Calls for no limits to unlimited phone data offers

Calls for no limits to unlimited phone data offers

Phone companies are being asked to make sure their 'unlimited' data deals are in fact unlimited and not confuse consumers with a fair-usage policy.

According to the Guardian, Lewis Shand Smith, an ombudsman that specialises in communications, has called for policies to be made clearer to consumers and has asked that companies stop hiding behind the small print when they advertise their deals.

"This is an emerging problem which we think could cause real consumer detriment ? we want mobile phone companies to take action before it becomes more prevalent," said Shand Smith.

"Some mobile phone packages offer 'unlimited' downloads and consumers may believe that their mobile phone bill won't go above a certain amount.

"Consumers may fail to realise is that there is a small asterisk next to the word 'unlimited' which refers to small print stating that there is in fact a limit which, if exceeded, will incur further charges."

Bundle of fun

In light of Shand Smith's quotes, mobile phone company Three contacted TechRadar and said: "Three's all-you-can-eat data plans offer customers genuinely unlimited internet use on their smartphones and no out of bundle data bill shock.

"Smartphone users typically sign up for two-year contracts and use increasing amounts of data as they learn just what their smartphone can do, making limited bundles an issue for many consumers.

"Both contract and pay as you go customers tell us they prefer the peace of mind of all-you-can-eat data to fair use policies or worse still: out of bundle data bill shock.

"Consumers want to make the most out of their smartphones but many struggle to track their data use, our genuine all-you-can-eat plans take that problem away."

The ASA currently allows the word 'unlimited' in advertising as long as the customer is clear there are limits.

Where's 2 Unlimited when you need them?

Android snaps up 52% of mobile phone market

Android snaps up 52% of mobile phone market

Google has reason to celebrate this week, with a recent study showing that Android, its mobile phone operation system, has now take 52 per cent of the smartphone market.

This percentage is even more impressive when you consider that Android only had 25.3 per cent market share in Q3 2010.

According to Gartner this means that when it comes to worldwide sales, Android trounced the opposition with over 60 million smartphones sold.

Its nearest rival was Symbian, which took 16.9 per cent of the market ? a drop of 20 per cent when you compare the OS to how it was doing at the same time last year.

When it comes to iOS, it also saw a drop in its share of the market, albeit a small one. Over 17 million iOS handsets were sold which equates to a 15 per cent market share, down from 16.6 per cent a year ago.

Apple shouldn't be too worried about this drop, however, as it is said to have happened because consumers were waiting for the iPhone 4S to arrive before making a purchase decision.

RIM should start worrying though, as it lost over 4 per cent of its share and is now down to just 11 per cent, the reason that is cited is that the company has fallen out of favour with the US market.

Suffering from delay

Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said about the results: "Apple's iOS market share suffered from delayed purchases as consumers waited for the new iPhone.

"Continued pressure is impacting RIM's performance, and its smartphone share reached its lowest point so far in the US market, where it dropped to 10 per cent."

Next year's results should be even more interesting as we will see how much of an impact Microsoft's Windows Phone OS will have on market share.

This week sees the launch of the Nokia Lumia 800, the flagship phone for the OS so far, and this is a long line of releases that will make use of Microsoft's refreshed and well-received mobile operating system.

Nokia Lumia 900 outed in new promo video

Nokia Lumia 900 outed in new promo video

Nokia has unveiled a new promo video for its Windows Phone line-up and in the process outed what's likely to be the Nokia Lumia 900.

The smartphone in the promo looks a touch different from the Nokia Lumia 800, which was released in the UK this week, with the device's edges are more curved and the screen looks like it is bigger too ? at around 4.3 inches.

4G phone

Other than that there's not too much new to report but the look of the phone certainly resembles the specs that were leaked for the Nokia Ace.

The full specs which came to TechRadar back in October include: a 4.3-inch Clear Black Display AMOLED screen, an 1800mAh battery, Carl Zeiss 8MP camera. It should also come with HSPA+, which means it could well be 4G.

Interestingly the promo video is very similar to the one that was used to show off the Nokia Lumia 800.

Given that this is the case, it could well mean that we see the Nokia Lumia 900 UK release date as soon as early 2012.

Given that Nokia has played the numbers game with its Windows Phones so far, we don't think it will be coming with the Nokia Ace moniker ? it will much more likely be called the Nokia Lumia 900.

