The iphone is remarkably durable, considering how elegant it feels in your hand. But as others have commented, it really depends where an iphone is dropped that determines whether or not you end up with a $600 brick.

In my case, the *one* time I took my iPhone out of the Incase case I bought for it (which as bkeene correctly described, is a piece of crap, but definitely protects it against droppage), it accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on its back glass side up. A few minutes later, I noticed my WiFi signal get gradually weaker, and in about 5 minutes, the phone was completely bricked--no wifi signal, no EDGE and the phone actually popped up an error message saying, in essence, that my phone is in fact, bricked and could no longer make calls. This from a modest fall of around 12 inches above a ceramic tiled floor.

Thankfully there was no visible damage to the unit, so I took it into my local Genius Bar, played dumb (often referring to my self-hacked WRT54 wireless router as "my wireless thingy"), and recieved a new replacement unit a few days later.

It absolutely freaks me out to think what would happen if the glass broke or something. After the first year of ownership, Applecare is worth buying for laptops and ipods, but it really sucks that they don't protect you against accidental damage, considering how much they charge you for Applecare. So I'm on the "iPhone insurance is worth it" side of the fence.

USAA, my renter's insurance provider, covers accidental loss or damage to personal property, and specifically computer gear. YMMV with your provider.

I had a incase rubber case on mine for a few weeks here, and it provided good drop protection, but, the problem was getting it in and out of my pockets, stretched the rubber out, and now it is unusable. it also has a problem where dust gets into it, and will scratch the bevel around the screen.

Right now, I am rocking just a screen protector ( can't even notice it is there, and I like the extra insurance it provides).

The rubber incase is really nice though, and I have a buddy that got one after I did, and his is still really nice ( not stretched out).

In Depth: Is it time to say goodbye to the text message?

In Depth: Is it time to say goodbye to the text message?

"Merry Christmas," a short but simple message from Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis heralded the start of mobile messaging 21 years ago.

That first text has led to the rise of mobile messaging and the decline in using a phone to call people. But before people begin to wonder what an SMS (Short Message Service) ever was, we're here to guide you through history of texting.

Mobile messaging now comes in many forms with the humble SMS format joined by MMS, email, IM (Instant Messaging) and via myriad different social media sites. It has become the central hub of the modern smartphone, with email and IM apps now populating every app store.

Could Papworth have predicted the revolution that "Merry Christmas" would start? Could Friedhelm Hillebrand foresee that his choice to limit messages to 160 characters would still prove enough to change history?

In the beginning

Back in 1992 that first text message had to be sent from a PC, carried by the Vodafone network to an Orbitel 901, a device that Jarvis was unable to reply from as the mobile phone had no method of inputting text.

We use the term mobile pretty loosely, as the Orbitel 901 has no resemblance to any modern portable device. It was massive device with a corded handset and whopping antenna.

Orbitel 901

Design wise, it was miles behind the $3000 Motorola MicroTAC, a handset that was leading the way with its sleek clamshell design. The Orbitel had a trick up its oversized sleeves, coming with digital GSM technology.

At the start of the switch from analogue mobile signals, digital technology created the need for larger batteries leading to the handbag-style design of the Orbitel.

Nokia comes a-knocking

Messaging still had to be done through PCs until Nokia decided in 1993 that text messages should be sent by mobile devices, namely the Nokia 1011.

The Nokia 1011 signified a massive change in mobile design, coming in the candybar design that we are now all familiar with. It measured in at a sizeable 192 x 60 x 45mm, weighing a whopping 475g (that's 6g heavier than the iPad Air).

Nokia 1011

You also had to be careful with your typing, as it wasn't until 10 December 1995 that T9 predictive text was created. At this time the average American was sending 0.4 texts a month, equating to just five texts a year.

Compare that to five years later, and American's were averaging 35 texts a month, or 2008 when the average number of texts had increased to a whopping 357 per month.

Part of this rise was the development of full keyboard phones, the first of which was built by Nokia. Nokia beat the BlackBerry 850 to the punch, with its portrait flip phone the Nokia 9000i Communicator in 1997.

The Text Message: Merry Christmas to global revolutionary

Despite being a flip device, it weighed 78g less than Nokia 1011 (yet still three times that of the Samsung Galaxy S4), at 397g. Inside was a 24MHz processor and 8MB of memory, and the 9000i Communicator was also able to send and receive emails.

Going cross network

With messaging becoming more prevalent on devices, it may surprise you that it wasn't until 1999 that messages could be sent between operators.

