We Hate Downtime, Too! Where Has iPhone Alley Been?

It gives the team of the site a small dose of anguish to think that we put our fan-base through a month without iPhone Alley. Alas, while the lengthy downtime caused by a mixture of miscommunication and web host issues may have been a slight hamper on our relaunch festivities it takes more than a few issues behind-the-scenes to keep us from continuing our journey to re-establish the site as a key iOS blog.

Samsung denies rigging Galaxy S4 benchmarking results

Samsung denies rigging Galaxy S4 benchmarking results

In response to the accusation that it has been jimmying Galaxy S4 benchmark results just to make its handset look good, Samsung says nuh-uh guv'nor.

The company's statement explains that whatever GPU frequencies "BenchmarkBooster" rigged up on the Exynos 5 variant are "not intended to improve certain benchmark results" and the same maximum settings can just as easily be used to optimise performance on a users' handset based on what they're using it for.

That's as may be, Samsung, but using phrases like "BenchmarkBooster" in your code is still a bit suspicious in our book. It seems pretty clear that, regardless of whether these maxed out settings have real world use, Samsung was also hoping to beef up its benchmark results.

Now for the science

The full statement reads: "Under ordinary conditions, the Galaxy S4 has been designed to allow a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz.

"However, the maximum GPU frequency is lowered to 480MHz for certain gaming apps that may cause an overload, when they are used for a prolonged period of time in full-screen mode.

"Meanwhile, a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz is applicable for running apps that are usually used in full-screen mode, such as the S Browser, Gallery, Camera, Video Player and certain benchmarking apps, which also demand substantial performance.

"The maximum GPU frequencies for the Galaxy S4 have been varied to provide optimal user experience for our customers, and were not intended to improve certain benchmark results. We remain committed to providing our customers with the best possible user experience."

So to summarise: Samsung made sure its phone aced the benchmark tests, it got slightly found out, it justified the decision, phones keep going as before. Whoop.

Updated: Apple watchdog attack may have let the cheap iPhone cat out the bag

Updated: Apple watchdog attack may have let the cheap iPhone cat out the bag

Update: Apple issued a lengthy statement to the Wall Street Journal, claiming it has conducted 15 "comprehensive audits at Pegatron facilities since 2007," tracked working hours and has been in "close contact with China Labor Watch for several months, investigating issues they've raised and sharing our findings."

The company said that while it's addressed the issue of worker IDs being withheld, other claims are "new to us." It plans on sending auditors immediately to investigate.

Unsurprisingly, the company doesn't address any specific product in its statement.

Original article...

Apple's facing more criticism over worker conditions as a watchdog report, published today, says that things just aren't too great over at the factory of supplier Pegatron.

China Labor Watch reports labour violations galore, including poor working and living conditions, and the use of underage employees, following similar previous criticisms of Apple's other major supplier, Foxconn.

However, in the details of the CLW report, there's also some explicit acknowledgement of Apple's fabled budget iPhone which is currently putting the rumour mill into overdrive.

"During the period of our investigation, Pegatron Shanghai had begun producing the cheap iPhone," says the report. "This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple."

Devil in the details

While we certainly wouldn't call this cold hard evidence, it's probably more credible than the barrage of pictures claiming to be of the budget iPhone.

The plastic handset is referenced multiple times through the report. Speaking to VentureBeat, China Labor Watch comfirmed that the report was written in July, but had been compiled starting from March.

On the weekend even saw a photo claiming to be the phone's packaging, outing the handset as the iPhone 5C. If you don't buy that though, you can see what the TechRadar team reckons Apple's cheaper handset might be called when it arrives.

What will Apple name its budget device? We have a stab:

Facts about Childhood Obesity

A friend of mine told me her mom used to give her a snack when when she got home from school. A slice of white bread with butter and sugar. Come on, this is crazy. No wonder the diabetes rate is sky high. Whenever you have a problem with your health, what is the first thing people ask you?
What have you been eating? It all comes back to diet. It is just logical. We always associate the good old snack of a glass of milk and a peanut butter cookie. It's great to treat kids and it puts a smile on ...

Trouble in paradise? Nokia blasts Microsoft for Windows Phone app failings

Trouble in paradise? Nokia blasts Microsoft for Windows Phone app failings

Nokia has expressed frustration with Microsoft's failure to give smartphone users a convincing reason to switch to Windows Phone, in comments representing the first public signs of strain in the pair's relationship.

The Finnish company's vice president Bryan Biniak said Microsoft has not held up its end of the bargain because essential, frontline apps are still missing from the Windows Phone store.

