CES 2012: Hands on: Huawei Ascend P1 S review

CES 2012: Hands on: Huawei Ascend P1 S review

Today we got our hands on the shockingly thin Huawei Ascend P1 S. If our time with the phone was any indication, Huawei's first real high-end phone looks to be a winner.

At just 6.68mm thick, the Ascend P1 S is currently the thinnest dual-core smartphone in the world. We can't help but wonder where they put all the components.

The phone feels plenty plasticky in the hands, and several show floor phones were scuffed and dirty on their plastic backs. This could inevitably be one of the most troublesome selling points of the Huawei - how could a phone this good feel this mediocre?

Cheap plastic or not, there's no denying the Huawei Ascend P1 S looks gorgeous - and that's thanks in large part to the 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, which has a 960 x 540 pixel resolution.

What better operating system to put on that screen than Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which is also present and churns along beautifully, thanks to the P1 S's 1GB of RAM and a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4460 Cortex A9 processor.

The Huawei Ascend P1 S comes with an 8 megapixel camera with a backlight-illuminated sensor, which we were able to take several high quality photos from - despite our entirely weird lighting conditions. The Ascend P1 can also take 1080p HD videos.

Not content to rest on its already impressive specs, Huawei also ditched the common front-facing VGA in favor of a 1.3 megapixel camera.

The Ascend P1 S only comes with 4GB of onboard storage, so you'll definitely want to expand with a wonderful microSD.

Finally the Huawei comes with a 1650mAh battery, which should keep your beautiful plastic Android smartphone alive at least as long as most phones.

Huawei also unveiled its Ascend P1, which features a slightly different body style (thicker by just .3mm), but identical internal specs.

Ascend P1: The slightly thicker Huawei Ascend P1 is still incredibly thin.

The phones should be available in Europe by the end of March.

Unfortunately, neither a European price nor an American release date were confirmed, although a company representative did tell us Huawei was working closely with AT&T to try to push the phone to the US by Q4.