This meant early adopters had to make sure their partner, friends or colleagues were on the same network if they wanted to avoid an actual voice conversation.

Initially cross network SMS communications commanded a much higher price, and back in 2008 it cost 2p per text to a handset on the same network, or 10p to rival carrier.

The UK surpassed a billion text messages per month in 2001, but its power was rapidly growing - text messaging was instrumental in everything from organising protests to disseminating information from disasters quickly.

Meeting MMS

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) was soon developed and the technology was first deployed in March 2002 by Norwegian network Telenor.

Unfortunately problems, such as image format or non delivery, meant that in 2004 all European networks with MMS services admitted it wasn't making money - although it still pervades today.

Nokia 7650

By 2007, text messaging had become more popular than making phone calls in the US, with Americans averaging 218 texts to 213 phone calls in December. Nielsen reported that the disparity had grown to 357 versus 204 in 2008.

The numbers, predictably, continued to spiral out of control as mobile phone use exploded: The Mobile Data Association reporting that 56.9 billion SMS messages were sent in 2007, rising to 96.8 billion by 2009.

Is this the end?

However, July 2009 saw the launch of messaging app WhatsApp - which was seen as a massive blow to text messaging.

Messaging was free, allowing you to send text via a data (be it 3G or Wi-Fi) connection. By the end of 2009, 1 million people were already using WhatsApp.

Over 1 billion messages were handled by WhatsApp in October 2011, perhaps contributing to falling numbers in SMS sent on Christmas day.

That year Finland, Hong Kong, Spain and the Netherlands all reported that fewer messages were sent.

The Text Message: Merry Christmas to global revolutionary

According to Nielsen the same age group that originally drove the love for the text is now pushing the popularity of mobile messaging apps like SnapChat - teenagers.

It isn't all bad news for text messaging though. Reports suggest that it has generated over $585 billion globally, with forecasts of a further $1 trillion over the next seven years.

This might be in no small part down to Fred Lidgren, a guy with the world record for text messages sent in a month.

Mr Lidgren managed to send 566,607 texts, equation to 18,887 a day, 787 per hour or 13 texts per minute.

Are we ready to say goodbye to the text message?

Andrew Acklin and Deepak Sharma held the record previously, with 200,052 and 182,689 sent and received messages respectively.

What next?

With the rise of mobile messaging giants WhatsApp, Kik, Facebook and SnapChat, just how much longer will we all be sending texts?

The rise of mobile technologies such as 4G and easily accessible Wi-Fi may lead to more messages sent via data connections rather than standard networks.

The future is clearly going to be all about IM, but that doesn't mean the humble text is a goner. The short character formation is universal across handsets and can easily send information without needing to worry about whether another person has the right app installed.

The number of texts sent in the UK will fall again this year... but it will still reach 140 billion. Sure, IM now still shoves out over 300 billion missives, but that's across a number of platforms.

Until one service overtakes all the others to become the champion way of communicating, we'll still be texting for years to come.

  • For now it seems that text messaging is safe, but just how much longer will we all be sending text messages, how about in 2030?

Sneaky seller lists Samsung's early Tizen phone on eBay

Sneaky seller lists Samsung's early Tizen phone on eBay

Samsung hasn't even announced its first Tizen phone yet but already someone is trying to sell it. The handset, which recent rumours suggest might be called 'Zeke' / 'Zeq', was listed on eBay for the not unreasonable price of $300 (181.64), with the heading "New Tizen Samsung SM-Z9005 smartphone for apps development."

Samsung Tizen phone

The listing, spotted over on GforGames came with a couple of images, giving as a closer look at the front and inside of the phone and the front image in particular is very reminiscent of a leaked photo that appeared only the other day, though this time it has a protective bumper around it, suggesting that it really is a developer unit.

Inching closer

Other than the images, the listing also revealed that the handset comes with 16GB of storage and has a 4.7 inch display, which slightly contradicts previous rumours that it would have a 4.8 inch screen.

We doubt that this is the full version of the phone, as it's unlikely Samsung would have let one wriggle out of its grasp this close to launch, but it's interesting to see that the brand is going after the same market segment as its popular Galaxy S range.

Tizen

Either way, we're starting to get a clearer picture of Samsung's first Tizen handset and with MWC 2014 just around the corner the missing pieces of the puzzle are likely to slot into place soon.

