As has been widely reported, today?s Pages differs from the Pages of old in significant ways?most troubling to many people is that features found in the previous version are missing in this year?s Pages (the other iWork applications have received the same criticism). And, as you?ve discovered, when you open an old Pages file in the new version and make even a single change to the document, the file format likewise changes and you seemingly can?t open that document in Pages ?09. What to do?
You can trash the new copy of Pages so that it can?t affect your old Pages documents and wait for a future version that includes the features you?re now missing. Alternatively, if you want to use the new Pages to create new documents but continue to use the old version of Pages for the documents you?ve already created, keep a copy of that old Pages application in the dock or some other handy place and drag your old files to it, rather than double-click on them.
So, are files that you?ve already opened and changed in the new Pages lost forever to Pages ?09? No. If you?ve opened a Pages ?09 document in the new version of Pages and worked on it?even saved it?you can restore the original version (one that will open in the old version) by choosing File > Revert > Browse All Versions and then browsing back to the original file. Restore that file and it will be openable in Pages ?09. This same technique works with the new Numbers and Keynote applications. Of course any changes you've made in the new version of Pages will be gone, but at least you have a copy of the document that's compatible with the version of Pages you prefer.

The newest version of iPhoto for Mac is essentially the same software you?ve been using since 2010: iPhoto 9.5, released in time for Mavericks, does not change much in terms of either the interface or the core functionality of Apple?s consumer-based image editor and photo manager. That?s disappointing, and it seems like a lost opportunity.
As noted in our First Look, iPhoto 9.5 is so similar to version 9.4.3 (on OS X 10.8.5) that I did a double-take to make sure I was running the new version. With that confirmed, it took some investigation to locate the subtle differences in the new version as compared with the pre-Mavericks edition.
First off, you have to be running Mavericks to use the new version of iPhoto for Mac, as it is not backward compatible with any previous feline-inspired operating system. So, too, you must have fairly recent Mac hardware to run the latest version. If you own a Mac older than mid-2007 or so, you won?t be able to install the new, free Mac OS with which iPhoto 9.5 is compatible.
With everything in place, you could be excused for anticipating (hoping) that a brand-new iPhoto version, accompanying a sparkling new OS of non-feline lineage, might offer something resembling a radical overhaul of the aging program. If so, you may be disappointed by what seems to be an almost identical product, containing just a few interface tweaks here and there and enhanced hooks into iCloud photo sharing.

Just over a week ago, BlackBerry finally started rolling out its BBM messaging app to iOS and Android users. The initial launch of the app was planned a few weeks earlier but was foiled by the unofficial distribution of a faulty beta software build for iOS, which gunked up the BBM works, at least according to BlackBerry.
This time around, BlackBerry wisely instituted a waiting-list system to limit the number of users who could employ the app until the company was sure it could handle the influx of new messaging activity. On Tuesday, BlackBerry announced that in just a week it had added 20 million new BBM users, which brought the total number of active BBM users to around 80 million. Those are some big numbers, and the BBM launch was an undisputed success - a success that BlackBerry needed.

