In Depth: Future PCs: less irritating, more desirable

In Depth: Future PCs: less irritating, more desirable

Interview: Intel's Genevieve Bell

When the CEO and the head of the PC group at Intel stop talking about processor speed and start talking about user experience and making technology people lust after, there's something going on.

One of the people behind Intel's new approach is Genevieve Bell, the cultural anthropologist who runs the Interaction Research Lab in Portland.

"We spend a lot of time settling with technology," she complains. "I wanted to ask what was really going to make us go 'I must have it!' Irrationally; must, must, must! What compels people to love phones?"

To answer that, her team spends time studying how people actually use technology, especially at home, and most recently in cars.

"It turns out that if you want to make the right decisions at a silicon level, you actually have to have a vision of where that silicon is used. You want to work out what people love and then you want to work out what are the technologies that will make that possible - or that will get in the way.

"Things that really piss people off turn out to be really instructive about what not to do."

You're not everyone

The irrepressible Australian once confronted Otellini about the way Intel was approaching the TV market. "He explained to me that no-one watched TV any more. And I was 'Excuse me, but I'm pretty sure everyone does. You read books instead; that's just stellar, but you're not everyone. In my professional opinion, you're neither normal nor average'."

Many products fail because technology companies that became successful building for people just like their engineers are now making something no-one working there will use.

"It's not just Intel; my colleagues at Microsoft, IBM, Google, Huawei all have the same problem. The gut instincts of decision makers, the ones that have served them so well up until now, turn out not to be the ones that scale for everyone.

"There was a time that what Intel made was PCs, laptops and servers and that was it. But the world of computing is infinitely more complicated now and our markets are bigger and the people who are buying the technology are like no-one in the building."

Otellini

OTELLINI: He didn't think that TV was that big

That's why Bell's team spends time watching people watch TV and, most recently, unpacking and photographing what people keep in their cars.

"About 40% of the cost of a new car is the electronics. And while car companies are increasingly building technology into cars, consumers just keep bringing more technology to the car. Car companies have a vision of 'connected cars' in much same ways tech companies have visions of technology. I thought, OK, let's see what people actually do."

Socially safe

Cars, it turns out, are rather like sheds. "Stuff goes into cars and never leaves them again. Something you imagine you might one day need ? like the dongle for a device you haven't had in three years."

We keep emergency supplies like flashlights or water and in many cultures, we also keep things in our cars to make sure we're not going to be embarrassed socially; spare greetings cards in the US, alcohol in Australia, lucky envelopes of money in Asia - and an A-Z in the UK. The same is true of phones.

"Phone numbers have people's faces and names attached, Facebook tells you birthdays. We spend a lot of time talking about privacy but we haven't spent much time thinking about how people use these devices to ensure the continuity of social relationships. It's not about protecting themselves, it's about protecting their relationships.

"That lets you think really differently about people categorise data. What are the ways people might think about privacy? What are the ways devices might need to talk to each other ? and what are the kinds of things you might not want devices to talk about?"

Devices talking might matter more than people talking. "Whatever the latest cool phone is, I can guarantee you it is not the easiest thing on which to make a call," Bell claims.

"They're much less about communications but you'll never be somewhere without something to do. If it is more about constant engagement, it has really different implications for what you design into the platform, what software you might want to embed in it and what it needs to know about you and what you're doing."

Her lab is working on that; "The stuff that will come out of Intel in the mobile space in the next couple of years has our fingerprints on."

Ultrabooks "empower people"

Not convinced Ultrabooks have a future when tablets are so popular? Bell calls herself "bullish" on Ultrabooks because "they are not just about Sandy Bridge - they are about empowering people to be creative." Yes, we want to consume content, but that's not all we want.

"For five years now, consumers have had this incredible panoply of devices on which they can consume content, of which the iPad and Kindle Fire and Kindle are just the latest examples. TV viewing is up 15-25% in the last ten years; we watch more television that we did ten years ago. These devices make it easier to consume content than anything else - but what we were starting to hear from consumers for a long time was this desire to also participate and make things and share things."

