Mobile wallet and NFC criticised by Pirate Bay and PayPal

Mobile wallet and NFC criticised by Pirate Bay and PayPal

Peter Sunde, the founder of Pirate Bay, and PayPal's John Lunn have revealed that they are worried about the prospect of a cashless future and feel that the mobile phone becoming a bank card, through NFC, isn't necessarily a good thing.

Speaking at the London Web Summit, Sunde ? who also founded micro-payment service Flattr ? criticised the push to a cashless society and the fact that digital transactions are traceable, unlike cash.

"There's no anonymity in transactions," he explained. "Things go digital, and anonymity is removed. You can't do anything about it. If you have a credit card there's no such thing as anonymity."

When it comes to NFC and mobile wallets, according to Wired UK, Lunn from PayPal was equally critical.

"My wallet should not be on my mobile. It should be where I want to use it, which now is in the cloud," said Lunn.

"[NFC] is a 10-year-old technology. It's fine. If it makes my life easier I'll use it, but I'm not that excited by it. There's got to be better ways. Why do I even need to take my phone out of my pocket?"

Communication game

Many phone companies are looking to NFC as the future of payments, but take-up and infrastructure in the UK has been rather slow.

One of the more interesting uses of the technology TechRadar has seen, however, was with the Sony Xperia S.

The phone comes with a number of Smart Tags which interact with the phone's NFC capabilities ? each tag changes the phone's features in a certain way.

A number of networks have also embraced the technology. Orange exclusively told TechRadar that it is planning a big increase in NFC phones in 2012 and Microsoft confirmed back in October that all of its Windows Phones going forward will have the technology inside.

One manufacturer who welcomes the technology but is a little more subdued about implementing near field communication is Samsung, which has warned that while it reckons NFC will take off, the technology will come at a premium.

Perhaps the biggest evangelist, though, is Google. Speaking to TechRadar about the tech last April, Osama Bedier VP for Platform, Mobile & New Ventures, said that NFC will bring web-like simplicity to shopping on the high street.