There is a little trick in the filmmaking world called the Rule of Thirds that, when used, will help you shoot better footage. Go to the video settings and turn Guidelines on.
You'll see a grid of nine boxes. Now, when you're composing your shot, if you put a particular point of focus, such as a face, on any of the intersecting lines then it will improve the 'look' of your movie. As a rule, never have your main object slap-bang in the centre of the shot ? move it slightly to the side, along one of the vertical lines, for better results.
Before you start shooting your masterpiece, you have to make a choice ? to hold your device portrait or landscape ? and then stick to it. If you change your shooting style midway through your movie then it will ruin your chances of creating anything worth watching, so think carefully before you begin about what will work best for your video.
Horizontal shooting is generally best as this is how a television plays back footage ? and indeed, how we see the world. Record something vertically and you will have horrible black borders on the side of your movie when you watch it back.
When shooting footage remember to take a number of versions of the same shot, making sure that you get around 10 seconds of footage for each take.
Start with an establishing shot (this is the one that is furthest out and sets the scene). Then zoom closer in ? this is your mid shot. Then find the most interesting area that you are filming for the close-up shot. Again, use the zoom for this.
These differing shots will help when editing your footage together afterwards.
There are a number of ways to change the speed of your shooting on the GALAXY Note 3. The easiest is simply to go into Recording mode and choose Fast, Slow or Smooth motion.
Fast and Slow settings are great for comedy fast-forward takes, or stretched-out slo-mo mode. For general recording we recommend using the Smooth motion setting which will ensure your shots are buttery smooth.
The Samsung Video Editor is the first place to turn to when you're ready to edit your movie on your GALAXY Note 3.
To access this app, go to the Video section of the Note 3, choose any clip, click the left menu button of your device and then choose Edit. It will ask if you want to download the Video Editor app ? click Download.
The app allows you to add text and a smattering of visual effects, as well as giving you the ability to record and add your own voiceovers.
When editing your movie, make sure you add a transition between each separate clip. This will help your movie run more smoothly.
In the Samsung Video Editor, transitions are automatically placed between clips ? to change the effect, touch the transition and choose from the menu that appears. We reckon a dissolve looks best but you can go full Star Wars on your clip if you so wish.

The list of potential BlackBerry suitors grew by one today thanks to whispers from "people familiar with the matter."
According to sources of the Wall Street Journal, Facebook (yes, Facebook) met with execs from BlackBerry last week.
The folks from the hard-luck hardware maker reportedly jetted to California to get a read on the social network's interest in putting down an offer for the Canadian company.
That's about all there is on the matter, and it's unclear if Facebook is serious about bidding beyond taking the meeting.
At first glance a deal between the savvy Facebook and sapped-out BlackBerry sounds doubtful, but if the cards fall into place, it could make a heap of sense.
Many consider the next logical step for Facebook is to develop its own branded hardware, and having BlackBerry's patents and assets would be a massive step towards making this happen.
The HTC First was a Facebook phone of sorts, but owning BlackBerry would give Facebook the chance to go whole hog. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called developing a handset "the wrong strategy" for the company, but statuses, as it were, can change.
The Journal speculated Facebook would be most interested in BlackBerry patents covering security-network technology and smartphone components. BlackBerry is reportedly open to selling parts of its business.
Facebook could also be keen on the sizzling BlackBerry Messenger, which has raked in 20 million users on Android and iOS in one week.
The upsides are legitimate, though Facebook would have to deal with BlackBerry's limp image. The company reportedly has no debt, which is big check in the plus column.
We'll keep an ear out for further developments.

And it?s added a new avenue for easily sharing movies to your computer and Apple TV. I could go on like this for awhile, but instead of writing a whole review here, I?m going to cut to the juicy parts and focus on twenty new and improved features in iMovie for the Mac and on iOS.
iMovie has always been a bit of an odd sibling to its big brother, Final Cut, in terms of both features and appearance. It never quite had the same timeline handling, or the right look; sometimes it would be ahead of Final Cut?s development curve, sometimes far behind. This version of iMovie, however, can stand proudly alongside its big brother. It has the same ?space gray? coloration and timeline handling, and though it pales in comparison to Final Cut?s feature-set, it still has a decent number of tools in its toolbox.
But unlike previous versions of iMovie, those tools aren?t out in the open?they?re instead secreted away behind simplistic-looking buttons that won?t scare off casual filmmakers or beginners. The first thing you see upon launching the program is a collection of your event clips and a big viewing screen?you don?t even have to make a project if all you want to do is find and share a particular clip. Its initial treatment reminds me far more of iPhoto?s management options than of a piece of video-editing software. But once you open up a project, it becomes clear that those editing chops are still there.

