Using your Dehydrator to Make Tea Flavoring

If you are a tea drinker, hot or cold, and you like flavored tea, you can make your own from fresh produce or herbs by using a dehydrator.
Do you love the taste of lemon, lime, orange or peach in your tea? Try dehydrating your own fresh fruit to have these flavors at your fingertips.
Choose fruit that is ripe and not over ripe or rotten. Wash all fruit before cutting. Cut off any blemished piece of the fruit. Slice about 1/4 inch or a little thicker. If you have a dehydrator...

Review: ScreenFlow 4 a great but quirky video capture and edit tool

Screencasts?video tutorials that focus on a captured computer screen accompanied by narration?are an increasingly popular instructional medium. They show rather than simply tell, making them a solid aid for illustrating what can be confusing concepts when confined to print.

Producing a polished screencast, however, requires more than firing up any old screen-capture utility, pressing Record, and nattering away into your MacBook?s microphone. You want a tool that captures action at acceptable-and-better frame rates, offers flexible export options, doesn?t slow you down by taking dozens of minutes to render your work, hasenough flexibility to capture not only your Mac?s screen but also an attached camera, and provides an easy way to focus on the portion of the screen you?d like to draw attention to. If that tool also includes a good set of editing and annotation tools, you?ve really got something.

And ?something,? in this best sense of the word, pretty well describes Telestream?s $99 ScreenFlow 4.

We?ve covered the basics of previous versions of the application in our ScreenFlow 2 and ScreenFlow 3 reviews, so I needn?t run through all the features introduced in the past. Rather, I?ll sum up the workflow.

Week in Tech: Saying a big hello to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

Week in Tech: Saying a big hello to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

When is a launch not a launch? When it's a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini launch. Rather than keep its powder dry until the official launch date on June 20, Samsung has decided to tell us everything well in advance. So what's the story? According to our resident phone expert Gareth Beavis, while it "packs a number of top end features in a diminutive package", it also "does away with a lot of the 'innovation' we saw in the S4". That's a good thing: the so-called innovation was generally rubbish.

Hardware-wise the Mini is pretty much what everybody expected: a 960x540, 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, a 1.7GHz dual core processor, 8GB of storage (5GB available) and a microSD slot. There's a nice camera, Android 4.2.2, a low-ish price tag and a July release date.

Samsung isn't the only firm to spill the beans way in advance of a product launch: Motorola's at it too. The Google-owned handset maker's latest flagship, the Moto X, won't be out until October - but CEO Dennis Woodside teased this week's AllThingsD conference by saying it was in his pocket but he couldn't show it to anybody. You might think that sounds like the sort of behaviour you grow out of aged six. We couldn't possibly comment.

Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

No such tactics for Huawei: its Ascend P6 will be unveiled on June 18, and if the teaser product image is anything to go by the entire internet is going to say, "Man! It looks like an iPhone!". Rather worryingly the phone's USP appears to be its thinness. While ever-thinner smartphones are impressive from an engineering point of view, we'd much rather have exciting features or better battery life than a slightly slimmer case. Hopefully the P6 has some surprises up its super-slim sleeve.

State of the 8

While Huawei gets ready to unveil a phone, Microsoft is putting the finishing touches to Windows 8.1, the operating system formerly known as Windows Blue. New screenshots suggest that as rumoured, the Start button really is coming back - and you'll be able to boot into Desktop mode, although that won't be the default option.

Say hello to the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini

We've got most of the puzzle pieces now, and while Windows 8.1 isn't going to be a dramatically different OS it should address the most common criticisms of Windows 8. As ever, we have all the Windows 8.1 information you could ever possibly need online, and we'll be updating it constantly between now and Microsoft's Build 2013 conference at the end of June when Windows 8.1 will be officially unveiled.

Cooking something up

What's American and doesn't say much for more than an hour? That's right: it's Tim Cook! The Apple CEO's second year at AllThingsD was as successful as his first, if by "successful" you mean "inscrutable". Despite the hosts' best efforts Cook refused to be drawn on Apple's plans, the existence of an Apple TV set, the iWatch, whether his name was really Tim Cook, what day it was or whether the sun was shining, and we suspect that we'd have got just as much information if the hosts had attempted to interview a spy, or perhaps a mime.