Intel in talks with HP over Palm sell-off

Intel in talks with HP over Palm sell-off

HP is in discussions with Intel to buy off the company's Palm assets ? the most important of which is WebOS.

In a week where HP's financial numbers revealed that WebOS, the acquisition of Palm and the running costs to produce the HP TouchPad had hit $3.3 billion, it is thought that Intel is the latest to be interested in buying WebOS.

The sheer amount of cash that HP has put into its OS and tablet venture, however, does mean that when it does eventually sell off its WebOS assets it will make a massive loss.

Licence to print

While Palm is looking to sell off WebOS, one of its prerequisites for the deal seems to be that it still wants to have a WebOS licence for its printer range.

We're not sure why this would be a stumbling block for a company that is eager to rid itself of software that is losing the company money on a daily basis, but VentureBeat believes this is a major factor in the talks taking place.

2011 will be a year HP wants to forget. In August the company announced it was ending production of WebOS hardware, less than 18 months after it had bought Palm and that it was thinking of pulling out of the PC market completely.

By October, the company had a new CEO in place and had confirmed it was keeping the PC business but remained set on selling WebOS.

Likely

Nokia Lumia 800 goes on sale in UK

Nokia Lumia 800 goes on sale in UK

The Nokia Lumia 800 has gone on sale in the UK, bringing the latest Windows Phone 7 Mango OS and a huge burden of expectation.

The Nokia partnership with Microsoft represents a huge deal to both companies, and the hype around the Nokia Lumia 800 suggests that it will prove a popular handset.

brightcove : 1241720705001

The handset brings a 3.7-inch screen, a much-hyped design and some key Nokia apps that include Nokia Drive, turning the handset into a turn-by-turn sat nav.

Attractive

Also noteworthy are a 1.4GHz MSM8255 Snapdragon/Scorpion processor and a 16-bit AMOLED ClearBlack display.

TechRadar's Nokia Lumia 800 review suggests that the phone was a "very attractive device with a nice weight and when the on contract price is free, it's even better."

The phone is available from most of the normal phone channels, although the full range of colours does not yet appear to be available.

Amazon planning Kindle smartphone in 2012?

Amazon planning Kindle smartphone in 2012?

Amazon looks like it's not content with just having a shot at the e-reader and tablet market, with reports emanating from Asia that it wants a smartphone too.

According to CitiGroup, Amazon is looking to launch a smartphone in Q4 2012 in association with Foxconn International Holdings, and will aim it at the cheaper end of the market.

The research note states that the phone will cost Amazon $170 (107) and that the company may actually sell it for close to that amount, losing money but increasing the impact in the market.

"For a normal brand like HTC, they need to price the product at US$243 to make 30% gross margin. If Amazon is actually willing to lose some money on the device, the price gap could be even bigger," notes Kevin Chang of CitiGroup in Taipei.

Android ahoy

It looks likely the phone will be running Android, just like the Kindle Fire, as despite not explicitly mentioning Google's OS, stipulations of a payment to Microsoft being necessary hint strongly this will be the case.

The only question remains over why Amazon would actually want to release a smartphone; an e-reader and tablet make perfect sense, given the firm wants to use the devices as a platform to farm out its content.

But a smartphone would only really be useful for music and some tolerant movie fans - and it will need to be pretty special to be a hit at the end of next year.

We'll rate this rumour right down the middle - after Amazon's recent exploits, we wouldn't put it past the online giant to meddle in another market.

Quite likely

Google Music adds download store

Google Music adds download store

As expected Google has taken the wraps off the full version of its Google Music application, which now features a fully functional MP3 download store.

At an event in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, Google announced partnerships with EMI, Sony and Universal Music to provide the same high-quality 320KBps MP3s hosted by iTunes.

However, the fourth of the big four record labels, Warner Brothers, is conspicuous by its absence confirming rumours that Google had failed to lure all of the big players into agreements before launch.

However, Google Music will still give users access to 13 million songs that can be instantly downloaded to their Android device or Google TV.

On top of that, artists will have their own hubs where they can sell music and there's be a host of exclusive tracks and albums, like an unreleased Rolling Stones Live concert Google mentioned during the event.

However, as expected, UK users will have to wait to go hands on with the new-and-improved service.