The Google Nexus 5 may officially rear its head next Thursday, or Halloween for all your ghouls and gals.
That's the word coming from tipsters of Canadian site Mobile Syrup, which last night reported the new Nexus will arrive in the Google Play Store on October 31.
The site also noted Canadian carriers will see the phone "up to eight days later," putting a release at places like Rogers, Bell and Telus on either November 7 or November 8.
No word on US or UK carrier releases, but we have heard the October 31 release date before. Nothing is official until that (probable) Android 4.4 KitKat screen shows its face in Google Play, but it's looking more likely that will happen next week.
Google all but confirmed the Nexus 5's existence last week when it accidentally-on-purpose put the phone on display in Google Play.

I?m an easy person to spot at meetings. While everyone else is dutifully tapping away at their iPads, I?m still scribbling down notes with pen and paper like a 20th century chump. Just days before the Nexus 5 drops in, there's now word that its popular predecessor the Nexus 4 is getting a long-awaited LTE upgrade.
According to Engadget, a filing at Bluetooth SIG suggests that the Nexus 4 is now certified for LTE support.
The popular Android device has been in the wild for a year already but its LTE chip has laid latent.
The Bluetooth SIG filing suggests it may get the jump many phones already have - so for those anxious for their Nexus 4 to join the speedsters, an upgrade may be around the corner.
With LTE enabled on the Nexus 4, the phone will probably stick around in the Google Play Store next to the Nexus 5, unlike the iPhone 5 which got the boot with the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C releases.
An official Nexus 4 LTE announcement is still up in the air, but with the filing listed so recently and the Nexus 5 possibly launching on October 30 or October 31, we can bet they'll arrive on the scene around the same time.
To further assure you, the Google smartwatch and Android 4.4 KitKat are also rumored to make an appearance at the end of October.

OS X 10.9 Mavericks is out and it?s full of new features, including improved multi-monitor support. But it still doesn?t provide a quick way to change screen resolutions?you?d think that after a few generations of Retina MacBook Pro laptops, Apple would bring back a way to switch resolutions from the menu bar.
Of course, third-party developers have come to the rescue. The latest, Bright Vertex, offers EasyRes 1.0.4 (Mac App Store link), which joins Eye-Friendly, Pupil, QuickRes, and ResolutionTab in the resolution-switcher fray. Fortunately for EasyRes, it has one feature that makes it stand out from the crowd.
That feature is an immediately useful one: EasyRes provides animated previews of the available settings. Move the pointer over a screen resolution, and EasyRes shows how open windows would be affected by choosing that setting. So if you mouse over a lower resolution than the one you?re currently using?for example, if you mouse over the ?1440 x 900? setting while your screen is set at 1920-by-1200 pixels?EasyRes shows a small, animated preview of how your screen will be affected by such a resolution switch.
Even better, the animation isn?t generic?it shows what?s on your screen, so you can actually see how your on-screen items will fill the screen at the new resolution. The animation loops as long as you keep the pointer over the setting, and as you move the pointer over each possible resolution, the preview dynamically changes to reflect that resolution.

What's more important: overall pixel count, or the density of those pixels? It's a relevant question, as today Japan Display Inc. unveiled a 5.4-inch 1440 x 2560 display with a pixel density of 543 pixels per inch.
This announcement came just one day after JDI, a conflagration of Japanese tech companies, revealed what may be the world's smallest 4K screen, a 12.1-inch display with a pixel density of 365ppi.
The 4K screen has a higher resolution but lower ppi, while the opposite is true for the smaller display. Both announcements came out of Japan's FPD International 2013 expo this week.
The displays are undoubtedly impressive, but the high density smartphone-sized screen announced today probably has a better chance of actually making it onto devices any time soon.
JDI actually unveiled two displays: a 5.4-inch 1440 x 2560 TFT LCD panel with a density of 543ppi, and a 6.2-inch version with the same resolution.
JDI called the 5.4-inch version the highest-density smartphone-sized display in the world.
Like the 4K display unveiled yesterday, the two smaller screens use JDI's low temperature poly silicon technology to keep power consumption low and thus reduce size requirements.
So the new displays could potentially be used in slim smartphones with impressively small bezels.
Don't be surprised if these high-ppi displays start showing up in Sony phones at some point, since Sony is one of the partners in Japan Display Inc.

