Google's vice president of engineering Linus Upson has told TechRadar that the company is categorically not working on a Chrome OS tablet, but does expect a slow convergence with the Android mobile operating system.
In a briefing to introduce the new Chrome devices from Samsung and a revised Chrome OS, Upson told TechRadar; "We are not working on a Chrome OS tablet."
"We have our hands full in delivering a wonderful experience on dektop and laptop and the Android team have their hands full bringing a great experience on phone and tablet. But the two teams are working together even more closely."
Upson believes that there will be a slow convergence between Google's two operating systems, but believes Microsoft's earlier attempts to run over multiple platforms and Apple's success with Mac OS and iOS indicate that different devices still need a different OS.
"The use cases in technology stacks on phone and tablet are very different to desktop and laptop, as are the user expectations, and the types of things you do are also very different," said Upson.
"That's why everyone has two different solutions for these problems. Apple has Mac OS and iOS, Microsoft has two ? they just happen to call them both Windows ? and at Google we do the same.
"But I think everyone does expect you will see more and more convergence and bringing together of [the two projects] so you can get the best of both.
"Microsoft demonstrated quite convincingly earlier this century that if you take one environment and jam it across all devices it wasn't going to work so now you see a lot more caution.
"Apple doesn't try to smash the two together and we're not trying to do it, but in time there will be a seamless user experience across all the devices."
Upson believes that this convergence has already begun in earnest, with Chrome on Android phones bringing some of the functionality of Chrome OS.
"New phones have got to the point where we can run all of Chrome which wasn't possible before ARM chips got faster and faster," he said.
"So we are able to bring the full Chrome experience to phone or tablet and you see this with Microsoft and Apple devices as well.
"With Chrome on Android and Chrome OS and Chrome on Windows or on Mac you get the same web browsing experience everywhere.
"?So we're seeing convergence slowly over time and doing the right thing for users.
"Everyone likes to call a horse race [between Android and Chrome OS] but we don't look at it like that at all. We look at what's the right thing to do for the user and how you build the right experience."

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has gone on sale today in 28 countries, however anyone who is looking to get their hands on the pebble blue model could be sorely disappointed.
According to various reports and industry insiders, the pebble blue version of Samsung's latest flagship device is suffering delays due to manufacturing issues.
This has resulted in there being considerably less blue versions available on launch day, with most customers having to settle for the white clad Galaxy S3 for the time being - although there may be a day or so delay with this version too!
Update: TechRadar spoke to Samsung who said: "Samsung's GALAXY S III Pebble Blue version comes with a newly invented blue colour and special hyperglaze material.
"In order to meet the highest internal quality standards and to provide the best quality GALAXY S III to customers, a short supply of Pebble Blue version is expected in some regions in the next 2-3 weeks.
"Samsung is working hard to ensure that customers will get the Pebble Blue coloured devices as soon as possible."
This news will bring disappointment to those who were organised and got in early to pre-order the blue Samsung Galaxy S3, as many of them look set to miss out ? with a wait of possibly two to four weeks ahead of them.
There's no clear word on when the pebble blue stock will arrive, or what pre-ordered customers will face, but for anyone who was trying to decide between a Galaxy S3 or HTC One X, the latter may have just got an extra boost.
We have contacted UK suppliers and networks to see if we can find out when the pebble blue version may make it to our shores, and we'll update this article once we hear back.
Update: O2 has said: "The Samsung Galaxy S3 is the most pre-ordered Android phone in O2's history and we want to give everyone who has pre-ordered the best possible experience.
"Samsung has said there is a worldwide shortage of blue Samsung Galaxy S3s so they will be available in extremely limited numbers. The white version will be available from all O2 channels on 30 May."
Update: A T-Mobile spokesperson also confirmed the delay: "We can confirm we have received stock of the white variant of the handset and expect to be able to fulfil all the pre-orders we've received for this device at launch.
"However, we've been advised by the manufacturer of a shipping delay on the pebble blue version.
"Although we expect to receive stock shortly, we are contacting customers who have pre-ordered this colour to let them know that there may be a slight delay, and to reassure them we will look to fulfil their order as swiftly as possible."

