We Hate Downtime, Too! Where Has iPhone Alley Been?

It gives the team of the site a small dose of anguish to think that we put our fan-base through a month without iPhone Alley. Alas, while the lengthy downtime caused by a mixture of miscommunication and web host issues may have been a slight hamper on our relaunch festivities it takes more than a few issues behind-the-scenes to keep us from continuing our journey to re-establish the site as a key iOS blog.

Thunderbolt docks review: The best way to connect your MacBook to your other devices

Laptops are often used like desktop computers, with external devices such as displays, hard drives, and printers plugged into the ports. When you need to use your laptop as a mobile device, you have to spend time plugging and unplugging those devices?a simple task, but an annoying, time-consuming one.

Laptop docks allow you to plug all your devices into the dock itself. You then connect the laptop to the dock, usually using a cable or two. No more dealing with a bunch of cables you have to unplug, untangle, and plug back in. (These docks can also be used with Thunderbolt-enabled desktop Macs?our testing with desktop Macs went without a hitch. But desktop Macs tend to have the connectivity you need, which makes a dock unnecessary.)

I did scratch my screen. My best guess is that it was a bit of sand in my pocket. Now there's about a 3mm scratch on the screen, which is all rainbow colored whenever the screen is white. Very distracting.

I got a plastic screen cover, which actually adds more funky spots on the screen (places where there are bubbles or fingerprints under the plastic) -- but at least they help distract me from the scratch! And I'm much less nervous now about sticking the phone in my pocket.

So: don't assume that they screens really are indestructible, is all.

ICYMI: Deploying Apple devices in business and schools just got easier

For your edification (and in consideration of your valuable time) we?ve rounded up some of the most prominent stories making the rounds this Thursday morning.

Apple Makes Big Improvements In iOS Management Tools For Enterprise And Education

Despite its products? popularity in enterprise and education, Apple?s faced plenty of challenges when it comes to widespread deployment. But the company?s now made some changes to improve its lot in those areas, with improvements to its Device Enrollment Program, Volume Purchase Program, and Apple ID for Students service. Among the refinements are a ?zero touch? setup for mobile devices, the ability to lock down devices once they?ve been configured, and a way to set up student Apple IDs for kids under 13. Educational technology expert Fraser Speirs has some more insight on how that will affect education in particular.

In appeal, Apple says e-book ruling will harm consumers

Apple had no knowledge that publishers were engaged in a conspiracy in December 2009 or at any other point, the company said in its appeal against a district court ruling which found Apple and five major U.S. publishers had conspired to fix ebook prices.

The district court?s findings show that Apple offered a retail business model to the publishers that was in the company?s independent business interests ?and was attractive to the publishers, who were frustrated with Amazon,? Apple said in a filing Tuesday in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

?It was not unlawful for Apple to take advantage of retail market discord by using lawful agency agreements to enter the market and compete with Amazon,? Apple said in the filing. The discord over Amazon.com?s ebook pricing had reached the point where some publishers had by September 2009 begun delaying some ebook versions of new releases, a practice known as ?windowing.?

I had a incase rubber case on mine for a few weeks here, and it provided good drop protection, but, the problem was getting it in and out of my pockets, stretched the rubber out, and now it is unusable. it also has a problem where dust gets into it, and will scratch the bevel around the screen.

Right now, I am rocking just a screen protector ( can't even notice it is there, and I like the extra insurance it provides).

The rubber incase is really nice though, and I have a buddy that got one after I did, and his is still really nice ( not stretched out).

New iOS flaw allows malicious apps to record touch screen presses

Security researchers identified a vulnerability in iOS that allows apps to record all touch screen and button presses while running in the background on non-jailbroken devices.

Since the touch screen is the primary input interface on an iOS device, this attack is the equivalent of keylogging. An attacker could use the captured touch data?X and Y axes coordinates?to determine what characters victims inputted using the on-screen keyboard.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in iOS versions 7.0.6, 7.0.5, 7.0.4 and 6.1.x by researchers from security firm FireEye who identified the issue and reported it to Apple. The researchers also claim they found ways to bypass Apple?s app review process which could allow uploading an app with such touch screen monitoring capabilities in the App Store.

Explained: Wi-Fi Direct: what it is and why you should care

Explained: Wi-Fi Direct: what it is and why you should care

Its 2014 and the world that we all know, the one is connected by miles and miles of cabling, is all changing. The world of Wi-Fi has taken over to spread internet love without wires and is proving immensely popular - but that doesn't make it the best way to connect devices.