In an interview with the IBTimes, Biniak said smartphone users are unwilling to compromise their mobile lives by switching to the platform, regardless of how impressive recent hardware releases have been.

He said Nokia is trying to 'change the culture' at Microsoft' in order to stress that the battle to overhaul iOS and Android cannot wait any longer.

Give me a reason

He said: "To give you a reason to switch, I need to make sure the apps that you care about on your device are not only on our phones, but are better. I also need to provide you unique experiences that you can't get on your other devices."

"People rely on applications for their day-to-day life and if you don't have something which I use in my day-to-day life I'm not going to switch [operating systems] because I don't want to compromise the way I live my life just to switch to a phone.

"It's not just about the hardware, it's about the tools that are on the hardware. You can't sell a phone without the apps, you just can't."

No time to waste

Nokia's recent launches have included the impressive Lumia 925 and the soon to be released 41-megapixel Lumia 1020 cameraphone.

However, the Finns are concerned these great handsets will stay under the radar for potential buyers due to Microsoft's lack of haste in attracting top developers to the platform

Biniak added: "We are releasing new devices frequently and for every new device, if there is an app that somebody cares about that's not there that's a missed opportunity of a sale.

"We are trying to evolve the cultural thinking [at Microsoft] to say 'time is of the essence.' Waiting until the end of your fiscal year when you need to close your targets, doesn't do us any good when I have phones to sell today."

If you want a job doing well...

Although the app gulf between Windows Phone and iOS and Android isn't as large as it was, Microsoft's platform is still missing apps like Instagram, a Facebook app worthy of the name, and of course, Google's impressive suite.

Nokia has attempted to take matters into its own hands, campaigning for the launch of Instagram on Windows Phone, while also securing an exclusive deal to bring FIFA '13 to Lumia Phones.

On that note, Biniak saved his most scathing comment until last. He said: "As a company we don't want to rely on somebody else and sit and wait for them to get it right."

Will Biniak's comments jar Microsoft into caring as much about Windows Phone as it does about Windows 8 and Xbox? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Review: Belkin?s Chambray Tab Cover for iPad mini is just your average folio case

True folio cases, such as Belkin?s $30 Chambray Tab Cover with Stand for the iPad mini, are pretty run-of-the-mill. They protect your mini fairly well, but they?re not terribly stylish. Luckily, the Chambray Tab Cover is a bit more stylish than most, though it does add some bulk.

The Chambray Tab Cover is a two-tone folio case that comes in four main colors: blue, pink, khaki, and dark gray. The case features a chambray fabric (that?s a plain weaved cotton, in non-textile speak), a dark gray faux-leather binding, and a dark gray faux-leather magnetic tab closure for keeping your mini protected.

Inside, the Tab Cover has four faux leather corners that hold the mini securely in place, as well as a soft gray lining that lies against the screen. The Tab Cover is both a cover and a stand?the case allows you to prop up your mini in at least three different landscape orientation angles. There are three small notches on the inside of the front cover to secure the cover in set angles, but the inner material is grippy enough that you can angle the mini pretty much however you like.

The Chambray Tab Cover?s corners make it easy to pop your mini in and out of the case. They?re surprisingly secure?not once did my mini fall on my face while I was trying to read in bed?but since they?re made of faux leather and not hard plastic, they can look a little off when compared to the rest of the design. The case leaves access to most of the mini?s ports and buttons, including the Sleep/Wake button, volume buttons, headphone jack, and Lightning port, and there?s a cutout for the rear-facing camera. You can still access the mini?s mute switch, though one of the corners does partly obscure it.

Question: Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops?

I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

Google is evidently working on real-time mobile translation tech

Google is evidently working on real-time mobile translation tech

Google has its sights set on the future with projects like Google Fiber and Google Glass, and now it's adding real time voice-to-voice translation to that list as well.

Google's Vice President of Android Hugo Barra said this week that Google is now in the early stages of creating real-time translation software that it hopes to perfect within the next "several years," according to The UK Times.

The company already has prototype phones that can translate speech in real time, so that a user speaks into the device in one language and the person on the other end hears it in a different one, like the fictional Babel fish in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" or the TARDIS in "Doctor Who."

"That is where we're headed," Barra told the publication. "We've got tons of prototypes of that sort of interaction, and I've played with it every other week to see how much progress we've made."

Same old hurdles

Google's speech-to-speech translation project is reportedly being developed as part of Google Now, Google services suite that's being designed to predict your needs before you know them.

The real-time translation is reportedly better for certain language pairs, such as Portuguese and English, but accuracy remains an issue.