Wondering what Samsung was going to do with its acquisition of mSpot? Here's your answer: taking on Apple's services.
The new Music Hub, which will initially be available on the Samsung Galaxy S3 before moving onto other devices, will come in two flavours, allowing users to access new music and mess around with their own.
The free version of the service, which will come preloaded on the S3, allows you to do the same things as on the Music Hub from the Galaxy S2, namely downloading music from 7digital.
All music nabbed from that portal will be stored in the cloud and is available on all (presumably Samsung) devices you happen to be signed into.
But stretch your fiscal wings a little more and you'll get a whole heap of new services; for ?9.99 a month (about 8 / $12.50, but exact prices to be confirmed) you'll get access to unlimited streaming from 'millions of songs in the Music Hub'.
You'll also be able to upload your music collection to the cloud to be accessed wherever you are ? but don't worry, there's very little uploading as Music Hub will scan your collection and match songs to play back in high quality.
We're assuming the similarity to any service Apple has created is entirely coincidental here.
And of course if that bootleg dubstep remix of some cat banging into a lamppost isn't on Music Hub, then the song will be uploaded for you ? with a very generous 100GB of storage on offer, way more than the 5GB on offer from the service when it was just mSpot.
Other fun bits? You can get recommendations on songs, albums, artists and radio stations, with the more you listen, the more the Hub will know you. Know your very soul.
You can also check out all this stuff online through musichub.com if you've signed up already via a Galaxy S3, allowing you easy access to your tunes.
Samsung only purchased mSpot earlier this month, so the speed of integration is impressive ? the company also offers movies in the same way, so fingers crossed we'll be seeing the same option on our Samsung Galaxy S3 soon too.

Despite skepticism from competitors, Verizon Wireless announced that a total of 36 entities expressed interest in purchasing 700MHz spectrum bands from the company.
Verizon offered up A and B block spectrum in the 700MHz range as a good faith sale to convince the FCC to approve the company's proposed purchase of unused AWS spectrum from cable companies.
Verizon Wireless also announced that 36 unnamed entities signed non-disclosure agreements to receive more information concerning the deal.
As part of the deal with cable companies, Verizon proposes to partner with the likes of Comcast and Time Warner to offer consumer packages that include cable, internet, digital phone and mobile phone service all in one.
But critics of Verizon's proposal say it's a threat to competition.
Verizon purchased the A, B and C blocks of the 700MHz band in 2008 for $9.4 billion, and they used the C-block to launch the beginnings of their 4G LTE network for smartphones.
The AWS band Verizon is attempting to purchase from cable companies is currently not being used, although Verizon's competitors have claimed that it's some of the last AWS spectrum available anywhere.
Granting it to Verizon, T-Mobile senior VP Tom Sugrue told the FCC in April, would be a waste of valuable AWS spectrum, since Verizon isn't using the AWS spectrum they already have.
The FCC regulates such deals closely since spectrum bands are limited and should be used in a way that benefits the public.
As a show of good faith, Verizon offered up the 700MHz A and B blocks for sale, although Sugrue said last month that those bands are practically useless due to commercial interference and a lack of compatible devices.
T-Mobile and Verizon's other competitors aren't the only ones who are concerned about the deal.
The Senate's antitrust subcommittee chairman Sen. Herb Kohl wrote the following to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski:
"In brief, without reaching any final judgment as to the legality of these transactions under the antitrust laws or Communications Act, I believe these transactions present serious competition concerns which should be examined closely by your agencies."
Verizon defended the proposal, saying "the Lower 700MHz A and B bands are not as good a complement to our existing spectrum holdings as is the AWS spectrum," implying that the two are comparable assets, though many disagree on that point.

Details have leaked out about another possible Sony handset known as the ST26i, but don't get too excited.
Sony has already released a pretty impressive trio of phones this year, the Xperia S, Xperia U and Xperia P, but it looks set to expand its range in the coming months.
Spotted by Blog of Mobile, benchmark results for a new Sony handset have appeared on GL Benchmark, revealing details about the ST26i.
According to the results the ST26i will pack a less than inspiring 800Mhz processor (but it could be clocked to 1GHz), 480x854 display and Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich.
These are similar specifications to the ones quoted with another leaked handset, the Sony ST21i, which we reported in April.
Obviously there's no confirmation from Sony on the validity of either handset, but it's good to see the company taking its solo return to the market seriously.