Intel ultrabooks

ULTRABOOKS: But will they sell in numbers?

Another Intel idea she believes people want is WiDi. "I have never done a household interview where someone didn't take me to a corner of the room and say 'You see this pile of wires? Can you get rid of them?'."

In the longer term, Bell is trying to reimagine security. "I'm really fascinated by what we trained people to do on laptops and that fact that is not going to expand to other devices.

"All the ways we talk about security come out of a very military and western view; we have a drawbridge, we have a gate, we repel the hordes. I was struck by things that people have in their cars to protect them that have nothing to do with repelling danger. They were all about attracting good fortune. What are the other stories we tell about security that might lead to different ways of thinking about it? What are the conceptual models?"

She also wants to make devices less demanding. "Years ago I interviewed a woman who thought the technology in her life was like a backpack of baby birds with their mouths open saying 'feed me, feed me, feed me!' They need to be plugged in, they want networks; they need to be taken care of. They're really demanding and also, it turns out, remarkably insecure. They lack self-confidence. 'Are you sure you want to delete that?' Yes, that's why I've asked you twice. 'Want to connect to that thing?' Yes, I always connect to it every morning. They're really high maintenance and there's only going to be more of them."

We just want to make things easier

She dismisses the usual predictions about the future of technology. "This notion of artificial intelligence; objects will get smarter and be able to engage with us in rational conversations. I don't want rational conversation! I just want it to stop asking me 'do you want to delete this'. The second is of course as soon as the machines get a little bit more self-confident they will kill us."

Assuming we avoid HAL 9000 and Skynet, we can make life easier for ourselves.

"We want to create a more balanced relationship where these devices become both more self-confident and less needy and start to be able to do some things on our behalf.

"It's perfectly possible to imagine - without it being too creepy a world - where it says 'Genevieve always has the same meeting at 10am every Monday and at 10am every Monday she always opens up the laptop and starts shopping for shoes; this 10am meeting is one we could interrupt with email. Now this 11 o'clock meeting she's never online, so we might want to hold stuff back'."

That means knowing what matters. "If you are on your computer and you're making a Skype call, chances are the call is the important thing. I should probably prioritise that and deprioritise other things. I should probably make sure if the network degrades I can hop you onto another network so long as I already have the password; I shouldn't have to ask you 'the network degraded, do you want a new one?' It should be clear that's the priority."

And that comes back to silicon as much as software, she points out. "There's some really interesting stuff you can do at that level to just rearrange everything, from hierarchies to memory caches, to priority calls on the hardware, that would let you operate machines that were a little more stable and a little more caretaking of you." Definitely better than Skynet?

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to AT&T on February 19

Samsung Galaxy Note coming to AT&T on February 19

The Samsung Galaxy Note device will launch in the US on the AT&T network on February 19, the carrier has announced.

The phone/tablet hybrid announced at IFA 2011 last September will cost $300 on a two-year contract.

The US version of the device brings 4G LTE connectivity along with the gorgeous 5.3-inch Super AMOLED (1280 x 800) display.

The Note arrives in stores on February 19, but eager beavers can have it delivered on the 17 by pre-ordering on the website, when that process begins on February 5.

Phone or tablet?

The 9.95mm-thin Samsung Galaxy Note was awarded four stars in a recent TechRadar review.

The display "blows the S2 out of the water" according to our reviewer, while the S Pen stylus brings some interesting new functionality to Samsung's range of phones and tablets.

Under the hood there's a 1.4GHz dual-core processor as well as up to 32GB of internal storage, so the specs are pretty tight.

The only problem for this undeniably gorgeous device, we found, was a bit of an identity crisis. Is it a phone or a tablet, or both? And who is it aimed at?

iPhone 5 rumours: iPhone 4S and new rumours

As it happened, there was no iPhone 5 after all, but the company did announce the iPhone 4S.