Anyone who's tried to use Apple's Siri or Android's voice-to-text services knows that a little background noise can cause a lot of inaccuracies, and that's something Google is wrestling with still.

Google Translate

The groundwork for real-time, voice-to-voice translation certainly exists, though, between that speech recognition software and Google's online Google Translate service.

Google said that on that service alone it translates a billion entries per day in 71 languages, and it just added new languages from places like the Philippines, South East Asia and Indonesia.

Don't stop me now

Google discussed voice translation software back in 2010, when Google Distinguished Research Scientist and head of machine translation Franz Och offered this:

"We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years' time. Clearly, for it to work smoothly, you need a combination of high-accuracy machine translation and high-accuracy voice recognition, and that's what we're working on.

"If you look at the progress in machine translation and corresponding advances in voice recognition, there has been huge progress recently."

It would have been nice if he was right - we'd probably have real-time voice translation on our Galaxy S4 right now. But at least we know they're still working on it.

  • TechRadar spent a week with Google's newest search tool and wrote about what it's like living with Google Now.

Mac Gems: Get control of your Mac's desktop with Desktop Groups

Editor?s note: The following review is part of Macworld?s GemFest 2013. Every day (except Sunday) from mid-July until late September, the Macworld staff will use the Mac Gems blog to briefly cover a standout free or low-cost program. You can view a list of this year?s apps, updated daily, on our handy GemFest page, and you can visit the Mac Gems homepage for past Mac Gems reviews.

Does your desktop look like a war zone, with icons and documents scattered all over the place? You?re not alone, and Desktop Groups 1.4.1 (Mac App Store link) is a great way to keep your files organized.

The app allows you to divide off the contents of the desktop in arbitrary containers?appropriately called ?groups.? Each group can be home to as many files as you need, and, like a Finder window, can be resized to your liking; if its contents exceed the visible area, you can just scroll up and down with your trackpad or mouse until you find what you?re looking for.

A few additional features, such as the ability to list the contents of a directory right alongside its icon, support for customized background colors, and integration with Quick Look, make Desktop Groups an invaluable tool for getting a handle on your desktop clutter problem.

I did scratch my screen. My best guess is that it was a bit of sand in my pocket. Now there's about a 3mm scratch on the screen, which is all rainbow colored whenever the screen is white. Very distracting.

I got a plastic screen cover, which actually adds more funky spots on the screen (places where there are bubbles or fingerprints under the plastic) -- but at least they help distract me from the scratch! And I'm much less nervous now about sticking the phone in my pocket.

So: don't assume that they screens really are indestructible, is all.

I had a incase rubber case on mine for a few weeks here, and it provided good drop protection, but, the problem was getting it in and out of my pockets, stretched the rubber out, and now it is unusable. it also has a problem where dust gets into it, and will scratch the bevel around the screen.

Right now, I am rocking just a screen protector ( can't even notice it is there, and I like the extra insurance it provides).

The rubber incase is really nice though, and I have a buddy that got one after I did, and his is still really nice ( not stretched out).

Review: Create your own audible biography with StoryPress for iPad

If you?ve ever had a hankerin? to sit down and craft your own biography?or to collect the stories of your parents or grandparents before they pass on?StoryPress, a free iPad app from GhostGear Labs, is just the place to start. It helps you record oral histories that sound nearly as polished and professional as the Story Corps pieces you sometimes hear on NPR.

After you log in with an email address or your Facebook account, StoryPress wants you to jump right into the creative process. You?ll enter your name, the year of your birth, and then create a cover for your first book. (Despite the conceit that you?re creating a book in StoryPress, there?s very little text involved: You?ll be recording your memories, not typing them out.) The cover includes the title, an icon from a list provided by StoryPress, and a photo from your iPad library.

Your next prompt is to select a method to record your tale. Select ?Dictation? if you already know precisely the story you want to tell?just tap a button in the app and start recording while you talk. Most of us, though, will want to use the second option??Interview Me??which gives you a choice of more than a dozen categories, each featuring an interview template of roughly a dozen questions or more.

What it Takes to Become a Surfboard Shaper

I recently heard about and spoken to a couple of surfboard designers. If you want something specialized for a certain type of wave then this may not be for you, but there are a lot of people out there who are finding that surfboard making is acutally a lot more economoical. If you think about it, if you want a board for waves which are mushy and flat and another one for the bigger stuff then you soon you will find that your collection will start to build up, leaving you a little broke.
A good b...

Apple dropping as smartphone fans opt for Android

Apple dropping as smartphone fans opt for Android

Apple may have reported healthy iPhone sales this week, but its being dwarfed by its robotic competitor.