In Depth: Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

In Depth: Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Not long after launching the impressive Samsung Galaxy S4 flagship, the Korean firm followed it up with its baby brother, the Galaxy S4 Mini. Both are impressive handsets in their own right, but how do you know which is best for you?

Power-hungry consumers will probably be tempted to go for the Galaxy S4, not least for the all round superior specs, whilst thrifty users may opt for the S4 Mini based entirely on the cheaper price.

But that's a very black and white outlook; price and specs only paint half the picture. In a bid to help colour in the rest, here's our guide to picking the right handset for you.

Design

It shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini follow the same design frame, with the S4 Mini coming in as the smaller model. It's almost as if Willy Wonka has tried to beam the Galaxy S4 to our TV set via the airwaves.

Both devices follow the typical curved 'inspired by nature' look taken from the Samsung Galaxy S3, with the home button sitting at the base of both between the menu and back buttons.

The big design difference is undoubtedly their respective sizes. The Galaxy S4 comes with a 5-inch screen, popped into a chassis measuring 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9mm and weighing 130g. The S4 Mini comes with a smaller screen wrapped in a 124.6 x 6.3 x 8.9mm-sized body and comes in at just 107g, making it feel a lot less wieldy in the hand when you hold both side by side.

S4 vs S4 mini

This lack of weight will likely be heavily linked to the traditional plastic build of the Galaxy range. We've commented that the plastic feel on previous Galaxy flagships makes them appear a little cheaper than their high end rivals.

The problem is somewhat reduced on the S4 Mini as the plastic is more befitting the midrange price tag.

First impressions when picking up either of the Galaxy's is just how light they are. We often comment how added heft can lend a more premium feel, but both feel well-balanced in the hand.

That larger frame does mean that the full fat Galaxy S4 will sit more awkwardly in the appendages of smaller beings; the Galaxy S4 Mini is also far easier to operate one handed.

S4 vs S4 mini

The Galaxy S4 does also come with a feature that we are becoming increasingly attached to; a notification light. Given our near surgical attachment to our devices, having a little light that flashes means we no longer need to keep checking the S4, and that's sadly missing on the S4 mini.

In short, both the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini are well designed, attractive handsets (as long as you don't hanker after a metal body).

The plastic construction is more suited to the Mini, although it makes the S4 deceptively light. Add that to its immense thinness and we can see both sitting happily in the pocket of a pair of skinny jeans.

Screen

Without turning the screen on, the only noticeable difference is the added screen real estate that the Galaxy S4 offers. The extra 0.7-inches mean that the S4 screen towers over that of its Mini brethren.

Samsung's smaller model is far more akin size wise to Apple's iPhones. Since 2012, the Cupertino firm's handsets have sported 4-inch screens; those jumping from an Apple device may find themselves more accustomed to the S4 Mini.

S4 vs S4 mini

As we mentioned earlier, the added space of the flagship does mean that the Galaxy S4 sits slightly more awkwardly when trying to use one handed, or in the palms of a smaller individual. Teens will definitely find it easier to type on the Galaxy S4 Mini.

The smaller size does make it slightly more difficult for those with larger fingers to operate though, with bigger digits being far more suited to the Galaxy S4.

Size is not the only differentiating factor between the two screens; the resolution is likely to play a very important part in a decision in which version of the S4 you opt for.

Both handsets come with Samsung's Super AMOLED display, although the S4 comes with a Full HD 1080 x 1920 resolution. This gives it a whopping 441ppi, dwarfing the qHD 540 x 960, 256ppi S4 Mini.

However, thanks to both using similar screen technology (Super AMOLED screens for rich contrast and colours) the sharpness disparity is dulled somewhat, making both decent to look at - although movie watchers will prefer the S4.

S4 vs S4 mini

For those just looking to invest in a device with communication as the priority, the Galaxy S4 Mini is more than up to the task. The screen is bright enough and clear enough to send texts and emails, as well as for internet browsing.

The extra screen space and resolution is far more important for those looking to do heavy web browsing and large movie collections. Whilst the Galaxy S4 Mini screen is more than up to most tasks, bouncing between the two does highlight the effect of the lower resolution for these tasks.

Video calling is also more pleasant on the Galaxy S4 than the S4 Mini because of the screen. Contacts shouldn't notice much difference given the minor difference in camera size (2MP vs 1.9MP), but you'll be able to see much more of your loved one's face on the S4.