Research in Motion plans to lay-off over 2,000 staff this Friday, according to reports in the company's Canadian homeland.
The Globe and Mail says the Waterloo, Ontario-based company will make the cuts on June 1 as it struggles to cope with quarterly losses and diminished demand for BlackBerry smartphones.
With around 16,500 employees worldwide, the cutbacks would represent around 12 per cent of its total workforce and would echo the 2,000 jobs it shed last summer.
The job cull "will sweep across departments, ranging from senior positions in RIM's legal division to human resources, finance, sales, and marketing," according to the report.
The ailing smartphone giant has also seen a dramatic shake-up at the top in recent months, with co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis stepping aside and Thorsten Heins taking over.
There has also been several high profile executive departures as the reality of the company's current plight has set in.
RIM is placing its faith in handsets running the forthcoming BlackBerry 10 operating system, which it hopes will halt the iPhone and Android-induced slide into smartphone obscurity.
RIM is yet to comment on the story.

Questions are being raised over the future of BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) as reports suggest Research in Motion (RIM) is focussing its efforts elsewhere.
We don't need to tell you that RIM has had a torrid time over the past couple of years, with network outages, riot-inducing allegations and declining sales seeing its BlackBerry range lose out to the likes of Apple and Android.
Now the Wall Street Journal reports that sources familiar with the situation at RIM have revealed: "BBM is taking a back seat to chief executive Thorsten Heins' focus on pushing out the company's new phone and operating system later this year."
BBM now has a host of competition in the mobile instant messaging world, with Apple's iMessage for iPhones, Samsung's ChatOn service and third-party, multi-platform Whatsapp all vying for a spot on your smartphone.
According to the sources, RIM was planning to licence the BBM platform (codenamed SMS 2.0) to other manufacturers and carriers, theoretically allowing it to run on iPhones and Android devices, but this initiative was stopped by Tim Cook when he took control of the company.
BBM is certainly far from dead and buried, with RIM recently launching the BlackBerry Curve 9320 which sports a dedicated button for the messaging service, but it looks like the core focus is now on the BB10 software and handsets which will be running it.

HTC is about to roll out its One XL handset to parts of Europe as it looks to cash in on the 4G market.
According to Vodafone Germany, the One XL will be available from early June, and KnowYourMobile reports that it should make it to the UK soon after.
TechRadar contacted HTC UK, who said "The HTC One XL is a 4G LTE device which we expect will roll out to markets where 4G is supported, but there is no word on it coming to the UK."
The One XL, currently available in the US under the AT&T One X moniker, is a variant of the popular HTC One X, but it does come with a couple of key differences.
The One XL will pack 4G LTE capabilities, allowing users to take advantage of the super fast 4G networks, unlike the One X which only supports 3G.
To compensate for the additional network boost the One XL has lost the quad-core Tegra 3 processor, instead having to make do with Qualcomm's dual-core S4 Snapdragon chip, which is found in the HTC One S.
Although on paper the One XL has the lesser processor, reports suggest the Snapdragon chip runs cooler, faster and more efficiently than the Tegra 3, meaning extended battery life on the handset.
If you're tempted to nab one for yourself in the UK then you will be able to purchase a One XL directly from HTC for ?659 (around 530).

Today, TechRadar can exclusively reveal a lost Samsung Galaxy S3 advert, dating all the way back to 1985.
Although almost 30 years old, the Galaxy S3 has managed to stay under-wraps for the better part of three decades, with rumours about its arrival only beginning to leak six months ago.
Tucked away under our Mobile Devices Editor's desk, hidden in a dusty VHS Back to the Future box, the video cassette housing this historic piece of film depicts the Samsung Galaxy S3 going head to head with the iPhone 4S, in what can only be described as an epic He-Man vs Skeletor esque battle.
No one knows how it got there, no one knows who put it there, but step aside Airwolf, pipe down Super Ted and jog on A-Team ? for the '80s has a new hero?
If you desperately need to return to reality after that, then head over to our full, in-depth Samsung Galaxy S3 review to get the low down on the biggest phone of 2012 so far.