The recent IDC tracker findings, which look at the worldwide shipments and market share of all mobile phone makers, noted that Apple shifted 31.2 million iPhones in the last quarter, but only nabbed 13.1% of the market.

Apple and Samsung were the only two vendors in the top five to report a drop in market share, with LG, Lenovo and ZTE all clawing back some ground as Android handsets grew massively in popularity.

LG was one of the big winners in the last year, driven mostly by the popular Nexus 4 (although this was thanks to Google's incredible subsidy on the handset) as well as members of its Optimus G and F- and L-Series phones too.

Lenovo and ZTE grabbing fourth and fifth place respectively shows that China is becoming a key battleground in the smartphone war, and one that Apple has yet to come close to cracking thanks to ongoing battles to effectively range its handsets in the region.

Not the One?

HTC is once again absent from the rankings, despite gaining awards all over the world for its recent One handset.

The company has recently released the HTC One Mini, and it strongly tipped to re-enter the budget market soon, along with unveiling a phablet device, in order to address dwindling sales and profits.

Don't worry about Samsung though, as the South Korean brand is way out in front of the pack, with shipments of 72.4 million smartphones showing a huge increase on the 50 million shifted in the same period last year.

The rise of interest in the market is such that this actually led to a drop in its share, taking 30.4% of the market.

Nokia is still in second place in the overall worldwide mobile phone (including non-smartphones) market, lobbing 61.1 million units into the market to take 14.1%. It was a drop of 27% year on year, but we'll gloss over that.

So come back at the same time next year, to see if Huawei, HTC or Nokia can mount an assault on the top five. Set yourself a calendar reminder now, in case you forget. We'll wait.

Remains of the Day: It's new to you

The Mac mini may be due for a refresh, Verizon takes the iPhone import ban to the very top, and Apple may have to dig around in the sofa cushions to pay off the ebook pricefixing case. The remainders for Thursday, July 25, 2013 are news to me.

Mac Mini Shipping Times Slip to 5-7 Days on Apple Online Stores, Possible Refresh Ahead? (MacRumors)

Might an updated Mac mini be in the offing? MacRumors notes that ship times on them have slipped to 5-7 days, a possible indication that inventory is short. And, after all, Tim Cook promised a busy fall of product announcements, all the while mouthing ?Mac mini? to Peter Oppenheimer and winking.

Surf Tutorial - Getting Your Surfing Paddling Technique Right

If you were looking to learn about surfing, this is where you should begin, because an effective paddling technique comes first and foremost. Without paddling you are not going to get very far.
I don't think that going to the gym and getting muscles like Rafa Nadal is going to help. Sure, strong arms will help any surfer to a point, because your paddling muscles will propel you forward, but there is a certain skill involved about it as well. You have to be able to use your energy to the b...

Editing and annotating images with Preview

By now you?ve accumulated plenty of documents?music, movie, image, text, and PDF files?and at this point you may want to do something with those files beyond flinging them into folders. One of the best ways to get any such doing done is to double-click them. Try it and their default application opens. In the case of pictures and PDFs, that default application is Apple?s Preview.

As its name implies, Preview is designed to let you view documents. But it doesn?t have mystical all-seeing powers. Rather, it confines its talents to image and PDF files.

Preview?s ability to open image files is very broad. The application supports the major image formats?including those that bear the bmp, gif, jpeg, pict, png, and tiff extensions?as well as rarer file types. And it can export images to most major file types. In addition, you can use Preview to lightly edit these files. For instance, if you need to cut Cousin Jo-Jo out of a photo, you can use the Crop tool to do just that. You can also rotate images, adjust their color and size, annotate them, and select specific portions of them (everyone but Cousin Jo-Jo, for example).

Similarly, you?re not limited to viewing PDF files. You can combine multiple unprotected (meaning not locked by the document?s creator) PDF files into a single document; rearrange their page order; and annotate, crop, and sign PDFs.

White Moto X and clever clogs camera app break cover

White Moto X and clever clogs camera app break cover

When the Moto X finally does get its official launch there won't be much we don't already know about the handset, with further leaks revealing new camera features and a possibly low price point.

An image of the white Moto X was posted online by @evleaks - a Twitter account famous for accurately leaking phones and tablets - which seems to jive with other photos which appeared earlier this month.

The @evleaks account also gave us a heads up on the Moto X's battery, claiming that it will feature a 2200mAh power pack which won't be removable, just like the Nexus 4.