Having long expected version 5.0 of Android to be given the code name Key Lime Pie, Google instead handed the 'K' release name to Android 4.4 and in a weird cross-promotional deal it called it Android KitKat.
As part of the deal Nestle is running a contest to win a Nexus 7 or Google Play credit through specially branded Kit Kat bars.
So, apart from the fact that the chocolate bar has a space between Kit and Kat and Android 4.4 doesn't. what do we know about KitKat so far?
Android 4.3 recently arrived on the Nexus 7, Nexus 7 2012, Nexus 4, Nexus 10 and Samsung Galaxy Nexus but is yet to roll out to other devices. It'll also be arriving 'soon' on the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S4 Google versions, with HTC saying it expects to push it out to developers by the end of September.
So now we can start to look forward to the Android 4.4 KitKat release date. But when? We'll take a guess at late October or early November 2013 for now - which is when we were previously expecting to see Android 5.0 break cover.
On September 20 Nestle Germany confirmed an October launch for Android KitKat on its German KitKat Facebook wall, replying to a question with a translated message which reads: "Hi Tim, Android 4.4 KIT KAT is available in October".
A release date earlier tipped to Ausdroid which turned out to be incorrect was October 14, as was October 15 which was a date supposedly overheard at Google's October Launchpad developer event.
Writing on his Google+ page on 3 October, Artem Russakovskii of Android Police said that the Android 4.4 release date is actually October 31, a date that was set some time in early September.
"Dates do change, and my information is about a month old, so if KitKat or the Nexus are delayed, Google may not hit the October 31 date," wrote Russakovskii. "I really don't see them finishing everything early, so I wouldn't bet on anything earlier than that date."
Russakovskii added that this date fits with a rumoured October 14 TA (Technical Acceptance) date for the next Nexus, which had been earlier misinterpreted by the media as the release date.
On October 16, Google decided to play a bit of a game with us now after posting a couple of teasing statues on its official Google+ KitKat page which the world has taken to be a series of cryptic clues. Are they right? We'll let you decide.