However, the iPhone 5 is still on the cards - we're expecting it to debut in mid-2012. You can check out the latest rumours about iPhone 5 below.

First though, why not read our complete iPhone 4S review?

Also check out our iPhone 4S video review:

brightcove : 1224629147001

Here are the new iPhone 5 rumours we've gathered together since the iPhone 4S launch

iPhone 5 release date

UPDATE: For the latest on the new iPhone 5's release date, check out our regularly updated article iPhone 5 release date.

Given the pattern of Apple's iPhone launches, we're expecting the next-gen iPhone 5 to debut in mid to late 2012. We reckon it's most likely to be shown off at Apple's Worldwide Developer Event (WWDC), which usually takes place in early June.

Rumours that we reported on 18 October claim an iPhone 5 release date of Summer 2012. Analyst Ashok Kumar claimed that the absent iPhone 5 was meant to be the big announcement at the recent event where the iPhone 4S was launched.

iPhone 5 form factor

Unlike the iPhone 4S, it'll be a completely new design from what has gone before, so that means an entirely new casing as we saw with the iPhone 3G and, later, the iPhone 4.

Interestingly, someone who claimed to have seen a larger-screened iPhone 5 prototype said in November 2011 that Steve Jobs canned the new handset and opted for the iPhone 4S because of the larger screen size of the new device. According to Business Insider, it was feared that a new size would create a two-tier iPhone ecosystem.

Beatweek also claimed in November 2011 that the 5-inch was scrapped "because Apple wouldn't be able to do it properly" this year. However, the Daily Mail (make of that what you will) then suggested that a four-inch version was likely and that Sony has already shipped top secret demo screens to Apple.

iPhone 5 specs

Based on the roadmap of mobile chip design specialist ARM (of which Apple is a licensee), we'll see a quad-core processor debut in the iPhone 5 - probably called the Apple A6. We know that we'll see other quad core handsets debut in 2012, so it's not too much of a stretch to say that the iPhone 5 will be the same.

iPhone 5 will have 4G/LTE support

With many 4G handsets already announced in the US, it can't be long before the iPhone supports 4G technologies - even if we won't even have a UK spectrum auction until 2012.

Cnet.com quotes Will Strauss from analyst firm Forward Concepts, who says that the next iPhone will feature LTE technologies."They're saving iPhone 5 for the LTE version and that won't be out until next spring," said Strauss.

Steve Jobs' iPhone 5 legacy

Many sites have reported that Steve Jobs was working hard on the iPhone 5 project, which will apparently be a "radical redesign". We shall see...

iPhone 5 rumours: old rumours

Below are the rumours that we reported on leading up to the iPhone 4S press conference.

iPhone 5 (or the iPhone 4S, as some are calling it) rumours have been flying thick and fast for months.

And now Apple has finally confirmed a press conference for Tuesday 4 October, where the company will almost certainly unveil the iPhone 5.

The invitation hints that it will be one phone that is announced, which is likely to be the iPhone 5 rather than the much-discussed iPhone 4S.

Check out what TechRadar is hoping makes it into the next iPhone, in our video wish list:

brightcove : 1027846751001

And if you're in a bit of a hurry, we've also got a handy iPhone 5 video detailing the latest rumours on release date, spec and more - so check if out for a quick fix of next-gen Apple fun:

brightcove : 1161523880001

Although we are still waiting for news on an iPhone 5 UK release date, we reckon an iPhone 5 release of late October is likely. It's possible that the iPhone 5 release date is November, but it's more likely set for October.

In mid September the CEO of France Telecom (the parent company of Orange) got specific when commenting on the iPhone 5 release date, saying "If we believe what we have been told, the iPhone 5 will be released on 15 October."

Price cuts of the iPhone 4 in August hinted at an autumn release for the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S and Apple reportedly began pushing up the amount of orders for the handset.