We're not surprised, of course: Apple prefers to announce Apple things at Apple events, such as WWDC, coming up in a fortnight. Hopefully WWDC will have more interesting news than a slightly cheaper iPod.

Review: GolfSense sensor and app help you fix your golf swing

I?m a geek, and I?m a golfer. As such, the $130 GolfSense Glove-Based Sensor system seems like a gadget designed just for me. The Sensor itself is a small, very light (17-gram) device that attaches to your golf glove and works with an iOS or Android app to help improve your golf game. Specifically, the Sensor stores swing data, and then communicates that data with the app for analysis. You interact with the app to study the recorded data and (in theory) figure out why your golf ball isn?t going where you want it to go.

The hardware

The Sensor attaches to your glove using two rubber straps on the back of the sensor, which slide over the velcro closure found on (most) golf gloves. The Sensor is amazingly light: Whether I was hitting balls at the range, playing a round of golf, or just swinging a club in the backyard, I didn?t even notice the device was on my hand. It?s also small enough that it doesn?t interfere with any hand motions.

The GolfSense sensor on my hand

On the other hand, while I never had any issues with the Sensor falling off during a swing, the way it attaches does make it much less convenient to remove your glove, say, when putting?remove the glove the wrong way, and the sensor falls to the ground. Also, the rubber straps feel like they may stretch over time, leading to a less secure attachment, but I had no problems during my two weeks with the device. Finally, closing the velcro on my glove was a bit trickier with the sensor in place, as there?s not much free material to grab and pull.

A USB-based charging station keeps the Sensor ready to go when you?re not using it.

The iphone is remarkably durable, considering how elegant it feels in your hand. But as others have commented, it really depends where an iphone is dropped that determines whether or not you end up with a $600 brick.

In my case, the *one* time I took my iPhone out of the Incase case I bought for it (which as bkeene correctly described, is a piece of crap, but definitely protects it against droppage), it accidentally slipped out of my hand and landed on its back glass side up. A few minutes later, I noticed my WiFi signal get gradually weaker, and in about 5 minutes, the phone was completely bricked--no wifi signal, no EDGE and the phone actually popped up an error message saying, in essence, that my phone is in fact, bricked and could no longer make calls. This from a modest fall of around 12 inches above a ceramic tiled floor.

Thankfully there was no visible damage to the unit, so I took it into my local Genius Bar, played dumb (often referring to my self-hacked WRT54 wireless router as "my wireless thingy"), and recieved a new replacement unit a few days later.

It absolutely freaks me out to think what would happen if the glass broke or something. After the first year of ownership, Applecare is worth buying for laptops and ipods, but it really sucks that they don't protect you against accidental damage, considering how much they charge you for Applecare. So I'm on the "iPhone insurance is worth it" side of the fence.

USAA, my renter's insurance provider, covers accidental loss or damage to personal property, and specifically computer gear. YMMV with your provider.

How to clear your Apple Maps search history

It?s funny how you can use an app for ages, but still learn new things about it.

Earlier this week I gave a presentation to the North Coast Mac Users Group, and during their question-and-answer session, someone asked how to clear the search history in Apple?s Maps app.

My instinct was to tap in the app?s search bar, which displays a list of your previous searches right below the search box. That?s my go-to location when I?m trying to bring up a past search. But while you can tap on past searches from there in order to revisit them, you can?t swipe on individual items to delete them and there?s no button to clear them all out. (Users of Apple Maps on the iPad are provided with a handy Clear button right within the search window?but iPhone users are not so lucky.)

Tap the Bookmark icon to access the Bookmarks, Recents, and Contacts lists.

Deodorants and Antiperspirants for Men, Women and Children

Hot weather, exercise and stress all raise body temperature, which causes people to begin sweating. Sweating effectively cools people down but excessive sweat can be quite embarrassing in social situations. People first experience armpit odor after they reach puberty and some experts believe that underarm odor increases with age. Thankfully, there are many products on the market designed to pre...

