Updated: Nokia Lumia 1520 release date, news and features

Nokia's previous Lumia handsets haven't quite managed to reach the level of the big hitters in the mobile market, but with the brand spanking new Lumia 1520 may be about to change.

Of course Nokia will highlight the 41MP camera-toting Lumia 1020 and its current metal clad flagship, the Lumia 925, as competitive top-end phones - but a quick look at our 20 best mobile phones in the world, and it tells us a different story.

However, the Nokia Lumia 1520 is a beast of a Windows Phone smartphone - think Lumia 920, but beefed up in a considerable number of ways.

It will be interesting to see what kind of reception the new flagship Lumia 1520 receives, as the Lumia 925 and 1020 are still relatively fresh on everyone's radar.

Cut to the chase
What is it? The new Nokia and Windows flagship phone and the first on this platform with a quad-core processor and full HD display
When is it out? Release date TBC
What will it cost? $749 (around 465, AU$775)

Nokia Lumia 1520 release date

The Nokia Lumia 1520 was announced at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi on October 22, where it was confirmed that this flagship phone would be competing with the super-phones currently on offer from the likes of Apple, Samsung and HTC.

Given that the Lumia 1520 has been announced in October, we're expecting actual availability of the handset to be within the next few weeks, although Nokia is currently saying it will hit the US this quarter, with other regions including the UK and Europe to follow after.

Nokia Lumia 1520 price

In terms of the Nokia Lumia 1520 price, the Finnish firm has confirmed that it will cost $749 (around 465, AU$775) in the States - although global prices are still being kept under wraps.

This sees the 6-inch, quad-core Lumia 1520 fall in line with the wallet busting Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and HTC One Max.

Nokia Lumia 1520 display

The Nokia Lumia 1520 sports a monster 6-inch display, making it the biggest Windows Phone handset to date and putting it in firmly in the "phablet zone."

This supersize screen is possible as the Lumia 1520 runs the latest version of Windows Phone 8, which also allows it to boast a full HD display.

The screen is a 1080p AMOLED ClearBlack display, which means it's easily visible in broad daylight, and strong contrast with deep blacks.

That additional screen real estate means users can squeeze more live tiles onto their home screen, with the Lumia 1520 able to squash six of the smallest size of tiles into one row, compared to just four on smaller Windows Phone devices.

Nokia Lumia 1520 processor

The huge screen isn't the only exciting feature in the Lumia 1520, as it's also the first Windows Phone device to sport a quad-core processor - in its case a top of the range Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 offering.

You'll also find 2GB of RAM housed inside the Lumia 1520, and while that may not match the 3GB of RAM in the Galaxy Note 3, it will be more than enough to run Windows Phone 8.

Up until now manufacturers have had to make do with dual-core processor support on Windows Phone, while Android romped ahead with quad-core handsets left, right and centre.

But no more! Update 3 for Windows Phone 8 will provide support for the bigger chips and the Nokia Lumia 1520 is the first to take advantage.

Nokia Lumia 1520 operating system

Unsurprisingly the Nokia Lumia 1520 comes running Windows Phone 8 - but it does have the latest version, allowing it to sport such a big screen and powerful processor.

As well as bringing support for larger screens and quad-core processors - two things the Lumia 1520 is takes full advantage of - the latest update for Windows Phone 8 also brings a host of new features, bug fixes and enhancements as Microsoft looks to bring its mobile platform in line with the likes of Android and iOS.

Nokia has thrown in a few of its own apps including Storyteller, which provides fun features for pictures and can geo-locate all your snaps on a map, Here maps - Nokia's own mapping solution - and a new dedicated camera app thoughtfully named "Nokia Camera".

Nokia Lumia 1520 camera

Nokia takes its camera technology pretty seriously, but we were right to suggest we wouldn't see the 41MP PureView camera on the Lumia 1520.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 instead rocks up with a 20MP camera, which is still a massive resolution by today's smartphone camera standards and trumps with likes of the Galaxy Note 3, One Max and iPhone 5S.

It will undoubtedly have excellent low-light performance as previous Lumia handsets have had, and excellent color reproduction and sharpness thanks to the Carl Zeiss optics.

The 1520 also has 1080p video recording at 30fps plus a single LED flash.

Nokia Lumia 1520 review

There were numerous images leaks before the Nokia Lumia 1520 announcement and they were all pretty much on the money.

The Lumia 1520 doesn't exactly break any new ground in terms of design, as it follows in the aesthetical footsteps of previous Lumia handsets. It's big, brash, bold and colorful, available in white, black, yellow and red.

Measuring 152 x 81 x 8.7 mm the Lumia 1520 is going to dominate your palm and those of you with smaller hands may still struggle to hold this handset.

There's some good news though as Nokia has managed to shed some weight since the monolith Lumia 920 which tipped the scales at 185g and the Lumia 1520 comes in at a far more manageable 168g.