In early September, Japanese site Macotakara reported that the iPhone 5 had entered production, saying that Foxconn and Pegatron had begun assembly on the new handset. A few days later, Digitimes wrote that Foxconn was producing 150,000 units of the new iPhone per day.

Rumours of a UK Apple Store holiday ban also emerged on 26 September. It was also reported that Telefonica, which owns the O2 network, is set to begin scaling back iPhone stock in advance of "the launch of a new smartphone".

However, it may not all be plain sailing for Apple, with rumours that Samsung will seek a sales ban courtesy of an injunction - another piece of the increasingly mixed up lawsuit puzzle between the pair.

The iPhone 5 will debut alongside iOS 5 and iCloud

Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer was asked during an earnings call why he was suggesting a 12 per cent drop in revenues for the Q3 financial period - a traditionally robust time thanks to the scores of people buying the latest iPhone.

He said that there is "a lot going on in the fall with iOS 5 and iCloud" but added there will be a "future product transition that we will not talk about today".

That's almost certainly the new iPhone 5. And iOS 5 will arrive alongside it as well iCloud.

iOS 5

Apple says it is "cutting the cable" with iOS 5 - just as well, as it claimed the iPad 2 was the first post-PC device earlier in the year. OS updates can be delivered over the air - you'll just received what's changed rather than the usual 600MB download - and devices can be activated without plugging them into iTunes.

You can also now create and delete iOS calendars and mailboxes too, so you really can devolve your device from your PC or Mac.

"You can activate on the device and you're ready to go," explained Apple's Scott Forstall.

"Software updates are now over the air. So you no longer need to plug in to update your software. And they're now Delta updates. Instead of downloading the whole OS, you only download what's changed," he continued.

The Wall Street Journal has previously reported that: "Apple is also developing a new iPhone model, said people briefed on the phone. One person familiar said the fifth-generation iPhone would be a different form factor than those that are currently available? it was unclear how soon that version would be available to Verizon or other carriers."

This has since been backed up by reports from Engadget, which state the design will be a 'total rethink'.

Chinese case manufacturers have been sent design briefings of the new iPhone 5 chassis and apparently feature a return to the old days of iPhone design. But could iPhone 5 really have a curved back? We can't begin to tell you how sceptical we are over such a 'leak', given Apple's desperation to keep its forthcoming designs under wraps.

However, earlier reports from China backed up the larger-screened, metal chassis-sporting iPhone 5 rumours, so the redesign still seems firmly on the cards.

Interestingly, an Apple patent that we reported on on 7 April 2011 suggests that we could see the bezel put to good use on the new iPhone. The patent describes how visual indicators and touch-sensitive buttons could be incorporated to the space around the iPhone screen.

Will iPhone 5 actually be an iPhone 4S?

Of course, since the iPhone 3G was followed by the 3GS it's possible the new iPhone won't be a total refresh and we'll see an iPhone 4S (or iPhone 4GS) before an iPhone 5.

An iPhone 4S looked more likely on 16 May 2011 after analyst Peter Misek wrote: "According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support."

Rumours that we covered on 3 May 2011, suggest that there may even be two versions of the new iPhone: a 'standard' iPhone 5 and an iPhone 5 'pro'. Apparently, Apple is buying in components of differing quality, and those parts wouldn't be required for a single phone.

A white iPhone 5

The Economic Daily News is reporting that white iPhone 5 glass is being shipped, with a supplier called Wintek being the sole touch panel vendor for the white iPhone.

On 12 September 2011, a page which briefly popped up on Vodafone's site referenced the iPhone 5 in white as well as black.

iPhone 5 will support 1080p HD

It's fairly likely - given that the iPad 2 supports Full HD - that the new iPhone will do the same.

According to the Chinese Economic Daily News (via AppleInsider), with the exception of Qualcomm chipsets - which would replace the current Infineon chipsets in the iPhone 4 - Apple's sticking with the same suppliers for the 2011 iPhone 5G components.