Question: Is Iphone insurance worth it?

Are there are good Iphone insurance policies or discreet cases that would protect from drops?

I decided to get an iphone after my current phone stopped working due to rain. It was a Audiovox Smt 5600 and it was a great phone and I'm surprised it worked as long as it did. It managed to survive many drops but I'm nervous the iphone might not be so resilient... So I was wondering if anyone could suggest some sort of insurance for the iphone. I found one from SquareTrade that seemed like a pretty good deal at first. It is only 10% of the purchase price to extend the warranty 3 years. However it is an additional 50 dollars for the Accidental Damage Protection and then another 50 dollars deductible if you have to use it. Do you think that would be worth it? Has anyone dealt with this company? Also, can anyone suggest a protective skin that might save it from a drop? Thanks!

All about About This Mac

In this week?s tip, I?ll discuss a cool feature that you may be wholly unaware of?even if you're a long-time Mac user.

In Lion and Mountain Lion, click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Yeah, yeah, you?ve seen this before. But now click More Info.

In the old days, you'd be taken to System Profiler, and you?d see a fairly drab list of specs about your Mac?which you can still see in Mountain Lion by choosing Show System Report from the File menu. But now More Info offers a slicker view that puts your Mac?s most important information front and center.

For example, if you need to quickly find out exactly which MacBook Air you have, the Overview screen tells you. Need your serial number? It?s here too?and you can create a text snippet of it by highlighting it and dragging it to the desktop.

Are there more HTC One variants on the way?

Are there more HTC One variants on the way?

The HTC One could soon be released in a slew of new variations, according to reports this week.

Most recently we learned of a bigger HTC One that's rumored to have a large display between five and six inches, according to pocket-lint.com.

The site was tipped off to the larger HTC One variant by the ever reliable "people familiar with the matter."

The HTC Android flagship currently comes in at 4.7 inches, so a 5-incher would be quite an upgrade.

Bigger, but not better?

The larger HTC One will feature the same specs under the hood as the existing HTC One, the site said.

But its display could be more than a full inch bigger.

There's no word on a name or a possible launch date for the new phone, and HTC isn't likely to comment until it's ready to make an official announcement.

But that's not all

Pocket Lint suggests that the new, bigger HTC One will be better able to compete with its rival, Samsung's Galaxy S4.

But the Galaxy S4 is also rumored to be coming soon in multiple variations, including a more rugged "Active" version and a "Zoom" version with a superior camera.

The HTC One, too, was rumored this week to be coming in some new editions - specifically, a "Google Edition" and an HTC One mini.

Yes, just like the Galaxy S4 mini (sort of). There's no greater form of flattery than imitation, right?

PCWorld claims that the iPhone is quite durable and probably doesn't need this kind of warranty. I bought the "Incase" (a rubber cover they sell at the Apple store) for my iphone to give it a little extra drop protection.

I had a incase rubber case on mine for a few weeks here, and it provided good drop protection, but, the problem was getting it in and out of my pockets, stretched the rubber out, and now it is unusable. it also has a problem where dust gets into it, and will scratch the bevel around the screen.

Right now, I am rocking just a screen protector ( can't even notice it is there, and I like the extra insurance it provides).

The rubber incase is really nice though, and I have a buddy that got one after I did, and his is still really nice ( not stretched out).

Opinion: Why nobody wants the HTC First

Opinion: Why nobody wants the HTC First

The Facebook phone: the device rumoured for so many years. It left people guessing left, right and centre. It was billed as potentially the biggest threat to the mobile market since the original iPhone, and with such an iconic brand powerhouse behind it the possibilities were almost endless.

So what did we get? A nondescript Android handset with a lightweight skin. Seriously guys... what?

Ok, so the HTC First isn't strictly the Facebook phone we were all waiting for. Instead it's a simple handset with an extension of the social network's application which puts it front and centre. All. The. Freaking. Time.