A few other neat tricks have been added to the Galaxy S4 screen too, with the ability to swipe between screens without touching it, as well as being able to operate the S4 with a pair of gloves on. In colder climates, the Galaxy S4 may be more appropriate for those without touchscreen-friendly gloves.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Camera

In a simple camera specs race, the Galaxy S4 was always going to win hands down. It comes equipped with a 13MP sensor as opposed to the 8MP sensor that graces the S4 Mini. Both come equipped with the same LED flash however.

Samsung has also put a few more of its fancy camera modes found on the Galaxy Camera into the S4.

S4 vs S4 mini

The Drama mode, Animated photo and Eraser modes are all missing from the Mini, with the Galaxy S4 also gaining the dubious 'picture in picture' mode. If you're looking for a phone that can put the photographer in the same snap as the subject, the S4 is definitely the one for you.

S4 vs S4 mini

In terms of forward facing camera's, the difference is far more subtle. The Galaxy S4 comes equipped with a 2MP sensor, with the S4 Mini coming with a 1.9MP sensor, so video calling should be a similar experience.

As a pure point and shoot device, both the Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S4 Mini are up to the task, but side by side it is immediately obvious which handset takes the better pictures. The added mega pixels in the Galaxy S4 really do make a difference.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Both images are clear, but extra detail on the goose's feathers is easy to see, and the detail on the surface of the water is also more prominent. The detail on the tarmac at the bottom is also clearer.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Colours appear much richer on the Galaxy S4, with the contrast levels much higher. The grass in the background is less faded, and the orange and blue on the life ring are a lot deeper.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

In lower light areas, both the Galaxy S4 and S4 Mini seem to struggle a little. The Galaxy S4 manages to pick up more detail though, and the edges of the trees are a lot crisper against the sky.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Both pictures are decent in HDR mode, although the Galaxy S4 Mini gains a warmer tone indoors. Smaller details on the fronts of cars are clearer, and the wheel spokes are also crisper on the S4.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Performance

The Galaxy S4 was always going to win on pure performance statistics too, with the quad-core 1.9GHz CPU and 2GB RAM blitzing past the 1.7GHz dual-core and 1.5GB RAM found within the S4 Mini.

In general usage though, the Galaxy S4 Mini doesn't appear to suffer. We found that whilst swiping between home screens, both handsets performed well. Opening the same apps gave little difference in loading times.

S4 vs S4 mini

Web browsing was also equally quick, and both handsets come with LTE variants so mobile browsing speeds should be the same.

Power users planning on downloading a lot of graphically-heavy games will find that the extra grunt behind the Galaxy S4 will prove invaluable, as the dual-core did suffer a little. The inclusion of Android 4.3 also makes the S4 OpenGL:ES 3.0 compatible.

Storage

With that massive screen to play with, you'd hope that the Galaxy S4 would come with sufficient storage to allow you to play all those HD movies. Thankfully Samsung has you covered, offering the Galaxy S4 in 16, 32 and 64GB models.

These all eclipse the 8GB memory found inside the Galaxy S4 Mini.

S4 vs S4 mini

Samsung does also allow the storage to be boosted by up to 64GB of microSD space in both, which means the S4 has a top end of 128GB capacity, with the Mini topping out at 72GB.

It's worth remembering that both phones have a decent amount of space taken up by the OS, so in reality you're getting just under 9GB of space from the S4 (16GB) and only 5GB of usable storage from the S4 Mini out of the box .

Those just looking to store a few albums to listen to on the morning commute will find that the Galaxy S4 Mini is more than sufficient - but be warned that both may start to show warning messages if you download loads of apps (with the Mini hitting the barrier more quickly in our tests).

Price

Price will also be a massive player in which one you choose. Those looking for a full on flagship will need to pay high-end prices, with the Galaxy S4 being seen on contracts from 31pm and SIM free for 400-470.

The Galaxy S4 Mini works out about 30% cheaper, seen for around 21pm and even better value as a one off cost, ranging from 265-380 SIM free.

Both handsets offer a decent trade off in specs and price, with the Galaxy S4 Mini offering a lot of features of the S4 at a more wallet friendly price.

With that in mind, the larger Full HD screen, the upgraded quad-core processor and the additional storage have to be worth it for you to justify the premium.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Extras

Is there anything else that you get for your money with the Galaxy S4 then? Both handsets come with Dropbox, offering 50GB of added space. Group Play is also available on both S4 variants, allowing easy streaming of content in your own little Samsung network.

The biggest app that is missing off of the Galaxy S4 Mini is S Health. This is an app designed to help you keep to your New Year's resolutions and keep track of your fitness. It does this by keeping track of your work outs, as well as keeping track of your daily calorie intake.