Out of Beta

Google has also taken the opportunity to bring its original Google Music cloud storage offering out of Beta for the 1 million users already taking advantage of the service.

The storage option, which is now free to all, allows you to upload 20,000 songs to the cloud, which can be streamed to any of your connected devices.

Users have complained, however, that the uploading process takes an inordinate amount of time.

This portion of the service will rival Apple's $25 iTunes Match streaming facility, which simply scans your hard-drive and replaces tracks with high-quality offerings from iTunes.

Google+ integration

The other big news to come form Wednesday's launch was Google's plan to deeply integrate the Music service into its fledgling Google+ social network.

The company has said that users will be able to share albums and songs they have purchased with their Google+ Circles, who can then stream them completely free without making a purchase.

All of the action takes place on your Google+ profile page and is similar to Facebook's tie-in with Spotify which allows users to recommend songs to pals.

Google has already updated its Google Music Android app and is also rolling-out an update to the Android Market itself to include a Music tab to sit alongside Apps, Books and Movies.

This is unlikely to immediately roll-out in the UK as Google will need to negotiate deals with the British arms of the major record labels, but we'll keep you updated.

My boyfriend has had his iphone since the first day they came out, and I've personally watched him drop it, carry it in his pocket everywhere, knocking it AND the dock off his bedside table across the room, and it looks immaculate. He doesn't have a cover or anything on it. I specifically commented to him the other day that I couldn't believe there wasn't a scratch or anything on the glass. The wonders of technology! Unless you plan on throwing it against concrete or something, a cover seems kinda of unnecessary. Plus it'll only detract from the iphone's coolness. :)

HTC Quattro release date set for March 2012?

HTC Quattro release date set for March 2012?

HTC's quad-core tablet, codenamed the HTC Quattro, won't be making its dent in our bank accounts until March 2012, according to Digitimes.

And that's the very earliest that the souped-up 10.1-inch tablet will arrive, according to Digitimes' supply-chain sources, with Beats Audio, DropBox integration, 1GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, 3G, and a 2MP camera all on board.

Quite fancy a pizza now

While the Quattro has the quad-core tablets tied up for HTC, there's a bit more action on the smartphone side of things.

We've already heard about the HTC Edge which promises plenty of grunt from its Tegra 3 processor, but the HTC Zeta is a newer one ? promising a Qualcomm 2.5GHz quad-core CPU rather than the Nvidia-made Tegra 3.

Also on board the HTC Zeta will be a 4.5-inch display, 8MP camera, HTC Sense 4.0 and the now-obligatory Beats Audio integration, according to the occasionally correct Digitimes.

Other reports on the Zeta promise Ice Cream Sandwich, 32GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.0 and a snazzy sleek design (pictured).

Despite the HTC Quattro's rumoured March release date, we won't be at all surprised to see it unveiled at February's Mobile World Congress 2012 ? and we'll be crossing our fingers for a Zeta, Ville and Edge unveil then too.

But the Quattro to hit the shelevs in March? We can believe it.

Quite likely

Growth in smartphone and tablet buying is set to cool in 2012, with the CEA ? the people behind CES ? predicting a big fall in popularity for the devices.

2011 was a massive year for tablets, with Steve Koenig, director and industry analyst at the CEA, noting that there was 207 per cent growth in the buying of tablets in 2011.

In 2012, however, this number has been slashed to 59 per cent. When it comes to smartphones, growth is set to drop from 63 per cent to 22 per cent.

One of the reasons for this could well be the explosion of apps on the market, meaning that consumers are personalising their devices with applications and because of this not looking for an upgrade.

The CEA is reporting that apps will be ones of the biggest things at CES 2012, which is a significant move away from what is usually a hardware-focused technology trade show.

Customisable experience

"[The abbreviation] CE doesn't just represent consumer electronics but customisable experience," said Koenig.

"We may have the same smartphone and tablet but we have different apps to make them our own.

"We will see this trend at CES; there is a lot of homogeneity in the mobile market.

"The biggest thing for manufacturers is how they differentiate their product. They should be looking at the content aspect as much as the device itself."

Despite the drop in popularity mobile devices, the CEA is still seeing smartphones and tablets as hot products for CES 2012 and they will bolster a market that's set to hit $1 trillion in 2012, up from $961 billion in 2011.