The handset itself isn't actually that bad: the simple clean design is easy on the eye with a decent 4.3-inch display, dual-core processor and Android Jelly Bean at its heart - plus there's a range of colours to entice even the most spotty-faced 13-year-old.

Despite that, it's not going particularly well for the HTC First. In the US the only carrier to offer the handset, AT&T, slashed its on-contract price to $0.99 and now looks set to discontinue sales, while in the UK the First may never make it into stores.

So how did this fresh foray into the mobile market go so wrong for Zuckerberg and co?

No man's land

Firstly Facebook plumped for a handset which falls into the muddy water of the mobile middle market - a congested cesspool of Android smartphones with a smattering of Windows Phone 8 devices thrown in for good measure. It's a place where even the big names struggle to carve out an advantage.

HTC First

It's essentially the no man's land of the phone industry, and if you don't have a super low price or next-gen features to set you apart from the competition, you'll find it almost impossible to stand out.

You need a pretty special USP if you're going to win in this arena and the Facebook Home overlay which adorns the First is, as we said in our review, nothing more than a glorified screensaver.

The price is not right

Now consider the price. In the States you'll have to shell out $350 (about AU$360, 230) for the HTC First SIM-free, making it more expensive than the excellent Nexus 4.

Consider who may be tempted by a Facebook phone - it will be the teenagers who frequent the network, relying on it to fuel their social lives, not the 35-year-old city banker or the parent who uses it to spy on their children and reconnect with old school friends.

HTC First

With this in mind, the HTC First needs to be priced in the pocket money region of the market - a budget phone which puts Facebook front and centre for those who actually want that much interaction.

Too much?

That said, who actually wants Facebook shoved in their face every time they look at their phone? Even the most addicted teens would get fed up with Home after a while.

I'm blissfully aware that Facebook Home can be turned off in a matter of seconds on the HTC First - but if you're going to switch it off what was the point in buying the phone in the first place?

Facebook also kind of shot itself in the foot when it announced you'll be able to download Home on a number of top handsets including the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy S4.

All exceedingly popular handsets, all of which are considerably better than the First and thus provides users with absolutely zero impetus to switch to the dedicated Facebook option.

In short, the HTC First is a handset that no one was asking for and nobody needs, pitched at the completely wrong price point, spec level and audience.

If you're an exception to this then perhaps it's time to pull back the curtains, put on some slacks, move away from the computer and actually go outside. It may shock you but there's a world outside of Facebook; you should try it sometime.

Bugs & Fixes: iTunes 11.0.3 update improves app updating

Along with the usual bug fixes and performance improvements, the recently updated iTunes 11.0.3 introduces several interface tweaks. For my money, the most welcome addition is one that Apple doesn?t even mention on its ?About iTunes 11.0.3? page: a redesigned interface for checking on and downloading updated iOS apps.

On the downside, if you?re among the unlucky minority, the new iTunes version may crash on a regular basis.

Updating apps gets a welcome makeover

Back in 2010, I detailed several problems with how the app update process worked in iTunes ? and how it could be improved. The just released iTunes update, at last, addresses almost all of these concerns.

  • The location of the Updates button has moved to a better, more easily accessible, location. Of course, you first have to discover the change. Rather than off by itself at the bottom of the Apps window, Updates is now at the end of the row of buttons at the top of the window.

  • After clicking the Updates button, iTunes 11.0.3 instantly displays a list of whatever updates you have available. In iTunes 10 and earlier, clicking Check for Updates would just tell you if updates were available. If they were, you would be asked if you wanted to view them?requiring that you click a second button. Even after clicking the second button, it still took a few moments before the update list appeared. While prior versions of iTunes 11 somewhat simplified the procedure, iTunes 11.0.3 completes the job.