Wouldn't it be great if you could effortlessly connect your Wi-Fi-enabled devices without messing around with access points and lengthy passphrases? That's what Wi-Fi Direct promises.

Here we explain just what Wi-Fi Direct is and why you should be paying attention to it; it does an awful lot today that maybe you just didn't realise.

Wi-Fi Direct doesn't need a wireless access point

Wi-Fi Direct devices can connect to each other without having to go through an access point, that is to say you don't need to use your router.

This is because Wi-Fi Direct devices establish their own ad-hoc networks as and when required, letting you see which devices are available and choose which one you want to connect to.

Bluetooth

If you think that sounds very like Bluetooth, that's because it is... only a lot faster.

Wi-Fi Direct is an official standard

It comes via the Wi-Fi Alliance, the global industry association in charge of certifying Wi-Fi kit. This means that you can be sure that any Wi-Fi Direct enabled technology has been set to work with all the others without the need for special hardware.

Wi-Fi Direct is Wi-Fi without the internet bit

The idea behind Wi-Fi Direct is that simple tasks need simple connections. Lets sat you want to print from your laptop or smartphone to a wireless printer, share images with someone sat across the room, or even send your holiday video from your phone to your TV.

None of these things require an active internet connection, or an internet connection at all, but they do need to connect - to the printer, or to the other person's hardware, or to the TV. With Wi-Fi Direct, that bit's easy.

Wi-Fi Direct uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup

Much like you have password protection on your home network, you don't want any Thomas, Richard or Henry to be able to connect to your stuff. You won't want to see what the neighbours are beaming to their TV on your TV nor do you want them being able to use your printer.

In order to prevent this, Wi-Fi Direct uses Wi-Fi Protected Setup [PDF] and WPA2 to prevent unauthorised connections thus keeping your communications private.

Pairing devices can be done in multiple ways; physical buttons - "press the button on gadget X and then the same one on gadget Y", with PIN codes, QR Codes or even NFC.

Wi-Fi Direct knows what's nearby

Wi-Fi Direct includes two potentially useful things: Wi-Fi Direct Device Discovery and Service Discovery. Devices won't just know there are devices available; if developers have enabled it, your device will know what kind of devices are nearby and what's on offer.

This means that if you're trying to display an image, you'll only see devices that you can beam images to; if you want to print, you'll only see devices that are or that are connected to printers.

Crucially this can happen before you connect, so you don't waste any time trying to connect so something that doesn't do what you want it to do.

Wi-Fi Direct uses the same silicon

Manufacturers don't need to add extra radios to their kit: the idea is to have Wi-Fi Direct as part of the standard Wi-Fi radio. It's backwards compatible too, so you don't need to throw out your old Wi-Fi-enabled kit.

The Wi-Fi alliance currently claims that more than 1,100 devices have been certified since October 2010, including televisions, smartphones, printers, PCs and tablets.

Wi-Fi Direct is in DLNA, iOS, Android and BB OS and even your new Xbox

In November 2011, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) announced that it was including Wi-Fi Direct in its interoperability guidelines. Since then Google has added Wi-Fi Direct support to all versions of Android since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Galaxy S2

Samsung has included Wi-Fi Direct since Android 2.3 on the Galaxy S2, although required to only connect to other Samsung devices. DLNA streaming is now common in every modern flagship including the HTC One, LG G2 and Sony Xperia Z1.

Wi-Fi Direct is even found inside the iPhone 5S having been baked into iOS7 in the form of Air Drop. Not keen on missing out, BlackBerry has updated its OS BB10.2.1 to include Wi-Fi Direct and even screen mirroring through Miracast has Wi-Fi Direct running underneath.

Even the new Xbox One comes equipped with the Wi-Fi Direct allowing it to connect to your smartphone or tablet allowing apps like SmartGlass to work a little quicker and a lot easier.

MWC 2014: A smartphone battery that lasts a week? Unlikely, says Qualcomm

MWC 2014: A smartphone battery that lasts a week? Unlikely, says Qualcomm

We're waiting for the day when our smartphone battery will last a week on a single charge, but sadly that day will probably never come.

TechRadar spoke to Laurent Fournier, Qualcomm's Senior Director for Business Development, at MWC 2014 who revealed the technology isn't heading towards a smartphone battery that can last days, but rather one that can be charged quickly.