Android 4.3 came with a few minor upgrades including better multi-user customisation, support for Bluetooth smart technology and an updated keyboard. As a minor release, Android 4.3 didn't even get its own desert-themed name, sharing the Jelly Bean moniker with Android 4.1 and 4.2.
So with a brand new code name, we can expect Android 4.4 to bring some bigger changes, but all Google is saying at this stage is: "It's our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody."
From this, we can assume that Google wants to get Android onto less powerful devices, something we were previously hearing about Android 5.0 when it was claimed that the new OS would be optimised to run on devices with as little as 512MB of RAM.
We also learned from Android Central back in February 2013 that Google is working with the Linux 3.8 kernel. One improvement that this kernel brings is lowered RAM usage, which fits with Google's goal of bringing Android to more devices.
The source who tipped Ausdroid with the October 14 release date also leaked some supposed details of the new OS, confirming that it would be available for "older phones", adding that it would also bring gallery visualization tweaks, new animation APIs, new notification widgets and the ability to change the Android default blue to other colors.
Leaked screenshots sent to 9to5Google, as well as other sites, show what might be a sneak peak at the Android 4.4 phone and messaging apps. The screenshots show a cleaner design and a lighter colour, plus a status bar that changes colour according to the colour scheme selected.
However, Android Police appears to have received the same screenshots, and having taken a close look at them, it reckons that they're actually either full-screen mockups or a custom ROM.
An image that Android Police is more positive about is one of a Korean keyboard that was posted to Google Play. In a small change, that shot shows that the status bar icons have changed from blue to gray. Those images on Google Play have since been replaced with Jelly Bean screenshots.
A screenshot unearthed by Myce suggests that Android 4.4 may indeed come with themes as the icons in the notification area for the image that the site found on the Chromium bug tracker (shown below) are blue. Myce adds: "we found references to theming in the log file but are unsure if it will really become a feature." Android Community reckons the screenshot was taken on a Nexus 4 running KitKat.
Another set of snaps claiming to show Android 4.4 running on a Nexus 4 reveal that the KitKat update could sport a re-designed settings menu complete with a print function, plus new photo editing tools in the gallery.
On October 4, Android Police's Artem Russakovskii floated the rumor that Hangouts in Android 4.4 will take care of sending and receiving text messages.
"In fact, the Messaging app is gone and is fully replaced by Hangouts, at least on the Nexus device that was being tested. It should be able to handle MMS as well," he wrote.
That rumor was upgraded to a likelihood of "9 out of 10," by Android Police on October 8, which also posted some screenshots to support the rumor. Android Police reckons that video sharing will be integrated with Hangouts as well.
Talking of Messaging, Google confirmed on its Android Developers Blog that KitKat will enable people to choose their default app for sending and receiving SMS messages. This suggests that the Messaging app may not vanish, and you'll be able to choose Messaging, Hangouts or a third-party app to handle your messages.
Android Police also reckons that location settings will be getting a refresh, with new Location Mode checkboxes enabling you to choose which methods apps on your handset can use to determine your location (GPS, Wi-Fi and mobile, Wi-Fi and mobile only, GPS only). Apparently, you'll also be able to see which apps have recently made a location request.
As the KitKat release date approaches, it seems the leaks keep on coming. On October 11, a series of screenshots of what is supposedly Android 4.4 running on a Nexus 5 turned up on Italian site Tutto Android. The shots show a less cluttered, flatter interface, with Google Now being given more prominence.
One of the shots posted on Tutto Android also shows a new option under Settings called 'Tap & Pay', suggesting that Google Wallet may be more integrated into Android 4.4.
We also learned on October 14 that Android 4.4 may bring an 'always listening' feature. A leaked build of KitKat running on a Nexus 5 apparently responded to "OK Google" and "OK Google Now" from the home screen.

In a commercial for its new operating system, Google revealed what seems to be the long-awaited Nexus 5.
Shown off in a 38 second advert, the new Nexus handset looks to be equipped with a large camera and a matte black finish, carrying an LG logo on the back.
Google has since taken the video down, leading to further speculation that it did indeed reveal the Nexus 5.
An Android 4.4 powered Nexus 5 supposedly raised its head again on 16 September where it was seen flaunting its stuff in a bar. 9to5Google posted photos and video of what might be the new Nexus, apparently left there plugged in and unsupervised by a Google employee so that an eagle-eyed bar worker was able to snap some photos and shoot a video.
In Samsung's camp, Android 4.4 will be coming to the Galaxy S4 Mini and the Samsung Galaxy Mega, if supposed internal Samsung documents obtained by Sam Mobile are genuine. If those handsets are getting the update, it's a no-brainer to assume that KitKat will also be landing on the Galaxy S4, the Galaxy Note 3, the Galaxy S4 Active, the Galaxy S4 Zoom and the recently announced Samsung Galaxy Round.
On October 14, Android 4.4 was spotted running on a new Nexus 7, according to leaked photos posted by ZDNet. Changes include round icons for apps including Google Search, Google Settings and Voice Search, while Quickoffice may become a default app now that it's free to use.
Android Police's Artem Russakovskii reckons we'll see a Google Watch - possibly called the Google Gem - announced on October 31, and that the watch will be running Android 4.4. It's been rumored for some time that Google is working on a smartwatch, and if Android 4.4 is indeed optimized for low-powered devices then it could be the perfect OS for it.
As the KitKat release draws closer, we're also hearing that it might be making its way onto televisions. Korean site ETNews reported on October 24 that Android 4.4 will improve the big screen interface, as well as improving compatibility between TVs and Android phones and tablets. This rumor ties in neatly with an earlier one that says that Google TV is to be renamed to Android TV.