  • Catching up with the iOS versions of the App Store, the latest Mac version of iTunes now gives you quick access to What?s New in each updated app. Just click on an app?s icon and an expanded view drops down. From here, you get the details of what?s new as well as the app?s version number. You can also select to individually update an app. This is still not as good as how things work on the iPad, where the data and Update buttons are all available without requiring a separate click of each app. But it?s much better overall than how this was handled in older Mac versions of iTunes. The new iTunes app update listings no longer indicates the size of each app, but most people won?t miss this.
With iTunes 11.0.3, Mac users can finally easily check what's new in each app update.
  • The Updates listings are now part of the Apps section of your iTunes Library. In prior versions of iTunes, selecting to view updates transferred you from Apps and whisked you away to the iTunes Store. I?m sure this contributed to the slower response times. It also was a source of irritation if you needed to toggle back and forth between the two locations while dealing with updates.

iTunes crashes for some

After updating to the latest version of iTunes, a subset of users report having repeated crashes, ?on an almost daily basis,? as often as ?every five minutes.? Downgrading back to 11.0.2 appears to eliminate the crashes, but Apple does not make this easy to accomplish. Unfortunately, if you are a victim of this bug, there does not seem to be a better consensus work-around. Presumably, Apple will quash the bug in the next iTunes update.

Review: iPhome 2 case and stand keeps your iPad safe and sound

It?s fairly large. It?s kind of klutzy. It?s not pretty. Yet I?ve had my iPad parked in iPhome Products?s $40 iPhome 2 for months, despite the fact that I?ve had my choice of over a dozen other, more elegant-looking, iPad stands at my disposal. Why? Because for home use, the iPhome 2 keeps my tablet safe and secure. I can set it on the table propped up while I eat, or on my lap on the couch or in bed, and it sits securely. Its design holds the iPad tightly as I transport it from room to room?instead of my usual hyper-vigilance while toting around this marvel of glass and aluminum, I can carry it around like any other normal cargo. And when I?m done using the iPad, I just flip it over and put it back in the iPhome, screen down, for extra protection?no need for a cover.

Stand-up view

The iPhome holds your bare iPad (second generation or later) in place with precision cutouts in the foam?the tablet fits perfectly into the unit?and it?s easy to switch iPad positions without straining your fingers or nails. The case leaves easy access to the iPad?s dock-connector or Lightning-connector port, Home button, Sleep/Wake button, headphone jack, and volume buttons. There are no hard pieces or sharp edges to damage your tablet, and while you can?t use the iPhome with another case, it provides a good amount of protection.

Given this description, it should come as no surprise that the iPhome is targeted at schools and classroom use. Indeed, it?s great for such use, but it?s also a capable case and stand for the home. In fact, while its shape and size might make you think it?s only for kids, it's more versatile than many of the cases and stands I've tested.

The iPhome has three basic positions: Web, Stand-up, and Tabloid. The first two hold the iPad in landscape orientation: The Web view is for typing and browsing the Web?the iPad sits at a slight angle (the rear slightly elevated) on your lap or desk. To get the Stand-up position, you set the iPhome on its shortest edge; this orientation holds your iPad up at an almost-vertical angle for easy photo or video viewing. To use the Tabloid view, you remove the iPad from the iPhome, turn the case over, and stick the tablet back in?the iPad opening on this side is oriented such that the iPad sits in portrait orientation.

I, too, have a Speck case and a screen overlay for my iPhone.

The Speck ToughCase is ugly -- UGLY!! -- but makes your device invincible. I've dropped it multiple times on concrete, have gotten it dirty, damp, and used it in extremely rugged conditions. Thanks to the case, the device remains as pristine as the day I got it.

The Speck cleans easily; just remove the phone and scrub the case under some water. When it dries, it's like new. It has yet to stretch, even after multiple cleanings. The screen overlay is also nice. If you are careful when applying it the first time, the display will look natural, if slightly matted. (Think photographs.) Another benefit of an overlay is that doesn't get smudgy or oily like the naked screen, and can be wiped clean with any towel or shirt available.

The case I really want is coming soon from OtterBox.

Incidentally, this is my second iPhone. I had no case for the first, and dropped it the week I got it. (I turn into Kramer when I make calls, apparently.) The back metal casing scratched on impact in multiple places. Thankfully, it had dead pixels anyway, and Apple replaced it.