We'd expect the basics of the iPhone 5 specs to get a bump - more memory, faster processor, and more storage. The A5 dual-core ARM processor from the iPad 2 is extremely likely to be included.

The specs? A new antenna, 1.2GHz processor (possibly dual-core) and a larger screen: 3.7" instead of 3.5". The iPhone 5 may also be made from a new kind of alloy, or maybe meat.

On 12 September 2011, a page briefly appeared on the Vodafone site referencing the iPhone 5 in 16GB and 32GB storage, and in white as well as black. Other sources expect double the RAM of the iPhone 4, so that would be 1GB instead of 512MB.

On 20 September a bunch of internal iPhone 5 components were supposedly shown off.

iPhone 5 screen

Various sources claim the iPhone 5 will feature a larger, 4-inch screen. Digitimes quotes the source as saying that Apple is expanding the screen size "to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market."

On 23 May, we reported on rumours that the iPhone 5 could feature a curved glass screen. These rumours also came from Digitimes, which said that Apple has purchased between 200 and 300 special glass cutting machines because they're too costly for the manufacturers to invest in.

The iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S will also get a massive graphical boost as it moves to a dual-core GPU - this will herald true 1080p output from the new device.

iPhone 5 digital wallet - NFC

There's been some speculation that Apple might include Near Field Communication (NFC) technology in the iPhone 5G, turning it into a kind of credit/debit card.

However, with the tech being inside the Google Nexus S, the time for NFC may finally be here.

On 24 June 2011 it was reported that the Google Wallet mobile payment platform could feature on the new iPhone. Eric Schmidt admitted that Google is looking to port the software to other manufacturers.

However, on 31 January 2012 9to5Mac claimed to have spoken with a well-connected developer who disclosed information received from Apple iOS engineers saying they are "heavily into NFC".

The developer in question has not been named, but is working on a dedicated iOS app which includes NFC reading for mobile transactions. When questioned how confident he was on the information he had received his reply was "Enough to bet the app development on".

iPhone 5 camera

Sony makes the camera for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Speaking at a live Wall Street Journal event, Sony's Sir Howard Stringer was talking about the company's camera image sensor facility in Sendai, a town that was recently ravaged by the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami.

According to 9to5Mac, he said something along the lines of, "Our best sensor technology is built in one of the [tsunami] affected factories. Those go to Apple for their iPhones? or iPads. Isn't that something? They buy our best sensors from us."

Sources have also suggested the new iPhone could have an 8MP camera. Indeed, Sony announced in January 2012 that it had developed new back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensors which are smaller in size.

iPhone 5 price

If the iPhone 5 is an evolutionary step like the move from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS then we'd expect the price to stay more or less the same, although in the UK higher VAT rates may well mean a higher price tag.

Jon Rubinstein leaves HP

Jon Rubinstein leaves HP

Jon Rubinstein, the former CEO of Palm and the man who spearheaded the development of the WebOS software, has left Hewlett-Packard.

Rubinstein joined HP when the company bought WebOS back in 2010 and has now completed his 12-24 month commitment to the company.

"I am going to take a well deserved break after four and a half years of developing webOS," Rubinstein told AllThings D.

HP followed up with a statement of its own: "Jon has fulfilled his commitment and we wish him well."

Pre-conceived ideas

After a term at Apple working on the iPod line, Rubinstein returned to prominence around the time Palm made a comeback with the Pre handset in 2008, which saw the debut of WebOS.

The Pre was not a success and the promising WebOS software failed to reach its potential under both Palm and HP's leadership.

Following the TouchPad tablet fiasco, HP decided to release WebOS to the open source.

Android Developers say bye to Menu button

Android Developers say bye to Menu button

Android Developers are being reminded by Google to shift their attention away from the Menu button and focus instead on the Action Bar.