S4 vs S4 mini

  • Did you know that the Galaxy Gear is now compatible with both the Galaxy S4 and S4 Mini?

The Galaxy S4 also come with the innovative Air View and Air gestures features, allowing users to control the S4 without laying their fingers on the screen. We're particularly fond of Air View as it allows you to see expanded content, commenting it is a 'godsend' in the calendar app.

The Galaxy S4 Mini does come with one extra over that was strangely omitted from its bigger brother. Samsung saw fit to exclude an FM radio app for the Galaxy S4, but thankfully has included it on the S4 Mini. This will help boost the smaller storage, as users won't have to rely upon saved tunes or data allowances to get an aural fix.

Samsung Galaxy S4 vs Galaxy S4 Mini: Which is right for you?

Verdict

The Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S4 Mini are both very accomplished devices, each packing in a raft of features that make buying one a pleasurable experience.

S4 mini

To be clear, if you're put looking for a flagship handset, the Galaxy S4 Mini will always disappoint. The smaller and lower resolution screen will invariably prove to be a issue, especially if you are planning on watching a large amount of videos or love constantly browsing the internet.

Add in a better quad core processor, more storage and a strong camera, and you can see why the S4 is the flagship device, but this is reflected in the price.

With a lower cost the Galaxy S4 is a viable alternative for those that don't plan on watching a lot of videos or playing graphically intensive games, but would rather own a device competent in sending messages and playing Angry Birds on the morning commute.

But both devices are excellent - so if it's simply a case of working out which phone fits best in your hand, and either option should give more than enough reason to not make you regret the purchase.

The seemingly innocent herb, Rosemary, has come under close scrutiny recently, because it is now being used by an increasing number of dog food manufacturers as a natural preservative. HTC may take another swipe at Moto G with octa-core smartphone

HTC may take another swipe at Moto G with octa-core smartphone

HTC might be on the verge of launching the refresh to its five star HTC One handset, but that doesn't mean it has forgotten its other customers (you know, those who can't afford 500) as it looks to take on the budget market with a new Desire model.

Suggestions that HTC is planning on launching a new budget model first surfaced last week, and today more details have emerged giving us a rather colourful taste of what is on offer.

Chinese site ePrice has been passed pictures apparently showing a new HTC handset in a variety of colours (red, orange, blue and yellow), leaving it to take to take on the incredible budget Moto G handset.

Cheap and cheerful?

Colourful HTC Desire tipped for MWC

The new handset is expected to include a 5-inch 720p HD screen with an 8MP camera, leaving the UltraPixel technologies to remain on the high end HTC One range.

The upcoming Desire will apparently run Sense 5.5 over the top of Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, leaving it lagging behind the KitKat toting Moto G.

The leak also suggests that a MediaTek octa-core processor and 1.5GB RAM will also come inside the upcoming budget handset, retailing at 2000 Yuan (around 200, $330, AU$380).

While we can't vouch for the authenticity of the shots - so take the report with a decent pinch of salt - we may be looking at an MWC 2014 launch for this handset.

Rebounding Mac, plummeting iPod highlight winning Apple quarter

Continued strong iPhone and iPad sales, surprisingly good Mac sales, and a rising Chinese market gave Apple a very healthy start to its 2014 fiscal year.

According to an earnings report released Monday, Apple wrapped up the first quarter with a $13.1 billion profit on $57.6 billion in revenue. That compares to $13.1 billion in profit on $54.5 billion in revenue the same quarter last year. (To be precise, overall profits were in fact down just a bit, from $13.078 billion in the first quarter of 2013 to $13.072 billion this quarter.) Earnings per share were better than expected: Analysts had predicted $14.09 per diluted share, when in fact earnings per share were up 5 percent to $14.50.

Apple gobbled up the most chips in 2013 -- is that bad?

Apple outspent Samsung on semiconductor purchases by more than $8 billion in 2013, as it snapped up more chips than any other company in the technology business.

According to IHS Technology, Apple spent $30.3 billion on semiconductors alone in 2013, compared to the $22.8 billion that Samsung spent for components. Hewlett-Packard, Lenovo, and Dell rounded out the top five.

Why is this important? Not only does it demonstrate the relative complexity and cost of the components that end up in Apple?s devices, but it also indicates the importance of what analysts call a vertically integrated model: Samsung?s number does not include components that it ?bought? from other Samsung divisions inside the Korean giant. On those components, such as flash memory, for example, Samsung could avoid paying for the profit margin for those suppliers, IHS noted. (Granted, Apple has racked up billions in profits with products that specifically avoid the low-end market.)

