Sony Xperia Ion launches with AT&T June 24

Sony Xperia Ion launches with AT&T June 24

Sony's next Xperia smartphone - the Xperia Ion - finally has a launch date and is set to arrive on AT&T June 24.

The Xperia Ion features a dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon S3 processor, 16GB of storage, and will support 4G LTE through AT&T.

There is a 4.6-inch screen with a 1280 x 720 resolution, which Sony has taken to calling "HD Reality."

It's also equipped with a 12-megapixel rear camera enhanced with an Exmor R sensor and a dedicated camera button on the side of the phone.

There is also a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, which is capable of recording videos in 720p.

However, it doesn't look like the Xperia Ion will launch with the latest Android OS - Ice Cream Sandwich.

When we last saw the handset at CES 2012 it was running Android 2.3.7 Gingerbread, and Sony's announcement today didn't indicate that the OS has changed in the intervening five months.

X-perience entertainment

The Sony Xperia Ion will come preloaded with additional entertainment features, as well.

Both Sony's Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited apps will be supported for access to their services.

The smartphone is also PlayStation certified for gaming, which will take advantage of the sharp 4.6-inch display.

Back during CES we went hands on with the Xperia Ion and came away impressed by its features, if not so much with its design and dated OS.

But, it could be hurt by the long wait, as it was beaten to the market by other high-end devices like the Samsung Galaxy S3.

The price is right

Sony may have come late, but they also came prepared, pricing the Xperia Ion at a smooth $99 with a two-year contract.

That may almost make up for the lack of Android 4.0 , and should turn more than a few heads at AT&T stores June 24.