"It's too optimistic" to hope for a smartphone battery that lasts a week, explained Fournier. "The batteries in the old GSM phones that could effectively last an entire week are not something current technology can deliver to smartphones."

"This is because the number of applications and demands a user has of their smartphone does not allow for that kind of performance from the battery."

The classic one day

"Today's smartphone batteries are generally expected to last a day and we are investing more in speeding up the charge, rather than effectively extending the lifetime of the battery beyond the classic one day."

When it comes to actually charging your phone, Qualcomm is pushing the wireless option which already features in some handsets.

"We've announced our version 2.0 of our wireless charging technology and that's definitely the trend we're pursuing," Fournier told us.

So perhaps the nightly charging ritual is going to get easier for more of us, but you won't be waving it goodbye anytime soon.

The Macalope: A disagreement

Apparently Apple doesn?t do gigantacquisitions like other firms. This is apparently an untenable situation, because Apple needs to do exactly what everyone else does. Apple, the company with more cash and profit share than anyone else. That Apple. It needs to change its ways, pronto.

Needless to say, Business Insider?s Jay Yarow is on this problem. Phew. What a relief that is.

The URL and the page header for Yarow?s piece on this breaking news, which has been slowly breaking since 1997, take a slightly different tack than the headline. The page header reads:

Apple Needs To Be Aggressive

A friend of mine dropped her iPhone from about 3' onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered, rendering the phone unusable.

I'm certain the iPhone can withstand decent falls, but it may be a matter of luck-- if it hits at the wrong angle, it definitely can go kablooey.

On to your question:

First, how did you pay for your iPhone? Lots of credit cards offer purchase protection in case of theft, accidental destruction, etc. You may not need any more protection than you already have.

As for extended warranties/protection plans, these are almost never a good investment. If you like the peace of mind they bring, understand that you're paying for peace of mind, not protecting an investment.

Consider the SquareTrade offer you cited. If you bought a $600 iphone, you're paying $110 for 3 years of protection. With the $50 deductible you'll "save" $550 if your iphone meets the same fate as my friend's tomorrow. If your iphone dies in 18 months, you may be able to replace it for less than would have spent on SquareTrade's protection plan.

For this to make financial sense, you need to have a very high probability of destroying your iphone. How many portable electronics do you typically break in a year?

Fleksy launches public SDK, ups the ante on smart keyboards for iOS

Alternative keyboard app Fleksy is now available to all iOS app developers as a public SDK. That means developers can use Fleksy?s smart keyboard technology within their own app, replacing Apple?s native keyboard just in that space. After a private beta launch back in December 2013, Fleksy?s keyboard is currently available in 14 iOS apps, including Evomail, Happy, and a few other note-taking and text apps, but this is the first that parent company Syntellia has offered the SDK to the public.

Does this announcement sound familiar? It should, vaguely. In January, rival keyboard app SwiftKey launched a note-taking app?SwiftKey Note for iOS?in partnership with Evernote. Though these two platforms take different approaches to typing on the iPhone, their end goal seems to be the same. Introducing users to different keyboards for iOS and getting them to jump on the smart keyboard bandwagon could put some pressure on Apple to loosen its grasp.

In Depth: Samsung Galaxy Gear 2: release date, news and rumors

In Depth: Samsung Galaxy Gear 2: release date, news and rumors

The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 is likely to be a surprising addition to the MWC 2014 party, namely because it's predecessor has been on sale for such a short amount of time.

But if you read our initial Galaxy Gear review, you'd see why. A smartwatch may be cool, but if it costs too much, has too short of a battery life and is filled with useless gimmicks, it's not going to sell well ? and that's precisely what we found with Samsung's first effort.

So the rumor mill has been cranking into full force in recent weeks to talk at length about a possible sequel that will emerge with the Samsung Galaxy S5 ? read on to find out what we know will likely be coming as Samsung battens down the hatches ahead of the iWatch release later this year.

Galaxy Gear 2 design

When it comes to the new look of the Galaxy Gear, it's easy to speculate on what it might be, given the first iteration was so chunky.

We actually liked the design, as it combined industrial-looking materials with sleek lines ? but combined with the camera it was just too large. A Samsung spokesperson late last year dropped some news that the new version was in the works, and that it would be '15% to 20% thinner than the previous production', which means Samsung has realised that the current incarnation is just too chunky.