Nokia's mysterious Android phone could launch as Nokia X

The much rumoured Nokia Normandy Android smartphone may in fact be called the Nokia X if and when it's officially unveiled.

That's according to a tweet by the often reliable @evleaks, which said simply "Project Normandy = Nokia X".

If the Nokia X does manage to break cover we could be looking at a 4-inch display, a Qualcomm S4 processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a 3MP camera according to a source which spoke to The Verge.

Nokia's Normandy handset has been popping up with alarming regularity lately and its very existence is a little puzzling given the Microsoft sale.

But we've seen so much of it now that there's little doubt it exists and if the Nokia X is ever going to see the light of day it will likely do so during Nokia's press event at MWC 2014 next month. Though given those specs it's unlikely to be a show stealer.

Updated: Qualcomm picks up Palm, truck-load of other mobile patents from HP

Updated: Qualcomm picks up Palm, truck-load of other mobile patents from HP

Update: A Qualcomm spokesperson sent over the following rather lengthy statement in response to TechRadar's queries. She clarified some points, explaining more about what these patents cover and what Qualcomm plans to do with them:

"The acquisition further enhances the strength and diversity of our industry-leading mobile patent portfolio and will enable the company to offer even more value to current and future licensees. The patents and patent applications acquired by Qualcomm in this transaction cover many different aspects and features of mobile operating systems (such as rejecting an incoming call with a text and using location as a trigger for reminders), as well as several other technologies used in mobile products such as smartphones and tablets.

"The technologies covered by these patents complement the technologies covered by Qualcomm's existing patents, which include, for example technologies related to cellular and other wireless transmissions of voice and data, semiconductor design technologies, display technologies, and wireless charging technologies in addition to mobile operating system technologies.

"The purchase of these patents signals Qualcomm's commitment to its partners to remain at the forefront of wireless technology in our licensing business as well as our product businesses. Patent acquisitions such as this, along with Qualcomm's continued investment of a large percentage of its revenue in R&D, enable Qualcomm to provide additional value to its licensing customers over time. In addition, Qualcomm generates several billion dollars in annual product sales. We are not and have no plans to become a 'non-practicing entity.'"

Original story below?

Qualcomm has purchased a large batch of patents from HP, raising a number of questions for one company while seemingly wiping the hands for another.

In a press release, the companies said the sale was aimed to "further enhance the strength and diversity of Qualcomm's Incorporated's industry-leading mobile patent portfolio."

The portfolio includes roughly 2,400 granted patents and pending applications related to HP's Palm, IPAQ and Bitfone technologies. Most of those - 1,400 - are from the US, while 1,000 are from other countries.

However, they didn't spill the beans on how much Qualcomm paid for the IP.

Big plans, maybe

The announcement says most of these patents cover technologies like "fundamental mobile operating system techniques."

There are no clues as to what Qualcomm plans to do with these patents, besides the press release's vague promise that they "will enable the company to offer even more value to current and future licensees."

Qualcomm has been riding high in recent years, as its Snapdragon brand processors are powering top smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy S4, the HTC One and many others.

HP meanwhile has done its darndest to wash itself of Palm. The company sold its operating system, webOS, to LG early last year. There's no word on how Qualcomm's purchase will affect LG's webOS-based Smart TVs, if at all.

According to Recode.net, HP will retain licensing rights to the patents.

We've asked Qualcomm to elaborate on its plans for this portfolio and will update this article if we hear back.

  • In the meantime, check out TechRadar's list of the best tablets available now!

The Mac at 30: Tales from the Berkeley Mac Users Group

Before the Genius Bar and before Apple?s own online forums, when the Mac was young and its users needed help, there were user groups: Part social clubs and part volunteer tech-support staffs, they disseminated tips, troubleshooting advice, news, and arguments about the Mac. They distributed loads of early Mac shareware and became important stops for vendors promoting new Mac products (including one Steve Jobs when he was trying to get Next Computer off the ground).

And in that early Mac age, no user group was bigger or more important than the Berkeley Macintosh Users Group, known to all as BMUG. Founded in 1986 and lasting for 14 contentious years, it at one point reportedly boasted more than 13,000 users, with satellite groups in Boston and Japan. While the original group formally dissolved in 2000, a smaller group (BMUGWest) still meets. And so, to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Mac, Macworld joined the group for dinner after one of its meetings and asked a few of the more senior members to look back over their three decades with the Mac.

