48) last year, or a 48 percent drop.

Moving into the fourth quarter, HTC expects revenue to fall to around $2.05 billion (UK1.27, AUD$1.98) as it struggles with an operating margine of one percent.

That leaves the firm with a pre-tax income of slightly over $20 million (UK1.24, AUD$19.3) for Q4.

Not in Nokia's shoes

Despite the tough figures coming out of Taiwan, HTC could at least pat itself on the back for earning an IDC rank as one of the top five smartphone vendors last quarter. IDC is a market intelligence firm.

HTC, along with Samsung (No.1), Apple, RIM and ZTE all made the cut as the largest smartphone manufacturers. Nokia, on the other hand, didn't.

The Finnish company fell from No. 3 during the second quarter to not even making the top five.

Samsung claimed 31.1 percent of the market, followed by Apple at 15 percent (up from 13.8 percent a year ago). RIM took 4.3 percent, a drop from 9.6 percent during the same period last year, while ZTE nabbed 4.2 percent.

HTC squeaked by with 4 percent.

Nokia also has Windows Phone 8 devices dropping on the market soon, with most eyes centered on the Lumia 920 to lead the charge.

Microsoft has offered its support for both HTC and Nokia, including both firms on invites to its WP8 kickoff event Monday.

Though both are getting some strong Washington backing, the two firms seemed poised to fight for market scraps.

EE defends lack of unlimited 4G data plan, claims it would be abused

EE defends lack of unlimited 4G data plan, claims it would be abused

EE has defended its decision not to offer unlimited data plans on its new 4G LTE network.

The network announced its tariffs earlier this week with 500MB, 1GB, 3GB, 5GB and 8GB two-year plans available ranging from 36 all the way upto 56 a month.

Pippa Dunn, EE's consumer CMO, told TechCrunch that they didn't feel it was necessary to take the step as only "super techies" want unlimited data and catering to them would have forced the prices up further.

She said: "You've got your super techie people? who would love nothing more than for us to have given unlimited data packages but for the vast majority of the 27 million who are our customers they don't need it.

"If we'd had to price for allowing all of those techie users to be able to use as much data as they'd want your average consumer would really have suffered."

Network abusers

Dunn said, on average, Orange and T-Mobile customers are falling way below their allocations and by offering unlimited data the company would have attracted people who would abuse the network.

She added: "We've looked at what customers are using at the moment and on average an Orange customer on a 36 plan uses less than 500MB a month and those customers who are on unlimited plans on T-Mobile Full Monty on average use 1.5GB.

"We don't think [unlimited data is] necessary [for 4GEE]. The only thing that happens when you get an unlimited data plan is you attract the people who cane the network and that's not great for any consumer.

"There will be customers on our network who are using 50GB of data a month? so you end up with customers who are basically making the service worse for all other consumers."

EE's 4G network goes live on October 30 and will, initially, offer LTE connectivity on the iPhone 5 with more handsets incoming by the end of 2012.

Sony Odin handset may sport WhiteMagic screen technology

Sony Odin handset may sport WhiteMagic screen technology

Sony's flagship handset for 2013 is rumoured to pack a 5-inch display and new reports suggest it will also sport WhiteMagic technology.

We heard about a super-sized screen earlier this month after Japanese display manufacturer JDI revealed it was producing 5-inch, 1080p screens with an impressive 443ppi pixel density.

The screen has been linked with the Sony Odin, which is expected to be the Japanese firm's flagship handset for 2013, and new reports suggest it could be packing some seriously clever tech.

It's a kind of magic

Earlier this year Sony explained to TechRadar that the WhiteMagic tech was stuck at 4-inches, which pours a certain amount of cold water on the possibility of this rumour coming true.

According to a recent press release from JDI, the firm is readying prototypes of a 5-inch WhiteMagic display which boasts a 438ppi pixel density ? slightly lower than the initial reports we saw from the firm, but never the less still very impressive.

One of the big selling points of the WhiteMagic screen is that it conserves power much more effectively and JDI claims it will have "low power consumption that is approximately 50% less by utilizing an RGBW pixel structure".

This will be a massive bonus for smartphone manufactures, as bigger screens and more powerful innards currently drain batteries quicker than you can say "where's my charger?"

As well as saving battery, the WhiteMagic technology also has another trick up its sleeve: instead of keeping you going for longer, it can be switched to double the brightness of the display, ensuring that your face is illuminated like a Christmas tree.

We can't be sure if the 5-inch, WhiteMagic display will make it into Sony's flagship smartphone next year, but we wouldn't be surprised if it did.

I was constantly dropping phones, so I got a rubber case for my Blackberry from Speck. They make a similar product for the iPhone. I can vouch for its resilience.

HOWEVER, there are two serious caveats:

- Bulk and aesthetics. You've got a big, knobby piece of rubber on your lovely iPhone.

- It's rubber, so it can be sometimes frustrating to dig out of your pocket without turning the whole thing inside-out. And forget putting it into any slim-fitting clothes.

In the end, I ditched the case and forced myself to be more diligent. I now have no case and can't remember the last time I dropped it (*knock on wood*).

I, too, have a Speck case and a screen overlay for my iPhone.

The Speck ToughCase is ugly -- UGLY!! -- but makes your device invincible. I've dropped it multiple times on concrete, have gotten it dirty, damp, and used it in extremely rugged conditions. Thanks to the case, the device remains as pristine as the day I got it.

The Speck cleans easily; just remove the phone and scrub the case under some water. When it dries, it's like new. It has yet to stretch, even after multiple cleanings. The screen overlay is also nice. If you are careful when applying it the first time, the display will look natural, if slightly matted. (Think photographs.) Another benefit of an overlay is that doesn't get smudgy or oily like the naked screen, and can be wiped clean with any towel or shirt available.