Sony made a decision to cancel their plans to upgrade their Xperia Play gaming smartphone to Android 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich.
The reason: all the negative feedback from carriers, developers and owners of the Android 4.0 test build.
According to a Sony statement, the decision was made "after extensive in house testing with developer teams" and "working with partners."
"We have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich."
Sony initially planned on pushing out the upgrade between late May and the beginning of June.
ICS beta ROMs for unlocked Xperia PLAY devices were given the opportunity to test the OS prior to its official upgrade launch.
This, however, resulted in some serious issues among owners.
The most notable problem Sony took issue with was that the gaming stability of the device was compromised, which just won't due for the electronics company.
"We look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY," continued the statement.
Sony went on to explain:
"In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich - therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.
"This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.
"Our priority has and always will be, to provide the best possible user experience on Xperia smartphones. In this instance the ICS upgrade would have compromised stability, where we look to ensure a quality gaming experience with games optimized and developed for Xperia PLAY"
On the brightside, the following Sony devices will receive the Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade:

Google is now the proud owner of Motorola as CEO Larry Page announces that the long-running deal has closed.
The deal, worth around $12.5 billion (about 8 billion), has been rumbling along since August 2011 and has finally got the seal of approval from all parties.
China was the last country to give the green light just days ago, with the caveat that Android must stay 'free and open'.
Writing on the official Google Blog, Page explained that Motorola CEO and early Android supporter Sanjay Jha has stepped down, with "long-time Googler" Dennis Woodside taking his place.
With that out of the way, it was time to wax lyrical about technology for a while:
"It's a well known fact that people tend to overestimate the impact technology will have in the short term, but underestimate its significance in the longer term," wrote Page.
"Many users coming online today may never use a desktop machine, and the impact of that transition will be profound - as will the ability to just tap and pay with your phone.
"That's why it's a great time to be in the mobile business, and why I'm confident Dennis and the team at Motorola will be creating the next generation of mobile devices that will improve lives for years to come."

Sprint confirmed that the HTC Evo 4G LTE has successfully passed customs and may be available soon.
A Sprint representative told TechRadar that customers who pre-ordered the HTC Evo 4G LTE can expect to receive their handsets as early as May 24.
"Sprint expects to begin shipping HTC Evo 4G LTE for arrival on or around Thursday, May 24 to customers who pre-ordered the device online from Sprint," Sprint told TechRadar.
However, Sprint would not comment on when customers can expect to see the Android smartphone on store shelves, simply saying that details of a national launch will be announced "as soon as possible."
The HTC Evo 4G LTE had a troubled launch with a delay as U.S. customs investigated claims that both it and the HTC One X infringed on Apple's patents.
The patent in question is regarding how the smartphone interprets phone numbers and email addresses from emails, websites, and various text, resulting in users able to simply tap on a number or address to dial or send an email.
Yesterday, HTC confirmed that some handset models had begun to pass through customs, though it was still unclear which models and in what quantities.
The matter of quantity is still unknown, but the number of devices getting through is apparently enough for Sprint to be confident it can fulfill its online pre-orders in the near future.
While Sprint's comments allow for some leeway with its May 24 date, the date being confirmed by the company so soon after HTC devices began passing through customs is a good sign that the Evo4G LTE's launch ordeal may finally be drawing to a close.

Activision could be adding to the UK games-making scene with a new studio dedicated to mobile game development.
Likely to be sat up in the north of England, Activision's new studio hasn't been officially announced yet, but sneaky games newshounds have discovered that Martyn Brown is heading up the recruitment drive.
Worms aficionados will remember Brown as being the man behind Team17 which developed Worms and it's his expertise in addictive video game creation that Activision is no doubt hoping to bottle at the mobile game creation unit.
"We are investing in mobile initiatives and that includes a UK studio," said Activision's spokesperson, although it refused to elaborate on where, when or how.
However, Develop understands that developers at various Northern studios have met with Brown so it's likely to be oop thar rather than down in the saaarf. As they say.
Activision began moving away from UK-based games development after the coalition government put the kibosh on tax breaks for the gaming industry, but in March this year the government changed its mind and announced that tax relief for the "brilliant" games industry would be available after all.
