Best Verizon phones 2012 - 10 we recommend

Best Verizon phones 2012 - 10 we recommend

Introduction

Verizon's service is unparalleled in the United States. With 4G LTE speeds in more cities than its competitors and a coverage maps that are redder than Red Dawn's Calumet, Colorado, it's no wonder why.

All that to say, it's an impressive network. Your phone should be similarly impressive.

But it's easy to get confused looking for Verizon's best phone. Some of Verizon's best LTE offerings have horrendous battery (like the HTC Thunderbolt) and some of its nicest looking phones don't even have LTE.

Motorola has an incredibly strong presence on Verizon's network, and if you'll have to sort through more Droids than the Sith. Samsung, on the other hand, has an extremely limited supply, and our top phone in the US - the Samsung Galaxy S2 - is nowhere in sight.

But your pleas for help have not gone unnoticed. Without further ado, we present the best phones on Verizon.

HTC Trophy

HTC Trophy

The HTC Trophy. The only trophy that was earned without competing.

The HTC Trophy isn't much to write home about. In fact, it's barely worth writing online about. It doesn't have an inspiring body, it doesn't have LTE. It only has a 5.0 megapixel camera and a humdrum 3.8" capacitive screen. This phone is so middle-of-the-road it could be mistaken for a yellow stripe.

Ultimately, the HTC Trophy makes our list in spite of all the things it's not. That's because what it IS is the only Windows phone on Verizon, and like it or not, that'll sell this thing to Windows aficionados.

Blackberry Bold 9930

BlackBerry

Some people just can't quit on RIM. For those people, the message-senders, the ones who are unequivocally unimpressed with "fully functioning OS's" and "thousands of apps," there's the Blackberry Bold 9930.

It might not look like much, but the 9930 holds it's own against, well, other BlackBerry's. It has surprisingly inspired design, which both looks and feels right. The functional QWERTY keyboard laughs in the face of virtual typing speeds, and a stainless steel chassis is reminiscent of the iPhone's beautiful industrial design.

You'll miss out on better OS's with this phone, but if you're considering a BlackBerry on Verizon, the 9930 is the obvious choice.

iPhone 4

Apple iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is by no means a budget phone, but plopping down a measly $99 will get you access to the most exclusive walled garden this side of Eden. Signing on to a two-year contract knocks a whopping $450 off the full retail price of Apple's phone.

And the good news is the iPhone 4 still has legs, and can survive at least another two years without being obsolete. Sure, you might miss out on iOS 7 when the time comes, but the recently released iOS 5 puts Apple's OS on par (or slightly above) with other OS's.

The iPhone 4 still looks gorgeous and performs admirably. For less than a pair of designer jeans you can own a brilliant camera, brand new iPod, and a ticket to the best App Store in the world.

Droid 4

Motorola Droid 4

As we said in our Droid 4 review, Motorola's Droid 4 is the best QWERTY phone on the market. It's thick without being too chunky, the buttons have a great feel, and the Droid 4 is priced aggressively.

Even our incredulous reviewer, a long time virtual keyboard aficionado, eventually came around to a physical keyboard, calling it "Nothing short of a pleasure to type on."

Plenty of awesome smart actions (a Motorola forte) and a sturdy build quality makes the Droid 4 a great phone - even if you don't require a keyboard.

HTC Rezound

HTC Rezound

So let's say you're looking for a new phone, but you're also looking for new headphones. At just $199, Verizon's HTC Rezound might just be the perfect combination.

But you don't have to need headphones to be tempted by the Rezound.

The HTC Rezound is a sleek looking device that sells packed with equally sleek Beats headphones. While the Beats headphones (which we liked in our HTC Rezound review) are the phone's major selling point, it's not the only reason someone would buy one.

The Rezound also haas a speedy dual-core processor, a gorgeous 720p HD screen, and connects to 4G LTE.

Plus, with an included 32GB onboard storage, you'll have plenty of space to fill your new phone with all the music you can find.

Droid Bionic

Droid Bionic Laptop

The Droid Bionic has been around for a while, but it's aged well, thanks in no small part to being Verizon's first LTE phone with a dual-core processor phone, and having some absolutely killer accessories.

The Droid Bionic might look like a no-frills (dare we say "boring") device from a company synonymous with sleek devices, but the Droid Bionic offers more than meets the eye. Which if fortunate, because not a lot shows up to meet those eyes.

In fact, the Droid Bionic can be plugged into a special laptop accessory and power a laptop. How's that for wow-factor?

We were also impressed with the Droid Bionic's 8MP camera and display.

The Droid Bionic has 4G LTE, but it's that dual-core processor that really helps the Bionic shine. Motorola's UI is packed with tweaks and widgets which load quickly and all felt snappy.

Motorola Razr

Razr

The Motorola Razr has it all.

A slim design (the slimmest in the world, when it was released), a beautiful screen, a sexy overlay that feels both fast and instantaneous (thanks in no small part to a fast processor and lots of RAM).

It comes in two flavors, a $199 16GB version, and a $249 32GB version - quite enough space to fill the ultra-thin device with your favorite media.

It's also LTE-compatible, and won't break the bank. So what's the catch?

Well that "slightly poor battery" becomes a "very poor battery" the second you flip the LTE switch on. If only the Razr existed with a stronger battery?

iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S

There's not much to write about the iPhone 4S that hasn't been written before. There's the incredible personal assistant Siri. There's iOS 5, quite possibly the best mobile operating system in the world. A massive graphics boost. An incredible camera that could kill off compacts entirely.

The list of incredible iPhone 4S features is not without a few gaps, however. There's still no Flash (though we're not all in agreement that Flash on Mobile is a positive), a sticky Contacts menu, and - to the chagrin of Verizon users everywhere - no LTE antenna.

Even so, if you can sacrifice LTE, the iPhone 4S will offer you goodies to barely miss it.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Google's third flagship phone comes with more features than a cineplex. Everything is packed into the Nexus, from Ice Cream Sandwich to NFC, and of course LTE.

The refreshed Gmail app puts all others to shame, the browser gets out of your way (and stays out of your way), and the gorgeous screen is both huge and bright.

The features of this phone really make it feel like the flagship phone that it is.

Unfortunately, the Nexus suffers the same battery issues of other phones on this list. The Nexus already has a 1,750mAh battery, which is bigger than the the S2's. But the large Nexus screen will eat through that battery quickly, and the second you turn on LTE you're going to watch it drain. But if you're not afraid to carry around a charger, the Galaxy Nexus will delight you.

Droid Razr Maxx

Droid Razr Maxx

We know what you're thinking. How can the chubbier Razr Maxx be the best phone on Verizon?

After all, it's not even the Motorola Razr's successor, it's just a chubbier, more expensive version of the same phone. There has to be a mistake, you're thinking, this can't be the best phone on Verizon.

But it is.

The problem with LTE devices is as quickly as they load pages online, they burn through percentages of their batteries. This little problem utterly destroys these devices usability.

Too long have we been told to "just shut LTE off when you're not using it." This embarrassing fix is not a fix. If we wanted to just shut it off, we wouldn't be so excited about LTE in the first place.

That's why the Droid Razr Maxx's battery life is well worth the fattening. It offers 7 hours of LTE usage, and seemingly a lifetime of standby.

Pair this phone with a Verizon Hotspot and you have a phone that can offer its lighting fast internet connection to your laptop, your other phones, your iPods. And still, it won't die as quickly as its skinny sister, the Razr.

Finally, we have an LTE phone we can actually use.