Since then, we've heard some pretty exciting things about the design. The first being that the new Galaxy Gear will be completely redesigned to get rid of the 'dull and boring' elements ? and the best of these will be a flexible screen.

This would be something that would put the Samsung smartwatch on the map, although we doubt it would be totally flexible, rather curved to make it look a lot nicer.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2: release date, news and rumors

The second things is that this might not be the only device that pops up ? Samsung's said to be pulling some of the technology out of the Gear and putting it into an advanced fitness band called, cleverly, the Galaxy Band, which would put it in direct competition with the LG LifeBand Touch.

Rumors have been put about that reckon multiple versions of the Gear will launch at MWC ? if so, the Galaxy Gear 2 and a fitness band would make sense as to the identities.

All new OS

We've heard loads about Tizen in the run up to MWC 2014, where Samsung is supposed to be showing off phones using the new operating system.

But here's an interesting one: the Galaxy Gear 2 could be running the OS as well. While such a jump in strategy would normally be tossed out as useless speculation, this could have legs as it would make the watch a lot more enticing for developers.

Word is that the Gear 2 would use an HTML5 version of Tizen, making it much easier for devs to make apps for the device and therefore increase its appeal ? given the UI is already nothing like Android, there wouldn't need to be much of a change to make things look like an evolution.

Samsung Galaxy Gear 2: release date, news and rumors

And don't worry about the apps that are already created (not that there are a lot of them) for the Gear ? as these can be ported over with relative ease.

Pricey as before?

The new Galaxy Gear needs to be cheaper than the original, coming as it did for 299 or $299 (around AU$333) off the shelf.

The good news is that the new version of the device will have chopped the cost a little as it worries about what Apple will be doing with its first wrist-adorning option.

Samsung knows that it wouldn't fare well if it pitted its watch against the premium quality of Apple's (just look at some of the high end tablets Samsung offers for the same cost as the iPad Air) and will look to offer a lower cost as well as an enhanced feature set.

With that in mind, the Galaxy Gear 2 is a crucial device for the South Korean brand ? it's already had one bite with the first option, and if the next iteration fails to ignite then it could be handing the keys to the wearable kingdom to Apple before it's even brought anything out.

Galaxy Gear release date

The Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 launch date is almost certain to be MWC 2014 alongside the Galaxy S5 ? pairing the two together will be a no-brainer for Samsung as it looks to maximize the appeal of the new phone.

But when it actually reaches shop shelves is yet to be seen, as the brand has a lot of options here. One will be to launch the Gear 2 at the same time as the Galaxy S5, which hints at it being on sale at the end of March.

This notion is certainly backed up by the fact multiple US retailers are slashing the price of the current Gear by almost 50% in an effort to eradicate stock ? which usually heralds a new device.

The other main option would be to tag the new Galaxy Gear release date for the same time as the fancier Samsung Galaxy S5 version, clad in metal and rocking a QHD screen, as many rumors are tagging that as arriving later than the first version due to issues

So here's the best case scenario: a Galaxy Gear 2 and fitness band with advanced functionality are announced at MWC 2014, and go on sale a month after launch. It will come at a more palatable price point and feature all-new design? is that wishful thinking?

Synaptics: We can do iPhone-like fingerprint sensors, but better

Synaptics executives say that they plan to build the fingerprint sensors that made Apple?s latest iPhones famous directly behind the glass of Android and Windows smartphones, removing the need for a dedicated hardware button.

In October, Synaptics acquired fingerprint ID provider Validity for $255 million, giving it an entree into the fingerprint identification market that had, for years, languished in relative obscurity. With the iPhone 5 that Apple launched in September, however, biometric sensing to unlock the phone via fingerprint suddenly became the hot new thing.

Question: Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops?

I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

First look at a 3D map created with Google's Project Tango

First look at a 3D map created with Google's Project Tango

Google just announced Project Tango yesterday and now we're getting our first looks at just what a 3D scanning smartphone can do.

TechCrunch got its hands a new video by Matterport showing a real 3D indoor map of a room captured with one of Google's prototype devices. If you've never heard of Matterport before, it's a computer vision solutions company that creates maps and 3D room reconstructions.

Matterport gave Google's Project Tango a whirl and was able to capture the color camera data with a complete 3D mesh of a room at the same time. The resulting 3D image was accurate enough to measure the height from floor to ceiling - and map all the cluttered objects in the room.