Reinventing the Potato - Fantastically Flavorful Potato Recipes

Potatoes, while not the most flavorful on their own when raw, are the most favorite vegetables of many people. The potato is not the most nutritional vegetable (especially when fried), but they are cheap and filling. However, after years of french fries, mashed potatoes, and baked potatoes they start to lose their appeal a little bit. The potato is bland by nature and after so long of using the same seasonings, that blandness begins anew. Instead of just slopping down that same old lump of mashed potatoes tonight, try instead reinventing them into a flavorful dish with these recipes.

Updated: MWC 2014: what to expect

Updated: MWC 2014: what to expect

Think the world can't possibly accommodate any more smartphones? You think wrong.

Despite the fact that our planet currently contains more unique designs of mobile phone than there are visually identifiable snowflake forms, we're about to be hit by a deluge of new mobiles. Make a date in your diary for February 24, 2014, when the plastic-formers and die-casters of the world will unleash their next-generation models at Mobile World Congress 2014.

This year non other than Mark Zuckerberg will grace the stage a MWC 2014, highlighting the show's importance even further - possibly pushing it above CES.

MWC is the annual mobile tech event where pretty much every major phone hardware company shows off its new flagship models for the following spring/summer contract renewal market.

MWC 2014 no-shows

There have been a few exceptions, though. Samsung opted to demonstrate its Galaxy S4 at a separate event in 2013, while Sony tried to get a head start on the competition by unveiling its Xperia Z at January's CES tech show last year instead.

The MWC 2013 event was all about larger displays and quad-core hardware. This year will be about even bigger displays and, as we've already seen from the LG G Flex and Samsung Galaxy Round, there may be some interesting new tech on display in the form of bendable screens and yet more takes on the emerging smartwatch trend.

All of the major manufacturers featured below are down to attend (with the exception of Apple) and, thanks to the recent Big Bag explosion of Android, previously modest handset makers like ZTE and Huawei look set to make the most noise with rafts of cheaper phones that still deliver a decent experience.

Nokia at MWC 2014

Windows Phone has had a pretty triumphant few months, with Microsoft's partnership with Nokia finally bearing fruit and WP's market share slowly increasing. IDC's recent numbers put it at 3.6% (Q3 2013), compared to 2% in Q3 2012 - a healthy 156% increase.

Windows Phone 8.1

People seem to be remembering that they used to like Nokia, and although the company has released the likes of the Lumia 1520 and Lumia 2520 tablet in recent weeks, there may be more to come. Recently, the Lumia 1820 and Lumia 2020 have been rumored, with the latter likely to be a new flagship 8-inch tablet.

The big news however is the mystery around the Nokia Normandy (aka Nokia X) handset - a smartphone apparently running a heavily skinned version of Android which would see the Finnish firm stepping away from its Windows Phone-or-bust rule.

We should also see the first hardware set to launch with the Windows Phone 8.1 Blue software pre-loaded at MWC 2014, an OS update that's expected to massively overhaul WP's notification system, boost the multitasking options and incorporate a voice-based personal assistant feature. Because everyone's got to have a Siri function, even if no one ever uses it.

Samsung at MWC 2014

Rumor has it that Samsung is again saving its Galaxy S5 announcement for a separate event, just like it did last year with the bizarre Galaxy S4 launch in New York - although there are some who are still holding out hope. But that doesn't mean its booth will be any less heaving with new stuff

Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung has jumped the MWC 2014 gun by announcing the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 Lite ahead of show, although Barcelona will probably be the first time we're able to get hands on with the slate.

The Korean firm has also confirmed the existence of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo (rumored as the Galaxy Note 3 Lite) - and we expect to see this for the first time at MWC as well.

Another smartphone on our radar is the Galaxy Grand Neo - a mid-range handset with lower specs than the rumored Galaxy Grand 2.

We saw several Samsung tablets arrive at CES 2014, but there's still talk of a 13.3-inch monster slate with Android and Windows dual-boot abilities like the Ativ Q, as well as a range of Android only devices.

Samsung looks set to go big on its in-house mobile platform Tizen - finally - at MWC 2014, with reports revealing invites have been sent out for a Tizen-only event at the show.

There's also the chance of something extremely random like the Galaxy Gear 2 or perhaps even a hint of a 20-inch tablet turning up on the Samsung booth.