The Menu button function is commonplace in pre-3.0 versions of Google's Android operating system. It allows users to view options for a particular application by pressing the Menu button on their device.

With the introduction of Honeycomb (version 3.0) and now Ice Cream Sandwich (version 4.0) the function has become redundant as these operating systems remove the need for physical buttons.

All change please

This year we expect to see a new wave of devices running Ice Cream Sandwich, so developers need to make sure they update their apps to use the Action Bar.

Developers need to follow the new Android user experience as many Android devices are expected in 2012 to feature button free designs.

Apps will continue to work on the new software, with Google building an action overflow button which acts as the menu button.

The action overflow button will display on all applications which have not been updated to Android 3.0+, even if they do not require it.

Are you all for button free devices, or will you be pining for your menu, home and back buttons?

A friend of mine dropped her iPhone from about 3' onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered, rendering the phone unusable.

I'm certain the iPhone can withstand decent falls, but it may be a matter of luck-- if it hits at the wrong angle, it definitely can go kablooey.

On to your question:

First, how did you pay for your iPhone? Lots of credit cards offer purchase protection in case of theft, accidental destruction, etc. You may not need any more protection than you already have.

As for extended warranties/protection plans, these are almost never a good investment. If you like the peace of mind they bring, understand that you're paying for peace of mind, not protecting an investment.

Consider the SquareTrade offer you cited. If you bought a $600 iphone, you're paying $110 for 3 years of protection. With the $50 deductible you'll "save" $550 if your iphone meets the same fate as my friend's tomorrow. If your iphone dies in 18 months, you may be able to replace it for less than would have spent on SquareTrade's protection plan.

For this to make financial sense, you need to have a very high probability of destroying your iphone. How many portable electronics do you typically break in a year?

The iphone is remarkably durable, considering how elegant it feels in your hand. But as others have commented, it really depends where an iphone is dropped that determines whether or not you end up with a $600 brick.

In my case, the *one* time I took my iPhone out of the Incase case I bought for it (which as bkeene correctly described, is a piece of crap, but definitely protects it against droppage), it accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on its back glass side up. A few minutes later, I noticed my WiFi signal get gradually weaker, and in about 5 minutes, the phone was completely bricked--no wifi signal, no EDGE and the phone actually popped up an error message saying, in essence, that my phone is in fact, bricked and could no longer make calls. This from a modest fall of around 12 inches above a ceramic tiled floor.

Thankfully there was no visible damage to the unit, so I took it into my local Genius Bar, played dumb (often referring to my self-hacked WRT54 wireless router as "my wireless thingy"), and recieved a new replacement unit a few days later.

It absolutely freaks me out to think what would happen if the glass broke or something. After the first year of ownership, Applecare is worth buying for laptops and ipods, but it really sucks that they don't protect you against accidental damage, considering how much they charge you for Applecare. So I'm on the "iPhone insurance is worth it" side of the fence.

USAA, my renter's insurance provider, covers accidental loss or damage to personal property, and specifically computer gear. YMMV with your provider.

IBM and HTC combine to bring Android to businesses

IBM and HTC combine to bring Android to businesses

IBM has teamed up with HTC to try and bring Android handsets to the business sector, which is currently dominated by Apple and Blackberry devices.

A series of smart business applications have been developed by IBM to run on HTC smartphones and tablets ? although theoretically they should be relatively easy to port to other devices if IBM eyes the bigger Android prize.

Targeting the enterprise market is a new direction for HTC, which has only recently begun to shift some focus to the area, as they look to grow and hit 100-million devices globally.

Make sure you take your tablets

Due to the iPad's huge success in the workplace as well as for sofa browsing, increased focus is being put on Android tablets by manufacturers and developers to gain a slice of the enterprise pie.

HTC will be looking at new Android tablet and smartphone devices, using its partnership with IBM to extend appeal to the business market.

HTC will allow businesses to create their own applications, with help from third party developers, for their HTC devices to compliment the range of business tools which will already appear on the devices.