FutTv : 6E8RqMr77E5TQ

Meanwhile over at Android Community word's out that the Moto X could undercut the Nexus 4 in terms of price.

An unnamed tipster suggested the 16GB Moto X will come in at $299 (around 195, AU$320) - the same price as the 8GB Nexus 4 - with the 32GB version potentially costing $349 (around 230 AU$375).

Say cheese

Things may be getting more gesture-based too as another leak, this time from a questionable "anonymous tipster" on Android Police, claims to show a series of extensive screenshots from the Moto X's camera app.

Moto X - LEAK

The snaps show swiping gestures are required access the settings menu on the left of the screen, while the swipe from the right will take you into gallery - the latter of which is already a standard action in Android Jelly Bean.

That's not all. You'll also apparently be able to hold down on the screen to activate burst mode and take a rapid succession of snaps, while sliding a finger up or down the display will toggle the zoom level.

Moto X - LEAK

Google might be treating us to some new tricks as part of the camera app with slow-motion video capture and a "twist your wrist" action to launch the snapper.

We may be waiting until October before we actually find out if any of this Moto X talk is right, but Google is have a little breakfast get together tomorrow where Android 4.3 is expected to break cover and it could give us some clues.

BlackBerry A10's front and less-exciting back appear in Twitter pics

BlackBerry A10's front and less-exciting back appear in Twitter pics

The BlackBerry A10 has allegedly popped up in another photo leak, this time with both its front and back sides entering the spotlight.

Vietnamese Twitter user V? Th?nh (@nvthanh1994) snapped three photos of what he claims is the BlackBerry A10, code named "Aristo."

The BlackBerry Z10 successor is rumored to pack a 5-inch 720p Super AMOLED display, a 1.7GHz dual-core processor and discrete GPU. It's also said to have eight and 2-megapixel cameras, 16GB of storage, LTE, NFC, microSD, a 2,800 mAh battery and BlackBerry 10.2.

Wow, we actually have a lot on this device, don't we?

Those specs might not exactly make the BlackBerry A10 a Galaxy S4 or HTC One killer, but it should nevertheless prove the most powerful BB10 phone yet.

Home for the holidays

The BlackBerry A10 is expected to arrive in time for the holidays, possibly as early as November.

Today's leak seems to match the last one, which appeared earlier this month on BGR.

Shortly after that leak, a full A10 specs sheet for the expected BlackBerry hero leaked as well.

BlackBerry A10 back leak

Yet another A10 leak, also from Vietnam, appeared around the same time, this one a video.

The exact form factor of the A10 has yet to completely take shape, as few have held it in their hands, but we're certainly liking the look of it. Expect to see more and more of the A10 as the summer comes to a close.

Blip: LG G2 will be unveiled in New York on August 7

Blip: LG G2 will be unveiled in New York on August 7

We've long been gathering the hints and rumours about the LG G2, speculating on its unveiling, and now the company itself has said that the flagship device will be revealed at an event on August 7 in New York.

The smartphone manufacturer confirmed our predictions on its new dedicated LG G2 website, stating: "The LG G2, a phone inspired by you, unveils itself on August 7, 2013."

With a widget counting down to the "unveiling", it states that the event will be streamed live on the website.

The site also has a couple of promo videos to check out, though they don't feature much of the actual handset - just giving us a clear shot of its back, allowing us to see the camera and the volume buttons uniquely placed below it, surrounding the flash.

The website and video also says that the handset is "learning from you". We really aren't sure what to make of that, but with the powerful Snapdragon 800 sitting inside the handset, the possibilities have us excited.

More blips!

There's still a fortnight left, so why not check out some other TechRadar's blips in the meantime.

A friend of mine dropped her iPhone from about 3' onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered, rendering the phone unusable.

I'm certain the iPhone can withstand decent falls, but it may be a matter of luck-- if it hits at the wrong angle, it definitely can go kablooey.

On to your question:

First, how did you pay for your iPhone? Lots of credit cards offer purchase protection in case of theft, accidental destruction, etc. You may not need any more protection than you already have.

As for extended warranties/protection plans, these are almost never a good investment. If you like the peace of mind they bring, understand that you're paying for peace of mind, not protecting an investment.

Consider the SquareTrade offer you cited. If you bought a $600 iphone, you're paying $110 for 3 years of protection. With the $50 deductible you'll "save" $550 if your iphone meets the same fate as my friend's tomorrow. If your iphone dies in 18 months, you may be able to replace it for less than would have spent on SquareTrade's protection plan.

For this to make financial sense, you need to have a very high probability of destroying your iphone. How many portable electronics do you typically break in a year?