What's more, the 3D map is interactive. Users will be able to zoom in, pan and rotate the image to explore a three-dimensional digital environment.

While the 3D sensing company has built cameras of its own in the past, it said Project Tango was more than capable.

Viably accurate

Google Project Tango

Matterport was impressed with how 3D mapping on mobile devices has become a far more viable capture platform than most people following the tech expected.

The only knock Matterport CEO Bill Brown had against Project Tango was the slightly cruder 3D model it produced. But this is due in part to the 4MP sensor on the current prototype and he believes that it can easily be fixed with a higher resolution camera.

3D scanning has been a technology relegated to only robotic vision studies, self-driving cars and tech labs. The arrival of the Microsoft Kinect allowed more software tinkerers to experiment with depth sensing.

By adding 3D sensing to mobile phones, Project Tango could open up 3D scanning and depth sensing technology to even more everyday applications including gaming, helping the visually-impaired get around and maps and navigation.

  • Phone 3D motion gaming could be the future but what's its like on the Xbox One's second generation Kinect?

A friend of mine dropped her iPhone from about 3' onto the sidewalk and the glass shattered, rendering the phone unusable.

I'm certain the iPhone can withstand decent falls, but it may be a matter of luck-- if it hits at the wrong angle, it definitely can go kablooey.

On to your question:

First, how did you pay for your iPhone? Lots of credit cards offer purchase protection in case of theft, accidental destruction, etc. You may not need any more protection than you already have.

Is Huawei's smartwatch taking cues from the LG Lifeband Touch?

Is Huawei's smartwatch taking cues from the LG Lifeband Touch?

It's hardly a surprise to see Huawei getting in on the smartwatch game, but this isn't quite what we thought it would have up its sleeve.

One Huawei official has posted a picture of an interestingly-looking wrist device over on Weibo, along with the message, "My new toy. Do you like this color?"

The colour isn't the problem ? it's the design of the watch itself that will likely divide. Going by the pictures, it seems to be taking some inspiration from the LG Lifeband Touch's rigid style.

Fighting fit

However, this could be a separate health-focused wristband we're looking at, rather than a more straight-up smartwatch like the Galaxy Gear.

Huawei's smartwatch is expected to show up at MWC 2014, which kicks off in Barcelona on February 24.

Updated: Nokia X release date, news and rumors

Updated: Nokia X release date, news and rumors

Nokia X release date and OS

It started out as a pie-in-the-sky rumor: Nokia is making an Android device. Surely not, given the Finnish firm has only recently been acquired by software giant (and the Windows Phone peddling) Microsoft. So why would Nokia jump into bed with the enemy?

While many eyebrows were raised, and eyes rolled, when news of the Nokia X first took to the web (under the moniker Normandy), the sheer deluge of leaks have added more and more credibility to the handset's existence.

There are differing opinions to the name it will officially launch under though. In the red corner you have seasoned mobile leaker @evleaks claiming "Project Normandy = Nokia X", while in the blue there's a new Twitter player @NextLeaks who reckons "Nokia Asha 4xx = Nokia Normandy".

However going by the volume of leaks surrounding the "Nokia X" name that's the one we're inclined to believe.

Cut to the chase
What is it? Nokia's first smartphone to run Google's Android OS
When is it out? All eyes are on MWC 2014
What will it cost? Not a lot, around 70/$110/AU$120

Nokia X release date and price

Most Nokia X rumors are currently highlighting MWC 2014 in Barcelona as the platform for the Nokia Android smartphone to make its international appearance.

Nokia has a press conference confirmed for February 24, and all eyes will be on the Finnish firm to see if the Android Normandy handset does indeed exist.

We've even had Nokia tease us about the Nokia X's launch, as it's revealed images of tress, monkeys, UFOs, and treasure maps - with "X" references scattered throughout.

Nokia X - Teaser

It's not clear when, or even if, you'll be able to get your hands on the Nokia X, as its low-end credentials means it could be destined for emerging markets only - skipping the likes of the UK, US and Australia.

With low-end specs comes an equally low-end price, so you can expect the Nokia X to be a pretty affordable - if hard to come by - Android device, with figures of 70/$110/AU$120 being thrown around.