This will provide a more personalised business experience and allow the tablet to be tailored to suit a company's needs. This level of customisation is something the iPad cannot offer and could see HTC succeed in the enterprise market.

We look forward to seeing what new tablets HTC produced and what the IBM applications offer up. Would you consider an Android phone or tablet for your business?

LG Optimus LTE hits one million sales

LG Optimus LTE hits one million sales

Apple may have sold over 37 million iPhones in the last quarter and perhaps the mark of just how successful that device has been is LG's gleeful reaction to sales of its Optimus LTE handset.

The 4G device has reached one million total sales since its launch in October 2011, prompting LG to issue a press release championing its success.

Over 600,000 of those sales came in LG's South Korean homeland, while the rest were shared between Canada, the US and Japan.

LG is excited that the 4.5-inch, 1.5 GHz dual-core Android device shipped 8,500 units on the first day of sales in the land of the rising sun.

Leadership in LTE

The company says that smashing through the one million barrier puts it "at the forefront of the emerging LTE era."

Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile said "With brisk sales for a high-end smartphone, the Optimus LTE reaffirms LG's leadership in mobile LTE technology.

"The combination of LTE connectivity with LG's True HD IPS display has resonated with the public regarding the potential of LTE technology."

Sales of the handset helped LG to an improved fourth quarter performance as it clings onto its status as the world's third largest cellphone manufacturer.

Did Apple want to include Lytro tech in iPhone camera?

Did Apple want to include Lytro tech in iPhone camera?

It has emerged that during his final months, Steve Jobs met with the founder of Lytro, to discuss the possibility of working with the company who produce a "light-field" camera to discuss a possible partnership.

The Lytro Light Field Camera works by capturing an entire field of light, meaning that users can take a picture and then choose a different focus point later.

It has been claimed in the upcoming book Inside Apple by Adam Lishinsky, that last summer, Steve Jobs met up with Ren Ng, the founder of Lytro, who demonstrated the technology and discussed cameras, product design and things Lytro would like to do with Apple.

Light fantastic

The on-board camera of the iPhone 4S was one of its headline features. It includes a wide-apertured 5 lens system for taking on board lots of light.

Including Lytro technology on a phone would make picture taking almost instant, since it wouldn't rely on the camera having to focus first.

Apple is of course notoriously secretive about its future plans, so it's nigh-on impossible to tell if this meeting will actually lead to something being adopted in future versions of the iPhone, but it seems that if it does, it would probably be yet another nail in the coffin for compact cameras.

That is, if another camera manufacturer doesn't attempt to buy up the tech first and implement it into its own devices.

Currently, Lytro tech is only available in its own range of cameras, but with limited controls.

My boyfriend has had his iphone since the first day they came out, and I've personally watched him drop it, carry it in his pocket everywhere, knocking it AND the dock off his bedside table across the room, and it looks immaculate. He doesn't have a cover or anything on it. I specifically commented to him the other day that I couldn't believe there wasn't a scratch or anything on the glass. The wonders of technology! Unless you plan on throwing it against concrete or something, a cover seems kinda of unnecessary. Plus it'll only detract from the iphone's coolness. :)

Nokia Lumia 900 set for June UK launch

Nokia Lumia 900 set for June UK launch

Nokia will launch the Lumia 900 smartphone in the UK in June, according to Carphone Warehouse.

The 4.3-inch Windows Phone Mango device was praised upon its debut at CES 2012, but until now has been billed as an AT&T exclusive in the United States.

The listing on Carphone Warehouse's website gives Nokia fans the opportunity to pre-register for the device, which is stamped with an "expected June 2012" icon.

Nokia is yet to reveal launch plans for its third Windows Phone handset outside of the United States agreement with AT&T.

Like the Lumia 900, only bigger

The Lumia 900 is essentially a larger version of the impressive Lumia 800 which debuted in the UK last November.