Whatever happens, it looks like Samsung's stall is going to be a busy one at MWC 2014, and we can't wait!

HTC at MWC 2014

HTC used to be Mobile World Congress banker, using the event to launch its newest models. In 2012 it gave us the HTC One X and One S, but in 2013 even HTC turned its back on the Barcelona show, launching its flagship HTC One ahead of time.

HTC One

In 2014 we expect HTC to launch a new flagship, thought to be currently going under the development name of HTC M8, which rumors suggest will be a device with a 5-inch 1080p display, quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor and Android 4.4 as its launch OS beneath an updated HTC Sense 6.0 user interface.

This sounds rather like... most phones nowadays. Still, if HTC can whack in the same sort of top-drawer speakers and camera as the HTC One, we'll be buying it and eBaying last year's model, as ever.

Will we see it launch at MWC? We're not so sure, as the Taiwanese firm looks to be mirroring the likes of Apple and Samsung with its own standalone event.

LG at MWC 2014

LG is back on the smartphone A-list thanks to its successes with the excellent Nexus 4 and the more than adequate Nexus 5, both of which have encouraged people to consider its own-brand efforts like the LG G2 more than they perhaps might have done before Google salvaged its reputation.

LG G2

Last year LG revealed the Optimus G Pro and the updated affordable L series range at MWC 2013, so we expect a similar mixture of a high-end banger and a few cheaper hangers-on to appear in 2014.

There's word that the LG G3 flagship will be held back until later this year, but the LG G2 Pro - a phablet version of the G2 - appears to be on the cards for MWC 2014, complete with fringerprint scanner.

There are a few key LG rumors that may be resolved at MWC 2014 (or sooner). LG is said to be Google's hardware partner for an updated Nexus 10 tablet, plus it's also recently registered the trademark "Glasstic" -- which may be some sort of Google Glass competitor.

We're also hearing from various places that the Korean firm is lining up a LG G2 mini handset to take on the likes of the S4 mini and One mini, so we'll certainly be keeping our eyes peeled for that.

Sony at MWC 2014

With the Xperia Z1 only just launched, we wouldn't forgive Sony for taking it easy and just bringing along a couple of those for people to play on and some t-shirts to give away. Surely it can't be preparing to release another flagship smartphone already.

Sony Xperia Z1

However, with the Xperia Z1 Compact making its way out the door at CES 2014, the coast is now clear for a new flagship, and word is that the Sony Xperia Z2 will be booking its flight to Barcelona as we speak, complete with a refreshed user interface.

Google at MWC 2014

Google is on the list of MWC 2014 exhibitors, although it's likely to spend most of its time and square footage pushing the general Android ethos and giving away stickers than actually revealing any new Nexus hardware.

That said, we're expecting a new Nexus 10 to appear any day now, so if that one doesn't pop before Christmas, perhaps it could be saved as an MWC headline-stealer to detract from the stacks of enhanced tablets that Samsung is bound to show up with.

There's also some suggestions of an 8-inch Nexus 8 tablet sneaking out at MWC, with an Intel chop inside.

ZTE at MWC 2014

ZTE polarized phone fans at MWC 2013, revealing the flashy 5.7-inch Grand Memo and the weird little ZTE Open, running the Firefox OS.

ZTE Grand Memo

It's recently announced the small and affordable Nubia Z5S and Z5S mini models, but rumors suggest it has a secret higher tier on the way - a 6.44-inch ZTE Nubia Z7 could be its forthcoming "phablet" flagship and the one it wants to shout about at MWC 2014

Samsung isn't the only manufacturer linked to a Tizen device either, with the ZTE Geek device appearing on the Tizen website listing for its presence at MWC.

ZTE is also said to be planning a smartwatch for release in 2014, but then so is everyone, so that's hardly news.

Huawei at MWC 2014

The Chinese phone maker is rumored to be preparing an update to the decent Huawei Ascend P6 and is, rather unsurprisingly, sticking the fashionable letter "S" on the end of the model name to signify that it's newer and better.

The Ascend P6S is said to arrive running a full octa-core processor supplied by MediaTek, which ought to get the core enthusiasts happy.

Panasonic at MWC 2014

We last saw Panasonic at MWC back in 2012, where it was flaunting the Eluga and Eluga Power. Unfortunately neither handset really made a splash and led to Panasonic pulling out of the mobile game in 2013.

It may not be gone for long though, as there's new reports suggesting it's working on a new rugged smartphone. Watch this space.