"Our figures show how resilient our industry has been," said Koenig. "Global sales only dipped by 8 per cent in 2009 when we hit an economic crisis and came back up in 2010."

One of the factors for growth is to do with emerging markets ? when it comes to Europe, we seem to have flat-lined.

In 2012, we are set to only see one per cent of growth down from 7 per cent in 2011.

Thicker iPad 3 slated for 2012?

Thicker iPad 3 slated for 2012?

After years of paring our smartphones and tablets down to the thinnest possible dimensions, Apple could launching a thicker iPad 3 and a larger iPhone 5 in 2012.

The iPad 3 is bulking-out reportedly so it can house a higher-resolution display than the iPad 2 and the extra girth is all down to pixel density.

As we previously reported, the higher pixel-density that Apple is apparently insisting on is going to cause some brightness issues.

Another source previously claimed that the company will add dual LED light bars to counteract this, and this new rumour that the company is increasing the slate's thickness by 0.7mm could see that hold true.

Lite Brite

The iPad 3 release date should be around March some time (as usual), although the source reckons it "could be publicly shown as early as January". Presumably it will rock out the old 'I'm still carrying a bit of holiday weight' excuse if so.

Back to the iPhone 5, and it looks as though 8mm will be added to the handset's length in order to cater for a 4-inch screen. iLounge's source adds that it will rock a metal body unit and land in summer 2012.

That tear-drop design that we were expecting to see this October has apparently been done away with due to battery issues.

Also reportedly coming in 2012 is the MacBook Pro redesign, which should see the beefy laptops slimmed down in line with the MacBook Air range.

iLounge says this information comes from its "most reliable source" and fits fairly well with other Apple rumours that have refused to die; but we're not sure we can quite believe that Apple will deepen the iPad 3? the jury's out on this one.

Question: Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops?

I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

Updated: Google: Flash for Ice Cream Sandwich yet to be released

Updated: Google: Flash for Ice Cream Sandwich yet to be released

Update: Adobe has confirmed that it will indeed be releasing Flash Player for ICS.

It said in a statement sent to Pocket-Lint, "Adobe will release one more version of the Flash Player for mobile browsing, which will provide support for Android 4.0, and one more release of the Flash Linux Porting Kit -both expected to be released before the end of this year."

And that's your lot - after Android 4.0 support, there will be no more versions of Flash Player built by Adobe, although it will continue to offer "critical bug fixes and security updates".

Google has confirmed that Ice Cream Sandwich lacks Flash support and will continue to do so until Adobe makes the necessary updates to the software.

Despite Adobe deciding to axe Flash for mobile devices, the company is still expected to make the media-friendly format work for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, currently the only ICS phone around.

A Google spokesperson said, "Flash hasn't been released for ICS yet so as far as we know, Adobe will support Flash for ICS."

No flash in this pan

There's no mention of a timescale for the Flash release, however, but we'd imagine that Adobe is all over it, especially as we're anticipating a slew of ICS-toting devices to launch over the coming months.

The lack of Flash support didn't escape our attention during TechRadar's indepth Samsung Galaxy Nexus review.

At first it was upsetting to discover that we couldn't even download the plug-in from the Android Market ? but once we discovered the missing Flash compatibility didn't stop the web browsing experience on the handset being wonderful, we dried our eyes and got on with our lives.

A friend of mine dropped her iPhone from about 3' onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered, rendering the phone unusable.

I'm certain the iPhone can withstand decent falls, but it may be a matter of luck-- if it hits at the wrong angle, it definitely can go kablooey.

On to your question:

First, how did you pay for your iPhone? Lots of credit cards offer purchase protection in case of theft, accidental destruction, etc. You may not need any more protection than you already have.

As for extended warranties/protection plans, these are almost never a good investment. If you like the peace of mind they bring, understand that you're paying for peace of mind, not protecting an investment.

Consider the SquareTrade offer you cited. If you bought a $600 iphone, you're paying $110 for 3 years of protection. With the $50 deductible you'll "save" $550 if your iphone meets the same fate as my friend's tomorrow. If your iphone dies in 18 months, you may be able to replace it for less than would have spent on SquareTrade's protection plan.

For this to make financial sense, you need to have a very high probability of destroying your iphone. How many portable electronics do you typically break in a year?