There is, however, the addition of a front-facing camera and a wide angle lens on the rear.

A June arrival would open the door for the device to arrive with the forthcoming Windows Phone "Apollo" update, although that's probably a long shot.

US users will have access to 4G LTE internet, but with next-generation broadband still a pipedream for us Brits there'll be little use for that 4G chip when the device lands in the UK.

I was constantly dropping phones, so I got a rubber case for my Blackberry from Speck. They make a similar product for the iPhone. I can vouch for its resilience.

HOWEVER, there are two serious caveats:

- Bulk and aesthetics. You've got a big, knobby piece of rubber on your lovely iPhone.

- It's rubber, so it can be sometimes frustrating to dig out of your pocket without turning the whole thing inside-out. And forget putting it into any slim-fitting clothes.

In the end, I ditched the case and forced myself to be more diligent. I now have no case and can't remember the last time I dropped it (*knock on wood*).

Google's Moto takeover to be decided on 13 Feb

Google's Moto takeover to be decided on 13 Feb

Google will learn on the 13 February whether its proposed move to takeover Motorola Mobility will be granted.

EU regulators have set the date after Google produced new documents to support its bid, following the EU Commission's request for further information about the deal on the 10 January.

Google is very keen for the $12.5 billion (8 billion) takeover to go through, as it includes over 17,000 patents, which will allow Google flex its muscles in the court room if (and when) other companies come a knocking.

Flexing the patent portfolio

Patent disputes came thick and fast during 2011 and we expect them to continue in 2012, as companies scramble to protect their property and ensure rivals are put on the back foot with the blocking of products, such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and royalty payments for patent usage agreements.

Other Android manufactures maybe feel uneasy about the deal, as Google could be seen as favouring Motorola handsets, but Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt has said that will not affect how Google operates Android.

We're still waiting to see a flagship tablet using the new Ice Cream Sandwich OS though, and the rumblings are that Google has gone with Motorola for the creation of such a device - is this the shape of things to come?

Research team developing smartphones that power themselves

Research team developing smartphones that power themselves

A team of researchers at the University of Cambridge, led by Professor Arokia Nathan are working to develop technologies that would make daily phone charging a thing of the past.

To keep a phone's battery topped up, the team has built a prototype device that recaptures wasted light from and OLED phone screen.

According to researcher Arman Ahnood, only around 36 percent of the light produced by a phone screen is projected forwards ? the rest escapes around the edges.

Here comes the science bit

The light-capturing device is made up of an array of solar cells comprising thin-film hydrogenated amorphous silicon that actually sits within the phone's screen.

It is then paired with a thin film supercapacitor to even out the voltage spikes produced by the solar cells to avoid damaging the phone's battery.

Along with extra cells around the edges of the screen, this means that the device can harness ambient light as well as the wasted screen light leaking around the edges.

A 3.7-inch smartphone screen can produce a maximum power output of 5 milliwatts in this way, which would hardly make a dent, but it's a good start.

The prototype devices are still a fair way off production, but we certainly welcome anything that lets our smartphones go even just a little bit longer between charges.

Nokia begins rolling out battery fix for Lumia 800

Nokia begins rolling out battery fix for Lumia 800

Nokia has released a software update for the Lumia 800 which will address the battery issues which have been widely reported.

The update (version 1600.2483.8106.11500 - handy) is currently being rolled out and should be with all handsets within two weeks, with half of owners receiving it in the first week and the rest in the second.

Nokia has noted the fix will include enhancements to the battery performance and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Service with a smile

It's good to see a quick response from the Finns, who promised the update for early 2012 in December. Other manufactures may wish to take note.

If you own a Lumia 800, it will automatically check for updates and send you a message once this software version is available ? delivered via Microsoft Zune (or Windows Phone 7 Connector for you Mac users out there).

Once your get that message (bet you can't wait...), plug your Lumia 800 into your computer using the USB cable and upgrade via the desktop software.