The case I really want is coming soon from OtterBox.

Incidentally, this is my second iPhone. I had no case for the first, and dropped it the week I got it. (I turn into Kramer when I make calls, apparently.) The back metal casing scratched on impact in multiple places. Thankfully, it had dead pixels anyway, and Apple replaced it.

Samsung Galaxy Premier gets ever more likely

Samsung Galaxy Premier gets ever more likely

The Samsung Galaxy Premier has appeared online again, with another benchmarking site leaking details about the rumoured smartphone.

Last week we saw Antutu reveal details about much talked out handset, which came after reports claiming Samsung was working on a handset to slide in between the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Nexus.

More details have now appeared, this time on the GL Benchmark website, which shows the Galaxy Premier as packing a PowerVR SGX 544 GPU, alongside two 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 processors.

Middle of the road

In terms of benchmark results, as we saw last week with the Antutu leak, the Galaxy Premier looks to be a pretty middle of the road handset, but it's still running a development version of Jelly Bean, so performance may increase in the finished product.

According to rumours the Samsung Galaxy Premier is also expected to have a 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display, 8MP rear camera, 2MP front facing camera and measure 133.97 x 68.1 x 8.8mm.

Samsung is yet to confirm or deny the existence of the Galaxy Premier, and there's currently no word on its potential release date or price.

Study finds security holes in Android apps millions download

Study finds security holes in Android apps millions download

Those free third-party apps for Android may not be as secure as most consumers think.

A group of computer scientists showed that as many as 185 million Android users could be exposing online banking info and social network credentials along with email/IM contacts and content.

The researchers identified 41 apps on Google's Play Market for Ice Cream Sandwich that leaked important information as it goes from phone to end server.

The scientists didn't publicly identify the infected apps but did say they were downloaded 39.5 million to 185 million times. Researchers blamed certificate authorities and websites for not putting in the proper protections.

The group, which consist of computer scientists from Germany's Leibniz University of Hannover and Philipps University of Marburg, presented its findings at this week's Computer and Communications Security conference.

Attacking Android

The scientists recreated app use on a local area network to test an array of well-known exploits to steal sensitive information.

The researchers were able to break the secure sockets layers (SSL) and transport layer security (TLS) protocols used by apps to protect user's info. Though SSL and TLS technology is considered generally safe, breaches can occur when developers or websites don't take the proper steps to protect users.

"We could gather bank account information, payment credentials for PayPal, American Express and others," the researchers wrote in their paper.

"Furthermore, Facebook, email and cloud storage credentials and messages were leaked, access to IP cameras was gained and control channels for apps and remote servers could be subverted."

Android app: the study

The scientists started by downloading 13,500 free apps from Google Play and tested whether their SSL implementation was vulnerable to exploitation.

The researchers were curious how well these apps could stand up to Man-In-The-Middle (MITM) attacks, which target information that transfers over public Wi-Fi hotspots and other insecure networks.

After the static analysis the team found that 8 percent (or 1,074 apps) contained "SSL specific code that either accepts all certificates or all hostnames for a certificate and thus are potentially vulnerable to MITM attacks."

The researchers then picked 100 of the apps to manually audit by connecting them to a network that used an SSL proxy.

The findings

In some cases, apps accepted SSL certificates that were signed by the researchers even though they weren't a valid certificate authority. Other accepted certificates authorized a domain name to access user's data that wasn't the site the app was supposed to access.

Scientists successfully used SSLstrip attacks as well, which replaced SSL protocols with their own unencrypted version. Some apps also accepted certificates signed by authorities that were no longer valid.

Examples include an anti-virus app which accepted invalid certificates and allowed the team to feed its own malicious signature. Also a third-party app for a "popular Web 2.0 site with up to 1 million users" leaked Facebook and Google credentials when logged onto those sites.

The researches didn't disclose what specific apps were vulnerable, presumably so the susceptible apps wouldn't be branded easy targets. Instead they used general terms such as "very popular cross-platform messaging service."

Most of the programs used in the study seemed to be free, third-party apps rather than the official versions from sites and services.

Google not to blame, but can do plenty to help

The group also noted that none of the apps were developed by the search giant, but Google's engineers can help make these apps secure. One way is to make it clearer to users when the connection provided by an app is encrypted and when it isn't.

The study shows how vulnerable SSL and TLS protocols can be when developers don't take the proper steps to secure their infrastructures. Since SSL and TLS created the basis for almost all security for getting data from user to server, those software engineers should take note.

The authors pointed out a few methods Android developers can better protect their apps. One way is Certificate pinning, which makes it a lot tougher for apps to accept fake certificates.

But it seems like you get what you pay for when trusting sensitive information with a free third-party banking application.

Users looking to protect themselves can subject apps to the same static analysis as scientists did when downloading new programs. Or concerned users might want to refrain from transmitting personal data over public, unsecured Wi-Fi networks.

New Google Wallet on the way, ask for invite now

New Google Wallet on the way, ask for invite now

For those who haven't given Google Wallet a go yet, waiting just a while longer for the latest version of the service maybe a smart move.

Google announced Monday via its site dedicated to its mobile payment processing service that the "next version of Google Wallet" is coming soon.

Interested users can request an invite and must simply login using their Google login information.

From there, Google asks what kind of device users have - Android, iOS or "other."

Changes ahead

The procedural question actually carries with it ample significance as it indicates Google Wallet will soon be useable across platforms.

iOS compatibility is particularly noteworthy because it means the service won't need to rely on near-field communication (NFC) to work.

No NFC means carriers like AT&T and Verizon can join Sprint and Virgin Mobile in carrying Google Wallet-capable devices.

Until we know exactly what Google has in store for its mobile payment service, signing up for an invite might help stave off the curiosity.