Here's what we reckon the Nokia X should look like:

YouTube : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtERIbk7N-E

Nokia X operating system

The signal biggest feature on the Nokia X will be its operating system. Nokia is heavily invested in the Windows Phone platform for its Lumia range, while its Asha devices run its own, in-house Asha OS.

The Nokia Normandy isn't expected to run either of these, instead opting for Google's Android operating system - albeit a hugely modified version.

We've seen numerous screen grabs appear online, claiming to show the Android setup on the Nokia X, with many drawing more comparisons with Windows Phone or the defunct MeeGo platform rather than its supposed Android base.

The first screens to appear don't give a great deal away, but the more detailed lockscreen notifications, an Android style dialer app and a Google-esque notifications bar hint that the Nokia X is packing a different, Google-flavored, OS.

Nokia Normandy - LEAK

Then came a snap claiming to show the app list on Nokia Normandy - and this has an air of MeeGo about it as well as a similar notification bar to the previous screens.

Nokia X

The most detailed screenshots to date however come via @evleaks, and show what appears to be a long, vertical, scrollable homescreen made up of various live-tile esque boxes and application icons.

Some of the apps which appear in these screens (e.g. BBM and Plants vs. Zombies 2) are not currently available on the Windows Phone store, but do exist on Google Play, once again pointing towards an Android influence for the Nokia X.

Nokia Normandy - LEAK

Nokia X screen, design and specs

Nokia X screen

Don't go expecting an expansive, 5-inch full HD display here; the Nokia X is set to keep things low key.

The Nokia Android phone is tipped to sport a middle of the road 4-inch display with a mediocre 480 x 854 resolution.

This tallies with the leaked image in the previous section, supposedly showing the dinky looking Nokia Normandy being held in a hand.

Nokia X design

As well as the leaked screenshots we've also seen pictures revealing the design of the Nokia X, and it's on course to be more of the same from the Finnish firm.

A unibody design in a range of bright colors appears to be the status quo at Nokia at the moment and the Normandy seems to be almost identical to the firm's latest range of Asha smartphones.

Nokia Normandy - LEAK

The Normandy has also been teased by Twitter leaker @Vizileaks, who posted the following snap online with the "and the waiting game begins..." - oh, you tease.

There's no way to be sure any of these snaps are legit as they are all missing vital Google/Android branding/screens.

Nokia Normandy - LEAK

One particular leak from @evleaks shows six color options (green, white, yellow, blue, red and black) as well as a single key below the screen - the same as the Nokia Asha 503.

Nokia Normandy - LEAK

If that wasn't enough in terms of colors, a picture of an orange handset claiming to be the Nokia X has also appeared online - although even the site that picked it up said "authenticity [of the images] is far from proven."

Nokia X - LEAK

We've also seen photos apparently showing the Nokia X on and working, revealing Here Maps will be included on the device, and potentially pointing towards a lack of Google's own suite of apps such as Maps and the Play Store.

Nokia X - LEAK

Nokia X specs

In terms of other specs the Android toting Nokia Normandy is tipped to sport a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon processor, Adreno 302 GPU and 512MB of RAM - hardly worth writing home about, but once again it reinforces the "budget" angle.

Round the back the Normandy will apparently feature a 5MP snapper capable of 720p HD video capture, but there doesn't appear to be any front facing option.

Word of 4GB of internal storage is also rather disappointing (especially as the operating system will take up chunk of it), but the Nokia Normandy will also rock a microSD card slot according to a spec list leak.

For any battery fans out there the Nokia X will apparently pack in a 1500mAh juice pack, which should be more than enough to keep the average screen and processor chugging along.

Ask the iTunes Guy: Cleaning LPs and album artwork wanted (and not so)

I?ve received several questions about cleaning noise on files ripped from LPs, so I discuss that in this week?s column. I also look at two issues with album art on iOS devices: one where it goes missing, and one where it goes sideways.

Cure for grungy albums

Q: I?ve digitized a number of old LPs, and, as to be expected, there is a fair amount of noise on some of them. Is there are software that will let me remove the clicks and pops in these files?

I?ve received several similar questions recently about this. When digitizing LPs?you can do this by connecting a turntable that has a USB connection to your computer or an amplifier that includes a Phono connector and audio out ports?you may find that the resulting music files have a fair amount of noise. I won?t get into the vinyl versus digital sound debate here, but those of us who grew up with vinyl don?t miss these noises when listening to digital music. Far from providing ?warmth,? I find this noise annoying.
